Hi all,

On Monday I saw the first coat of blaze blue on the van being tried. It was made dull/faded and some more pasting was done to ensure removal of any small dents. Today we went to realize that the car was completely painted in black and quite taken aback. When inquired he said it was painted in black to check for any sort of small dents which he said is visible only in black. He later said he would paint with blue again after rubbing all black off.

My question to all of you is: Have you guys come across such a technique? Do you feel whatever he has done with the explanation is valid? I will be going again tomorrow to check on the progress, let's see
Hi, got your PM, quite strange it is to paint black, i don't think anyone would waste a paint just to see any dents or scratches, i haven't come across situation like this ,you have to seek suggestion from SS80 (Anand), Okay how does black looks like? It had any shines or reflections?

In fact I am planning to go in for original MGA Omni wheel caps, you too can suggest please. BTW if you can, please post those pics
Go for MGA wheel-caps, looks good on omni, before you install it, paint all the steel wheels black, then the wheel cap's effects will be nice.

Why black on the very first place, there isnt any such techinque to check about dents and rough patches to check, and with that paint being used what about the cost of that paint and labour? would that be charged on you?
As others said anand should pour in here to say does that is required on the very first place?

The new dashboard and headlamps looks great. Since you have changed the front part under the windshield (the panel on which headlamps are mounted), i advice you to kindly check with the windshield measurments as it may cause issues later on.
Get 4 wheel rims also (may be from scrapyard), so that your car completely looks like the new model.
Also dont forget to put new style name plates (Omni and Maruti Suzuki) on the boot lid.
Please get the anti rust coating done. It saves a lot.
Please elaborate on the condition of engine, gearbox and suspension components.
Also, please post some latest pic of WIP.

I don't think this explanations seem to be valid, haven't ever came across this technique any where or heard,Dent and smoothness is felt during initial paint stage.
Experts like ss80 and varun may provide highlight on it.
Hi Patkar, Thanks for the response. Even today I had been there, he asked me not to worry, he also showed me the blaze blue paint he had brought for my car mostly the painting work will start again tomorrow.

Hi Vishwas,
I too felt the same initially but waiting to go tomorrow again to check on the status.

I am just waiting till tomorrow to get all the answers. It's been 21 days since it's given for restoration, let's see, I guess he shouldn't charge any extra labour as we have already discussed about the price.

BTW which bumpers are you using ? The metal ones or the new type plastic ones ?
Hi Varun, I have purchased the latest set of bumpers of type 3 for front and back as the earlier metal bumpers don't suit them anymore. I already have the type 2 wipers, so no change in that.

Hi Sumit, Thank you for your response. Yeah I purchased the new ones. About the windshield, I am about to purchase a new windshield too as the old one has already developed a lot of pores and scratches. So I will buy the latest one only to avoid any such issues.

Dear automobile enthusiasts, I am looking forward to the outcome. All your inputs are valuable for me as I keep discussing all these with my dad and we both discuss with the workshop guy. Hopefully I should be able to post some pics tomorrow.

Jethu, the type 3 front will give your car a more youthful appearance but that originality has been lost forever.

If you would've kept the original type 1 look your car wouldve been unique but since you have changed it, it will be lost in a sea of new omni's. [cry]

Hello Sir, I was watching this thread from long time. The omni reminds me of our school van, I learnt driving in it. I love the space in OMNI, and was willing to purchase one, but bought a Maruti 800 due to easy engine access. [:)]
Regarding this black paint issue, YES its true that matt black paint is used find small dents and scratches or any small bulge in sheet metal or putty.
I had seen this process on a Show on Discovery Turbo where in the AUDI factory this method is used. But they have special testing chamber lit with specific lumen tube light at different angles and an UV light in their hand. The paint they use is anti corrosive and is later covered by 6-7 coats of the actual color of the car.

As your vans color is dark blue, the painters may have experimented this.(but without the chamber)
Do not pay extra for the black paint.

Took leave on Saturday to go to the workshop so that I could see the base and the final coat of painting, but fell ill. Down with fever. :(

I could visit the workshop today to find some decent developments, posting the pics below, please have a look at them; you may find slight difference in shade which is because of a lot of vehicles parked, different colors in the surrounding atmosphere which kind of gives an impression of a shade change in photos but it looks even when observed directly;

The doors are not fixed with the rubber beading, hence don't look aligned, these should happen in a couple of days.

It's been close to a month now and he says it might take a week more to complete the work which might go up-to 2 weeks as well, By the way got the break lamp to be fitted inside the rear glass and got the type 3 steering wheel as well.
