Anytime in the first week of October? Let me check and get back to you. I should be able to skip one day of class then and bring my Getz. I'll get the Polo done later because the interiors of my Getz are unbearable at the moment. The same people who last year asked me whether my car was brand new will ask me whether my car is twenty years old now. That is how dirty the insides are.

No problem. We are talking about detailing at 3M cochin right? not Pete's detailing na?

Yup. I'm talking about 3M detailing. For Smartwax, going all the way to Cochin just for that would be a waste when we can get it done in TVM itself. \m/

Offtopic - I saw you today morning near the Infosys campus at 0630 hrs. You were coming in the opposite direction. I was on my way from Kollam. I was overtaking another car and you flashed your headlights at me a couple of times, probably thinking that I was going to obstruct you [:D]

I could see that you were in a hurry [;)] And I'm not in Trivandrum at the moment. I'm in college. At Karakonam. I will let you know when I come to the city and then we can catch up if possible [:D]

Princess visits Velankanni

We made a one-day trip to Velankanni. Trust me, a one-day trip can drain the life out of you if you have no back-up driver.
We took along our driver with us and I must say it was the best decision we made.
We left at 0445 hrs. The driver took up the first shift as I was sleepy and I'm not a fan of driving in the dark. This was also the first time I spent so much time in the back seat of the Polo. The leg space is at a premium but the underthigh support and back support was pretty decent. Nothing to complain about.
The roads from Trivandrum (Kaliakavila) to Nagercoil are in bad condition with huge potholes in some areas. It took us around 2 or 3 hrs (don't remember the exact duration) to reach Nagercoil. From there, we went to Tirunelveli and then hit the express highway to reach Tuticorin (I don't think we touched Tuticorin city). Had breakfast at Tuticorin. After that, from Tuticorin, it was the ECR to Velankanni.
The express highway was awesome. Smooth roads. Nothing like what we have down south Kerala. We averaged 120 kmph, at times touching 140 kmph. The car was stable at those speeds but I bet the Punto would have felt more stable.
On the ECR, I touched 160 at some places but she felt she could go more though I didn't want to because there are some scary uneven patches on the ECR along with the countless goats and cows. The Polo even did well under hard braking, due to some random goats deciding to meet it's mate on the other side of the road when we were barreling down the highway.
We reached Velankanni at 1300 hrs and had lunch from a hotel there. Then visited the church and paid our respects. Left Velankanni at 1500 hrs and followed the same route back to Trivandrum. The night driving was done by the driver. Reached home at 0015 hrs.

Total distance covered - 1030kms
Total travel time - 17 hrs
Avg. FE - 16.8 (because we were ripping her at 120-140 and at times touched 160 with me behind the wheels)

What I learnt from the trip:

1. The Polo can comfortably cruise at 120 kmph all day long.
2. When nearing bridges, reduce the speeds to 60-70kmph or the bumps can catch you off guard.
3. Driving more than one thousand kilometers in one day is possible, expecially if there are two people taking shifts. BUT, do that only if you have no option.
4. The goats and cows are dime-a-dozen on the streets of rural TN and they aren't the least bit afraid of cars.

Wow! Thousand plus kilometers in a day.[clap] So basically you stayed for 2 hours at your destination and rest of the time was spent travelling. I myself, love the travelling bits even more than reaching the particular destination and what you did is like the epitome for that. [:)] Kudos!

Regarding, the Polo, yes it can easily cruise at 120-130kmph out on the highways all day long. Fuel efficiency surely takes a dip at those speeds, but still not that bad. I am desperate to take my car out on the highway as its been months since it even crossed the city boundary. Hope that happens soon. How about uploading a few pics of your trip.

Hey GM88.

Yes. 1025 kms in less than 24 hrs. I thought it would be Mission Impossible but I was proven wrong. I wouldn't recommend it though. For such a long distance, a two-day trip would be ideal. We had to do it in one day as I could afford to skip only one day of class. That was the only reason.
Regarding pictures, let me see. I need to fish them out of my camera. I will upload them after I get access to a computer that runs on Windows.
And yes, at those speeds, FE does take a beating but it was still pretty decent considering the high speeds and overtakes and random animals and what not.

Love your mini travelogue. Keep em coming.
It was a totally unplanned travelogue. I thought I'd make it more interesting but I couldn't remember the names of some of the towns we passed through and also, the time we reached various places. I am only sure of the time we left home, the time we reached Velankanni, the time we left Velankanni and the time we reached back home. Another thing was that majority of the time, we were travelling through almost deserted areas and salt pans. Next time, I will try to make it more interesting to read.

20,000 kms in 10 months and 6 days

Princess achieved her second milestone on the 21st of September, 2013. She crossed the 20,000 km mark ten months and 6 days after she was bought.

How has the ownership been all this while?

Brilliant is all I can say. The car has never let us down after the initial teething troubles. The go anywhere attitude is commendable. 1000+ kilometers in one day and she, as well as us, didn't show any signs of fatigue. She has been kept covered in muck and dirt for weeks but one wash was enough to get back the shine on her skin.
And also, I've been driving a lot, lot more compared to when it was only the Getz. My bike and the Getz have till now done only 35k kms and 37k kms since 2006 and 2008, respectively. As of now, I do almost 2000 kms a month since I got the VW.

Do we have any regrets buying the VW Polo?

No. The engine does at times have me wishing for more power but come on, it's a puny 1.2l engine. What more can I expect? Or can I? [evil]

I have been in touch with both T-O-T and Code6 and both of them are still testing remaps for the 1.2 TDI from the VAG group. If only it came out sooner.

Would I recommend her to anyone?

It depends on what the priorities of the person are. If he/she wants a good looking car that is fun to drive with good, European heritage at a set price point, I would recommend the Polo. If he/she can afford the GT TDI, I'd say go for it with your eyes closed.
But if you want a really, really fun to drive car or a car that is very spacious at the back or that is cheap to maintain, I'd ask them to look elsewhere.

Kitna deti hai?

The average FE has been 15.65 km/l with the best FE being 17.3 km/l and worst being 14.51 km/l. This data was calculated using the tank full to tank full method and kept track of using Fuelio (the app I use on my android phone). The FE will seem low compared to the FEs given by the Multijet engined cars but this was almost 90pc in the city in heavy traffic and the rest on the highway (like many of you know, Kerala highway traffic is like city traffic in other states, especially during the weekends).

To sum it up, I have had (and will have) an extremely satisfied 20,000 kms with her and I wish to do many many many more kilometers in her before I can think of a change.

Regards,
Vipin

Got the leather wrapping for the steering wheel done at Car Parlour, Nanthencode, Trivandrum. The job is satisfactory, not great. The reason is partly because of me as I was adamant about wanting the spokes covered too. They said they were not too keen on covering the spokes as the horn pad doesn't have the extra space underneath it unlike in a Swift where there is loads of space underneath to cover the spokes as well as to make the horn pad work effortlessly. I asked them to try and they did. The result is the horn cannot be honked using only my fingers anymore. I need to exert a decent amount of pressure because the leather prevents the horn pad from moving much. The good thing is that the pressure needed has reduced slightly because I kept pressing the pad repeatedly to try and flatten the leather a bit. But I still cannot honk only with my fingers and I need to press at the centre to honk (like in the Polo Highline and Jetta and Passat). The corners cannot be used to honk anymore.
The other part of it not being unsatisfactory is basically because the leather has been stuck a bit irregularly at some parts. I noticed it only the next day as it was dark by the time the job was done and I was in a tearing hurry to get home.

Damage to the pocket - Rs. 1200

I'll put up pictures of the job done this weekend after I take some photos.

Some more stuff

Princess is at the 21400 kms mark and soldiering on. No niggles bar the one that I had at the beginning.

I bought some more stuff for Princess. Minor stuff, if I may add.

1. A steering lock from eBay for Rs. 399.
  • Make - Type R (I've never heard of the brand)
  • Build quality - 7/10 (The one I have in my Getz which I bought from Muscat is 10/10).
  • My views - There was a slight defect in the product when I recieved it but it doesn't stop it from being useful.

2. Car charger from eBay for Rs. 180
  • Make - Belkin (fake, not original)
  • Build quality - 9/10
  • My views - The car charger charges my phone faster than the old charger I had which I bought for Rs. 150 from a shop in Cochin. It also sits somewhat flush with the cigarette lighter power point which is the reason why I bought this instead of something similar to what I had earlier.

I've attached a couple of pictures of the leather wrapped steering, steering lock and car charger. Also a picture of when both my Getz and Polo where at the parking lot in my girl's flat. Pardon the poor quality of the pictures as two of the pictures were shot under low light and the others under extremely bright light. [glasses]
Also attached below are a couple of alloy wheel designs that have caught my fancy. My girl and my sister particularly like the dull brown colored alloy. We though, have a thing for gun metal colored alloys (I think the alloys on the Toyota Etios TRD Sportivo models are to die for) and if I can find gun metal colored ones, I'd get them at the drop of a hat. Another plan I have is buy one of the black ones (like the second last alloy in the pictures below) and get them repainter in gun metal color but I don't know if there are competent painters here.

Vipin

The last Alloys from HRS would look best for your White Polo.[:)]

If you want to repaint them A shop in Kochi does it perfectly - Dmh Tire and car mods. I am planning to go their for painting my alloys too.

I know. I like that one too but the others are against them (and unfortunately, I have to take their opinions into consideration too [frustration]). I saw a couple of white cars with golden colored alloys and while they look good, they don't stand out much. I also like the second one (the all black one next to the dull brown one in my previous post). I thought of getting that and then repainting it in gun metal color when I get bored of it.

Vipin

PS. Know any HRS dealers in Kerala? These guys (Sai mag) said they'd ship the alloys to my house at Rs. 5300/alloy.

Great updates VipinLJ. Congrats on completing the 20k mark in just over 10 months. That is some decent amount of miles you've been crunching in your Polo. Mine has just done 15k in close to 18 months of owning the car and there are still no signs of the running to increase in the future anytime.

Mileage I've been getting is slightly better as compared. Close to 17kmpl in city and around 19kmpl on the highways.

Are those reflectors you've got fitted in the rear bumper?

For the alloy wheels, I really liked the second one. Will look really good on your white Polo. Do let us know which one you finalize.
