re: Tata Safari 3.0 Dicor: Burnt, Recovered and Reclaiming @1,55,000 Kms

You mentioned in one of the earlier posts that the Safari was fitted with Michelin Latitudes. How was the performance on the French rubber? Which brand of tire do you find the best for the Safari out of the ones you have been through?
I have used Nexen A/T, Michelin A/T, MRF Wanderers A/T, Apollo Hawkz A/T, Michelin Latitude, Bridgestone HT.

Out of all those the most comfy tyres were Michelin AT, when I putted them on my Safari they soaked the bumps better and made the overall ride quality closer to a air suspension Volvo bus. The tyres lasted well for 60K kms. This tyre performed well and had very few punctures on any of the tyres.

Nexen A/T were hard compound but very reliable tyres, this were the second most comfortable tyres I had.
These tyres had ZERO punctures in 40K kms that I drove on them, excellent for Indian roads.

Not much to tell right now about Apollo and Wanderers.

Michelin latitude are the worst of them all. I regret havein them on my SUV. Each tyre had close to 20 punctures (tubeless) and the tyres used to give-up on turns like none of the tyres I had before. Very soft tyres, sticks nails and even stones like a magnet.

Bridgestone were okay, but I would not buy them for no reason.

@Abhishek: Surprising! The most expensive SUV tire getting the most brickbats. However, I do know few people who sing praises of Latitude. Or maybe they probably have been driving on butter smooth highways only.

Mastersquall is bang on. The Geolandars are good too. Try them out once you get that 4x4.

By the way, does your Safari's dash still has that carputer hole?

Yeah, Yokos and Conti's are the hardest rubber currently available in India. Beats everything when it comes to offroad performance. How's the tyre noise?

Yeah, but that does'nt look ugly, infact one can hardly notice it. I am thinking of putting a ring in the hole to give it a proper round shape. But that involves a bit of work and I am lazy at work. :P BTW, do you know how to pair a cell phone with a PC to play songs and receive calls? I have the Bluetooth adapter and mic installed already but am stuck on playing songs through bluetooth from cellphone to carputer.

Did a 500 Kms round trip today. The front left wheel bearing is making loud sound, continued throughout the journey but no problems I drove at 80-100 Kmph. Will be replacing all the four bearings of front wheels. Changed the bearings last time at 75K Kms AFAIR.

60000 km is a good life for the wheel bearing of a 2.5 tonne behemoth. How much does it cost? I hope you had got the front bearings greased on schedule.

Pairing your cell with the carputer should be easy since you already have a bluetooth adapter. Its just like pairing two bluetooth equipped cell phones. What's the problem you are facing?

Oh man! Yes the brake pads are gone too. I hoe that it is not a brake noise, otherwise I might also have to change the disks.

I did periodic greasing and changing of wheel bearings around 75K kms. The front 4 wheel bearings costs 1000 Rs plus 300 Rs labour plus 150 Rs for grease.

I can't stream music from my cell phone to PC using bluetooth, any idea how to do that?

@Abhishek: Why not discuss this on the Carputer thread?

Also, could you please mention the contact details of your 'outside' mechanic and/or the guy from whom you got the suspension work done?

EDIT: The AC of the car is down again thanks to the leaking AC gas.[frustration]

Yes, I would this guy works in Krishu Motors Craft. Those Krishu guys are very strict/harsh on their mechanics for not working outside for obvious reasons, once he was fired for the same reason, but this guy is so good with his work with Tata cars that the Krishu guys had to plead him to get back to work. I will PM you his number.

Got the wheel bearings replaced (front) costed 980 Rs. Also got the front brake pads replaced costed 1180 Rs. Total cost came to 3K including general service (no oil change, only air filter cleaning and suspension nut-bolts tightening). Got to know a new thing that the left tie-rod is worn-out in just 10K after suspension overhaul.[frustration] Next in line is AC gas refilling.

How can a new tie rod wear out in just 10000km[surprise]? And you said you just don't like to push the vehicle ha ha!

Law of nature I guess, an 80 year old man cannot sprint like a teenager even if you feed the former with a diet of almonds and testosterone; something, somewhere, will always be suspect (will all due respect to your scalded giant, of course[clap]).

Details of the 'outside' mechanic please. And what about your plans to sell it?

I have not driven even 1K kms in the last 10K kms. It was driven by my brother, but that too on good roads. The tie-rod might have some manufacturing defect. Nowadays, the only time I get the vehicle to drive is when something is faulty.[roll]

As soon as I find a buyer for 2.7-3L I will sell the vehicle. Right now the only works required are the ORVM, Clutch overhaul (the clutch is hard, but there are no signs of clutch wear and tear, its pressure plate which needs change) and front left fender. One by one will finish them.

Pm'ed the number.
