re: Tata Safari 3.0 Dicor: Burnt, Recovered and Reclaiming @1,55,000 Kms

Thanks. What all works is this mechanic good at on the Safari? Only the steering/brake /suspension or does he take care of engine and electricals too?

I know someone in your city who would be able to supply two new (left and right) 2.2 Dicor ORVMs for Rs. 2500 (Made in Thailand). PM me for details.

It'd be hard to find an enthusiast in 'bhiyao' city who shall be prepared to shell out something between Rs. 2.7-3 lakhs for a 2006 model Safari with more than 1.35 lakh km on the odo, but all the best nevertheless[thumbsup].

Got the AC problem solved. The condenser fan fuse was burnt due to loose connection. Got the fuse replaced and voila, its Kashmir in the scorching heat in no time.[clap] Also got the tie-rod for 600 Rs, will be getting it replaced after the 1000 kms journey starting tomorrow.

Abhishek, still hanging on? I thought you'd sell it before 2013 ends - resale value and all.

Have you ever faced something like the engine cranks but does not start? I drove a 3.0 a few days back and after a long drive, it refused to start. On switching on the ignition, the glow plug and the water in fuel sedimenter indicator did not glow, while the remaining indicators did come on. The engine cranked but refused to start. We managed to push start it but it again showed the same behaviour at the next stop. Finally, after cranking it multiple number of times, the glow plug and the sedimenter indicators finally lit on ignition on and the Elephant fired flawlessly as if nothing ever happened.

Case of loose sensor(s) perhaps. Whats your take on it? The battery is new and there was no air in the fuel system.

No options left, If I did sell the vehicle right now, as per the market trends I would get no more than 2.25L at max. And if I keep the vehicle for another year or two the market value might be around 1.90L. Not much reduction considering the mileage my vehicle does.

There is no glow plug in 3.0L so its light will not glow. Did the check engine light came on? If not it might be a loose fuse or sedimentor sensor connection. Check for water in sedimentor. Nope, I have never faced the engine refusing to start issue.

No water in sedimenter. No loose fuse. No check engine light. The glow plug light comes on everytime the ignition is switched 'on', glow plug or no glow plug. It was only during the time the 3.0 failed to start that the glow plug light refused to come on. I just now called up my friend who owns that Safari and he confirmed that the vehicle is starting on first crank everytime thereafter and the glow plug light and the sedimenter light comes on without fail when the ignition is switched on; and go off in a few seconds thereafter.
Safari electricals AARRGGGHHHHHHH[frustration].

There is no such thing as glow plug light in Safari 3.0 PERIOD! The glow plug indicator is marked on the meter but it never light's-up. Something is not right!

Ha ha. Exactly. Let me see whats wrong and shall update. But I don't think the Safari wont fire up if there is water in the sedimenter - it will fire up and run in limp mode. I suspect a loose sensor/connector somewhere; perhaps the cam /crank sensor.

Shall update.

Where do you get the wheel alignment done? At Krishu motors itself? How much do they charge for it and how much for a shim job?

I generally get the alignment done at Michelin Tyre, Bhanwar Kua. Those guys are good at their job. It's only for SHIM job that I got the alignment done at Krishu Motors Kraft. They charge 490 Rs, I remembered that in 2009 that was around 250 INR. Nothing extra for SHIM job.

Yes. Miclehlin Tyre Plus shops are good. I think they all use John Bean equipment instead of the neanderthal thread method used by most roadside alignment shops.

How often do you (have to:biggrin:) get the alignment/balancing done? 490 bucks include the shim job? How long do they take for an alignment job which entails adding/removing shims?

I get it done at every service/10,000 kms. Yes, the alignment charges include the shim adjustment and it takes min. 1 Hour. Safari is very sensitive when it comes to getting right alignment, my Safari almost at every service needed shim adjustment, I don't know why maybe due to suspension wear and tear.
