re: Tata Safari 3.0 Dicor: Burnt, Recovered and Reclaiming @1,55,000 Kms
Running costs are fairly low if you follow regular services and don't drive like a MANIAC. No starting problem as of now, for that matter I have zero problems apart from the Tata's genetic RATTLING niggle.
The 4x4 Safari deal looks good but the last time I inquired about the price of a 2007 Safari it was 3.5L for fully loaded 4x2 model and that was a year back. So, I think you can bring this vehicle for anywhere between 2.75-3 lakhs, I am saying this as you inspected the vehicle and found the kms genuine. Check the 4x45 in 4H and 4L, a simple test that the vehicle is engaged in 4L would be the RPM would be higher and the car speed would be lesser when compared to 4x2 mode. In other words, greater RPM at the same speed in 4L when comparing with 4x2 mode. You might have to reverse abit to lock the hubs for going into 4x4 mode. Also, open the engine bay and check for any oil leakages around the tappet cover area, check the AC in both the modes, also check the middle row blower. Check for improper wear of tyres from inside and outside, might indicate some bushing problem with the vehicle. Check if the height of the vehicle from front is not too low, if it is lower than the normal Safari (check other Safari's for that) then the vehicle might probably be due for suspension. (although lower height is not a indication of suspension work, but the TASC lowers the vehicle height to compensate for the bad alignment due to wear and tear in suspension parts.) Add 17K for suspension work if it is bad.
Also, check the clutch for any hardness, if it is hard then you might have to shell out 10K for clutch work.
Ask him about the 1st service if due than add 10K more to get the vehicle into your liking condition.
Ask him when did he changed the battery last time, if more than 2.5 years than add another 4.5K for the battery.
Check for the AC functioning if gas needs tobe refilled then add another 1.5K for AC gas refilling.
Ask him if he got the front bearing greased, if not add another 2.5K for replacement plus greasing.
Check brakes, if found spongy then add 1.5K for front brake pads and 3.5K for read drum sets.
For engine, check that the engine does'nt makes crankshaft noise which 407 series engine is famous for (it is a type of clattering noise), check there is no excessive nmoke if revved constantly at a particular RPM.
I hope you have got enough points. Are you seriously considering buying a Safari?
Your opinion please? I think anything around Rs.3 lakhs should be a good deal.
