So this is your problem.
You must drive new generation diesel engines to have some good sound effect.
Name the car, because every diesel car has a drone under the hood which becomes more and more audible as the rpms increase.
Weather it's a Beat or it's an A8,no diesel car is free from this diesel clatter. While even a Honda City is also very silent.

So you mean any day anywhere its petrol only, who is the winner?
Yeah,I mean that only..

Then try to accelerate your ride(petrol) without pressing pedal on any incline, Try to do the same with a diesel car. You'll know first reason why we love diesel.
This is also not applicable to every diesel also if diesels have a good lower end then petrols have a very much fun filled top end.
Have you ever driven your petrol car uphill in second or third gear, the car becomes a beast at 4000 rpm and above and the fun it offers can never be offered by a nose heavy diesel which has a very narrow powerband.

In city you'll need min. gear changes in case of the diesel.
It depends on the gearbox.BTW,what about the turbo lag in case you need sudden sudden power. That time diesels are left behind waiting for driver t shift to first.

On highway, still you'll find diesels much better derivable then petrols.
Hehe, you need to drive a Honda i-vtec buddy or a Skoda TSi or a Hyundai GDI..

AND GUYS YOU CAN EXPECT FROM A DIESEL TO BEHAVE LIKE A PETROL BUT VICE-VERSA IS NOT POSSIBLE
I don't expect it.
  • Can a diesel have good top end as of petrols?
  • Can a diesel work without shouting?
  • Can a diesel have 4000-5000 rpm long powerband?

If somebody says diesal engine is noisy I am sure he has not waken up from the age of balck and white television..lol and ask him to see a BMW diesal mill.
You need to see a Honda petrol mill. And if you ever saw a BMW petrol mill then I am sure you will throw away that oil burner.

Of course diesal fuel has more power to unleash which is skewed to make engine more fuel efficient.
Oh,you are ignoring petrol engines than.
Look at Mitsubishi 2.0 Mivec which powers EVO-X.
Look at the 2.4 V8 which powers formula one cars. This engine revs till 18000 rpm(And is full of power for about 14000 rpms)..CAN A DIESEL ENGINE REV TILL EVEN 8000??

i don't believe but i hear sound of noisy engine from diesel car except expensive cars all hatch i have seen which are 2 or 3+ producing sound like truck .
If there is even slight carelessness in maintaining the diesel car is done then the tractor inside shows itself in no time.

I think one of my friend on TAI said, all you need to do is shift a gear down and then there is nothing like turbo lag. and thats what I consistently do. [:D]

I know , and you also who that person is. [glasses]

Well..it looks like someone shot me with my own bullet..[lol]

My purpose was to mention the shortcomings a diesel engine has.Now I have a habit of driving with one hand on wheel and one on gear lever and hence I can shift hundred gears but what about people who are doing so on a curvy road and are unable to turn wheel perfectly using one hand??
Rest...accept my bow to your wits..[clap]

Man I also drive with one my hand on steering wheel and other on gear knob. And it also a fact that both engines have pros and cons.

And we both know it is never ending debate here. [lol]

I f one can do small mathematical analysis on torque and rpm, he would not try being smart to compare a 18k rpm with 8k rpm .now pls dont come up with excuses saying never heard anything called maths!
flashpoits, energy, safety, eco friendliness and everything else diesal provide more per litre advantage than petrol.

Regarding the fun part it is subjective.
I found no fun ever in straining engine at insane rpms. After all its metal and they yeild quicker when stressed:(i know masochist who like to see their engine screaming)
At 18k rpm an engine would last how many kms ? Anybody? Whats the funpart? Its made just made for the sake of it.

I have loved instant torqu on tap. A petrol engine has to be revved very hard to get funfilled torque which diesal give in a few rpms And that makes a diesal a joy!

Actually this type of driving only makes the diesels a turn off for me.Because in diesels we have a small powerband which is never bigger than 1000-1500 rpm and hence to keep the car running like a rocket I need to shift a bit too much, while in petrol cars with a powerband of about 2500-3500 rpms,it really requires less gearshifts.WELL,IT DEPENDS ON THE DRIVING STYLE THOUGH.

And we both know it is never ending debate here.
Then why to end it?Just carry on and enjoy my tractor driver!![;)]

@Jayadev:
I haven't heard anything called maths!!What's that?

BTW,what is the point of safety in the diesel engines?I mean you mentioned the word safety too!!
About 18k I don't know bu the engines of superbikes last for lacs of kilometers while they can rev till 12-13-14k easily.

Instant torque!!Buddy, you need to drive any twin turbo petrol or even a Skoda TSi,after 2000 power builds up..at 2500 it starts pushing you back and at 3000 it's like a beast and then you have 3000 more fun filled revs not like 1500 revs that diesel engines offer!!And yes,if you shift up from first gear at 4000 rpm and from second at 5500 rpm and from 3rd at 6000 rpm then you touch 160 in third gear and 4th,5th and 6th are still left!!
Now if you even keep on driving at 160(in 6th gear) then also the car has loads of torque and power in reserve and turbo keeps running for whole time.

while in petrol cars with a powerband of about 2500-3500 rpms
That also means that diesel does its job in lesser rpm's & still deliver more power & torque than petrol.
& anyday diesel requires lesser gear shifts than petrol. [;)]

That means the diesels have very small powerband to play with.
I mean start the car, first push it till 2000 rpm and then play for next 1500 in first gear and then again your dear engine starts loosing its guts.
Now such a small powerband..YUCK!!

BTW,I am sure that if running costs doesn't matter then 90% of the people will shift to cars again.

Once I read somewhere that a little 19 year old kid has driving experience of lacs and lacs of kilometers and he also talked about Economics, Finance and Automobile Engineering.

Now I am reading this what is quoted above.

My diesel car starts moving at 800 rpm, shift to 2nd gear within a couple of seconds and to third without touching accelerator pedal. After shifting to 4th gear, it shows 1400 rpm.
Now somebody will shout sedate driving. But this is more than adequate for our Cities. Has to apply brakes even with this style of driving, when ever there is a petrol car infront of us.

@dharmesh,
Now tell me one thing which car requires lesser gearshifts on the go ,diesal or petrol?
Just from your own experience !
This question is very difficult for me to answer, because last time I drove a petrol car for more than 2-3 KMs is ago 10 months. And till now I am whole heartily Diesel guy. [clap]. Sorry but next time I take FIL's car for ride. Ill keep an close eye on how much time I shift the gears and compare it with my ride back in Mumbai. And the details would be posted here ASAP. [:D]

it seems that 19 year old kid was reading too much cocks and bulls in internet.

@auto, let me know when did you stalled your diesal car in 500 to 1000 rpm,if you ever could .
