I have both, Petrol suv ,dodge 3.6litre V6 engine and diesal suv ford 2.8Turbo .
Hmm,I have owned a lot of diesels till date and no doubt some petrols too but no diesel ever impressed me as much as the petrol ones do.

Trust me diesal anyday for me.
What's there to trust?You like diesel and I like petrol.That's it.
BTW,it looks like this thread has no more cream left,I have kept all my points and you people have kept all yours.

Where diesels are crude as compared to petrols and offer good driveability in the real world,petrols are high speed running engines which offer refined and high rpm power...

Cream? I thought we are talking about our day to day life preference not what happens over game console or race tracks.If I had to wear race suit I will ask for a Petrol or high octane engine but I wont buy one for my home use and leave whole compound stinking petrol.

because you compare a Laura TSI to corolla altis D-4-D [facepalm]

some relate the crudeness to a roar in petrol, we hear that in high performance petrol cars.

but you hear that same roar(turbo whistle) in diesels you find it crude [frustration]

petrols are high speed running engines which offer refined and high rpm power...
high speed running engines are used in limited applications that is on a race track where as diesel serves as a backbone of transportation needs( the reason a vehicle was developed in the first place)

races in america had their origins with the mafia with their main intention being to outrun the reach of police cars(law).

since i dont plan to join the ranks of mafia i would prefer a diesel

so diesel is the better yielding fuel . [glasses]

I think we all are moving away from the point for which thread was started.

It is individual's choice of what each like. Not which type of car will suit to him.

My view, Diesel for people who want to drive without much efforts (more torque). And petrol for the true enthusiasts who love driving the way the car loves!
@jihu123 : Please give your choice, what would you like to go with?

^^Whatever one may say,I have now opened all my cards and the last reason I have is:
I drive for driving,not for going A to B(I have a chauffy for that) and hence I love petrol cars.
Okay,diesel keeps the pocket happy but not the heart.

@Superbad:
See my buddy,I know the difference between TSI and D-4D and hence I compare the TSI with Chevrolet 2.0 VCDi and that's the reason I am in favour of TSI also I am hell sure that you haven't yet driven the TSI.

New generation diesel engines have comparatively better sound effect. But it still not better than petrol cars!

Agreed. Diesel for normal people. Petrol for enthusiasts!
For sound, just stand near Merc E350 CDI Blue Efficiency. You will hardly hear anything even in 1st gear.

If you talk about enthusiastic car, you should see BMW 640d or 640d Gran Coupe.

The BMW 640d Gran Coupe tested - YouTube

150 bhp diesal or 150 bhp petrol , which one sounds grand?
150 bhp diesel for the simple reason that the torque will be far greater than petrol.

I was petrol head once, now prefer diesel....hope sports car too come in diesel.

If usage is very often particularly long drives, then Diesel will be good. But if there is rare usage, then Petrol is thee best. Many think that diesel car is much cheaper to run than a Petrol one. Its true, only when we consider running costs. But a Diesel engine's maintanance will literally eat up the amount which you saved while fueling.[anger]

Pros of Diesel:

* Running cost is low.
* Has more FE compared with Petrol.
* More efficient.

Cons:

* Maintanance cost is high.
* Oil needs to be changed frequently else it gives Smoke.
* Noisy.
* Vibrations.

Nowadays engines are coming with improved technology (Petrol & Diesel), so FE wise there is no much difference. Now the cost difference between Petrol and Diesel is 22 Rs per litre. So while filling in bulk, there may be a huge difference. Say for 25 Litres, we pay Rs 550 approximately more for a Petrol car. But mileage doesnt make much difference. But the amount you saved here will be doubled and given, while coming for maintanance for a Diesel one. So i prefer a Ghee (Petrol) drinking machine rather than a Dalda (Diesel) drinking machine.[:)]

See my points in bold.

Cons:

* Maintanance cost is high.

Now a days diesels have much lower maintenance cost(consider mjd's service interval)

* Oil needs to be changed frequently else it gives Smoke.

15000km is the service interval for MJD's not even available in most petrol engines.

* Noisy.

Again see today's diesel engines, you'll hardly be bothered with the noice.

* Vibrations.

Its all about mounting the engine with the chassis, even a petrol engine can vibrate more than a diesel, if not properly mounted.

Nowadays engines are coming with improved technology (Petrol & Diesel), so FE wise there is no much difference.
My petrol indica 1.4 used to deliver 10-12 city-highway.
My punto 90 gives me 12-19 in city and 19-13.5 on highway.

Now the cost difference between Petrol and Diesel is 22 Rs per litre. So
while filling in bulk, there may be a huge difference.

Its approx. 26 in delhi( petrol 73 and diesel 47)

Decide with your calculations yourself.

Re: Petrol or Diesel???

Master

Modern diesel engines are really less noise than the earlier ones, yes we cannot straight away compare them with the petrol cars.

even in bumper to bumper traffic, it is easy to drive diesel car as you just have to release the clutch and use break where in petrol car you need to also use the accelerator
But my petrol Ritz starts moving on release of clutch.In very tight parking situation I use one foot for clutch and other for break without having any problem.I drove WagnoR at driving school. This car requires both clutch and accelerator for moving forward,but its starting is so slow,one don't have bother much for break.

Maintenance costs aside, you don't need the power when you have that much torque. You can shift up at 2,500 RPM and still enjoy the drive. And every good thing has a bad side, you gotta pay up for maintenance. Diesel rocks! Hey, and anyways isn't it better to bang your head on the ASC wall than the fuel bunk pump/wall? At least I think so.

And, once you get used to it the NVH isn't much of a problem, but then you sit in a petrol car and then you're like [frustration] and when you're driving the P car in bumper-bumper traffic or parking/reversing it you're like [:D] "Great thing I didn't buy a petrol!" Happened to me many a times. But yes on the highway a turbo-petrol like the TSI really spices up the drive.
