I think its a Torque Converter, not sure Ciaz uses a CVT. Its a 4 Speed Gearbox. Only City has CVT. This is the same gearbox used in Ritz with slight enhancements I think.
Yes it is 4-speed torque converter, usual 3 speed + overdrive with standard PRND2L configuration, good enough for city driving.

Correct me if I am wrong but AFAIK:
CVT : City, Sunny, Scala
4-speed: Ciaz, Verna
7-speed DSG: Vento, Rapid(??)

I don't think they'd put AMT in C2 segment cars!

@engine The manual says nothing about hill lock so I'd not say that Ciaz has it. I have tried this on my neighborhood slope, the car did not roll back from stationary position on releasing the foot-brake in D mode, at least not for about 1-2 sec (tried only that much), which should be good enough for shifting to gas pedal. But I won't say that that it has hill lock or it does not roll back as I could not find any such mention in manual or in any review or document. The technician advised me to use hand-brake on flyovers.

The Maruti Ciaz website has one picture of auto-transmission: www.marutisuzuki.com/ciaz.aspx >>> transmission

Right, Rapid is available with DSG.
CVT or other auto boxes cannot match supreme smoothness of DSG. Rather we should be thankful to VW group to have brought this cutting edge technology for their C2 segment cars, else that technology would have remained available in D+ segment.
CVT barring the rubber-band effect is better than 4 speed IMO. But 6 speed (like in Elantra) feels better than CVT.

And AMT, please keep it below premium hatch segment, and that suits only there. No offence!

BTW, Ciaz deserved at least 6 speed box. 4 speed tranny looks awkward in C2 segment in the DSG era.

thanks raag73 for clarifying. One more thing is the service interval 12 months for AT. I know it is 12 for MT. There are some tricky slope turns at 90deg in my route to office . Using handbrake will be difficult as there is heavy traffic too. The dealer still doesnt have AT test car.I would wait for some time , i think

Maruti Suzuki Recalls 3,800 Ciaz Sedans for Suspected Faulty Clutch

Maruti Suzuki on Monday said it has recalled 3,796 units of its newly-launched mid-sized premium sedan Ciaz for "suspected fault" with the clutch operation system. The recalled Ciaz units have been manufactured before November 7, Maruti Suzuki said.

"The company has decided to undertake a service campaign for these cars, in the interest of customers. Maruti Suzuki dealers have started to communicate with owners of the impacted vehicles," Maruti Suzuki said in a statement.

The inspection and replacement will be done free of cost to the customer, the company said.

Maruti, India's biggest carmaker, sold nearly 5,232 units of Ciaz in November. In October, the company claimed to have outsold Honda City, its biggest competitor in this segment.

Automobile companies have been pro-active in recalling vehicles in case of safety issues since industry body SIAM initiated a voluntary recall policy in 2012. In the long- run, car recalls are positive for both the customer and the car maker, say experts.

How come MS expect people to bet their post-tax hard earned 1mil on Ciaz AT when TD car is not available?
Does anyone has idea when AT TD cars will be available.

Also, would have loved to see AT in diesel.

Recall in other parts of the world on DQ200 DSG and bad ASS in Vento, Rapid has kept me away from those two.

That's not at all a big deal, they will reduce the booking amount if you want to buy S-Cross. @VM2011 anyways we have to wait until Febuary 2014 for the ciaz ZDI plus. So why not wait for couple of more months for the S-cross. I don't mind putting the money down for this car if dynamics are good and engine has power that can quench my thirst. I understand that S-cross is not a great looking car but I have a hope that it would satisfy me about what I mentioned.

I think I am at the verge of cancelling the booking. I am not sure. Still in a Dilemma. Ciaz is a great car, no offence towards the vehicle. But thinking whether it would satisfy me in terms of power.

1.6 MJD..a lot sooner that anybody could have guessed
Good if it is so but not practical as the cost will go beyond the closest competition. At this point of time Maruti can't afford to.
Once they get a considerable returns they would. But then it would not be earlier than 2016.
The engine in question will be the Fiat's 1.5 MJD and would power most of Maruti's future products till they get their own diesel engine in place, but then that could be limited to not beyond 800 cc, to start with.
