Hmm, [cry]

After reading few posts on GPS here, I would like to know how does those dedicated GPS instruments work ?? like "mapmyindia", I mean how do they update their maps time to time or it is not required
Hi Gurrala, these dedicated GPS has preloaded maps.
Which establishes a connection with satellite
They are connected to satellite which identifies the location through coordinates.
These dedicated devices have accelerometers that can navigate us , with the help of a satellite.
The satellite constantly gives the co-ordinates which is easy for preloaded maps to navigate.
The maps are either stored in the device with limited memory.
Or in a Memory card.
Any updates that are released by the company have to be purchased, if you need updates on new places.

So far my MMI Vx140s is doing the job greatly.

It had come with default v7.0 maps.
You can also find contact number of places that are available along with the address.

On a foggy or cloudy weather the satellite locking takes almost upto 10 minutes.

It needs minimum 2 satellite lock to function.

How good are mobile phones in holding the GPS lock compared to dedicated devices like MMI, Garmin etc.?

I have a Galaxy S2 and it is very slow in getting a GPS lock. Also, once inside a car, it looses the lock and starts searching every now and then.

But I have seen one MMI device on my friend's car which never looses the signals once locked.
Generally cold start of GPS device takes more time to lock than the warm start. Galaxy S2 has A-GPS support. If your phone is rooted then you might want to use FasterFix from market. And set the server for India. If not rooted then you might try app called GPSStatus which will forcibly download the A-GPS state to your device. Generally this will improve the fix for you.
I have used external bluetooth enabled GPS in the past and I feel my S2 locks faster. Yes there are days when GPS does not lock at all then. I try run GPSStatus to update quickly and then it locks immediately.

Try that it might help you.

While going thru for something i came across this. I thought it might be helpful for someone.

SatGuide - 4.3'' Navi with Entertainment - Buy Car GPS & Navigation Devices | Snapdeal!
Sethu thanks for the link, there are lots such devices available. But basically they are just a smart devices/phones with out radio(mobile) component.
I always feel one should not buy these dedicated devices, instead invest on a good mobile phone which serves both functions. You are free to use it anywhere any time since you have it in your pocket always.

Yes I know if we have a mobile phone we can handle lot of situations. I still don't know how this will be useful than mobile, but I had already discussed a point in the same thread that when we get a phone call how the mobile phone handle the situation. We might need to pick the phone and use it which might be a kind of disturbance [I still dont know]

So I thought having a dedicated device for the purpose it might be good.

Sethu,
When you are using the GPS navigation and if you receive a call, you can take the call with out any issues. I generally drive with my bluetooth headset, so whenever I receive a call I just have to accept the call, Your navigation software will keep working in the background, generally GPS navigation software have settings where when on call it will not 'announce the directions' but will be visually guiding you.
If I am in the busy roads with lot of confusion, I just pull over to side and finish my call, then proceed but software will keep running in the background.

So there is nothing to worry about using single device.

Ohh. That is nice to know. Thanks for the info.

I think I should get some nice Android phone. Saddest part is I cant use it in office since camera phones are not allowed [Certification for our data center has this policy].

Even if I buy I can use it only when am outside office.

Let us see.

@Sethu Sir,

Go with Blackberry 8000 series without camera and with GPS[:)]
My advice is to still buy a phone with the Camera, and keep it for your personal use. For office use just use the regular phone, just wondering in your data center are you allowed to use laptops? is so camera on the laptop also not allowed?

Yes, Indian

Lot of companies do not allow mobile with camera and they disable or remove that webcam on laptops. This I have seen more with IT companies in Hyderabad. So all those IT people use two mobile phones one without camera(bare basic one) and other with camera and a proper smartphone.

Yes Sethu, I agree there are lot of rules everywhere but how many of them really required and can be implemented successfully?
You go to any historic place they dont allow you to take video camera(or they charge 250Rs per video camera) but they allow mobile cameras or digital photo cameras. Both can take nice videos. [frustration]

In the case of data centers yes I am sure that they will not be able to block the camera on the laptops, as 99% of business laptops too now equipped with cameras. Yes I do manage a data center myself but we don't have any such rules. But I know if the rules are there we cant do much. [evil]

Well Said. More over when it is based on some management policy we cant do anything. At the beginning it was little bit difficult and it was very sad moment when you see other department people has very good phones.

Now used to it. i have a very basic phone which cost Rs.1300 and happy with it. But when I meet some of my friends [those who are not into IT] they might laugh at me but when I explain they will understand.

That is it.

@rohit
Did not see this thread. Sorry for replying late.
I wont suggest this product as many people complain of the heavy size which hangs on your Original Rear View Mirror. If you ask me, i will tell you to use something which can fit on your 2DIN Head Unit (with audio). And, Groupon is not that worthy site if you compare the quality of product.

@Indian,
Thanks for FasterFix app. Never knew about it ! Downloaded/updated. Hope it does a better job !

Regards,
