Vaibhav,
Sorry to suggest something.
If you have a 4+ inches android phone, then install sygic /mapmyindia from android market (which gives updated maps free even software). Many here using there phone as GPS device and most of them are happy about. You just need a mobile car holder for that. If you do not want to use your mobile, you can even think of buying a dedicated 5" phone (which got gps) and you can use it.
Advantages : You get much better hardware than the 300mhz processor
You can try other navigation software if you require.
You can use as a phone a later stage when you are not using in car.
You can pair with bluetooth device and stream music from your phone to headunit (you can use an aux cable too)

Even the thread starter is using Sygic and he is happy and never purchased a dedicated device.

If you are purchasing a dedicated device, go for a bigger display. A 5" screen so that it does not distract you much .
(Just a suggestion. Rest is your choice)

Actually risk of accident increases using phone as gps. Unnecesary hassles .
What did you mean by that ? typing on phone on the move ? Or falling from car holder ? Or, your phone gets affected during accident ?

Instead of 4" dedicated device, asking you to a better size screen for getting a clearer view of it thus avoiding need of concentration. GPS device/Phone also connected to a holder which is mounted on the windshield or dashboard. So, what exactly you mean by hassles?

If there is a con, let us also know by noting it down. I will rethink using my phone as GPS if i see some risk of increasing accident !

Thanks

Very well said, risk of accident by having GPS based phone? [frustration].
Only thing I can think about is while driving you dont carry the phone at all since it would distract you when you get calls, I agree with that logic, but I can not still think about any other reason :stupid:

I have been using phone based GPS more than 10 years and its the next best thing happened after the innovation of smart phones IMO.

I mean i used to use mobile while driving and also use gps side by side. This causes mind and eyes diverting from road for few seconds which can cause accident

Thanks Appu, your adviced helped me to save 18k and also better use of galaxy tab.I did several trip using sygic map and it has precision of like 5 meters, it worked well even in jungles of MP and CG. Now my lumia has also drive here, this is also wonderful but not as good as 7inch tab.I just pair my tab with Zabra freeway or HU, I dont need to know local language to ask route.

Any recent updates please? Looking forward to buying a MMI Lx340.. was 4K around 2 months back on ebay. now shot up to 6.4K (whereas the MMI website says the MRP as 6K.. beat that!)

.. or better still any pointers towards downloading offline maps? I have an external GPS receiver with me and a spare phone.

Please suggest. Thanks!
