I have always used my wife's Android mobile and google maps for the navigation. WHen we enter the route, the map application creates the route accessing the internet and once the route have been created, then it does not requires the internet. Only GPS is required. We have used it in the places where network was zero but still application was showing the route properly. [clap]
dharmesh, really surprised [surprise]
Unless you have offline saved google maps you can not have navigation work! Your device needs to download the maps as you navigate to new location. May be it would have worked for you for a already loaded map, but if you say travel 50km(just my approximation) then if you dont have net connectivity it would fail.
Please correct me if wrong. I never used offline google maps but that's the way it would have worked.

It never failed for me. But in the middle of no where if you change the route then it will again require internet to get the initial route and that's when it downloads the route. When routing if there is no internet it will not show map in detail but only show the route info.

Gurrala, dont get dedicated GPS devices. Basically they are PDAs. They have everything same as your mobile phone.
So no point just buying one more device, rather buy a better phone. This way if you are not happy you can update your app to something else. You can have google maps along with it. More over phone travels with you always![;)]

It is not about only dedicated map device it is also a case of Offline map application where maps are only updated for 6 months once, so what ever happens in 6 months you never going to see in your maps.

this the reason I asking you to use Google Maps as default.

infact search engine of offline maps are very poor some time they dont return anything for your search but Google understands your input even though you supplied wrong keywords and returns possible match.

and also there are plenty of apps from google to make your travel better, example my track from google tracks your all routes and next time without any data connection you able to find same place and route.

My suggestions:

Samsung:=> S duos, S advance, Grand (these 3 has very decent hardware and advanced features, JB is available for all)

Sony:=> Xperia P & U(memory issue but nice dual core fast phones), Xperia sola(balanced phone in all aspects)

HTC:=> I dont see any mobile under 20 is VFM but One S is very nice but costly

LG:=> pethetic service

Micromax, LAVA, Korbon and other:=> bad for health

Korbon launched new quadcore phone for 10k but again this is from mediatech cheap in quality.

@Indian you yet to show me how to search properly on sygic, now also I tried but it returned me null, any search engine setup is required?

Ranger thank you for for the information, but all this belongs to mobiles, hence this can be placed in this thread http://www.theautomotiveindia.com/f...464-suggest-new-android-phone-around-10k.html

We continue our discussion there about mobiles.

Mods: please move the appropriate mobile information posts to the mentioned thread above.

If you are talking about google search inside the Sygic then there is nothing to setup, it just shows the items based on where you are. Ofcoruse you should have internet connectivity. I think its available version 11.2 onwards.

Sygic has large POI built in I should say it gets almost everything 99% time.

If a location is not found by sygic what i do is, On my computer i search for the location and locate the GPS co-ordinates. That co-ordinate I feed to sygic and save that location.(this will work only for planned travel)

If in hurry and want to search yes 'Google' maps. [clap]

How good are mobile phones in holding the GPS lock compared to dedicated devices like MMI, Garmin etc.?

I have a Galaxy S2 and it is very slow in getting a GPS lock. Also, once inside a car, it looses the lock and starts searching every now and then.

But I have seen one MMI device on my friend's car which never looses the signals once locked.

Something strange bro, I never faced such issue infact I found very good flexibility with decent phones
