IDC has today released its Mobile Phone Tracker report for the second quarter of 2013, in which it shows that Windows Phone is now the second most widely used operating system in the region.
The report shows that Windows Phone has been ranked second in Mexico for the second consecutive quarter. Furthermore, in the previous quarter, Windows Phone was also ranked second in both Colombia and Peru. It is important to highlight the fact that Colombia is one of the countries with the highest user preference ratings, with 25.6 percent of the market share. In other countries, such as Argentina, Chile and Brazil, Microsoft’s mobile platform has also grown in popularity, ranking in third place during the previous quarter.

There was 12 percent growth compared to the previous quarter, during which the platform was ranked fourth on the Latin American market.

“Reports show an important increase in the positioning of this operating system in Latin America. The market availability of new devices will be a factor in ensuring this trend endures over the next three months,” said Oliver Flores, regional manager for Mobile Phones at IDC Latin America.

Liliana González, director of the Windows Phone Division for Latin America, stated that “during this year’s Mobile World Congress, we set ourselves the goal of being the second most widely used mobile platform in Latin America by the end of 2013, and we are overjoyed to be able to announce that these reports show that we have achieved this five months before the end of the year.” She also commented that: “We will continue working alongside Nokia to offer more and more people in Latin America the holistic experience which Windows Phone has for them, in order to offer a more personalized smartphone which is the best for the Windows environment and the best hardware for people and companies.”

In Latin America, there are more than 20 countries where the Windows Phone range of devices is available, from low-end smartphones, such as the Nokia Lumia 520, to those with the most advanced features available on the market, such as the Nokia Lumia 920, but all of which offer the same experience, thanks to the Microsoft platform.

A developer in China named Tom Myles has found something interesting on his logs. He spotted a phone running Windows Phone OS version 8.10.12166 installing his app. The developer, whose claim to fame is Chinese app Love Wallpaper HD, also has spotted phones installing his app that were powered by Windows Phones OS versions 8.10.12073.0, 8.10.12086.0, 8.10.12100.0 and 8.10.12102.0.

The highest version of Windows Phone that the average Joe has access to is 8.0.10328.78. Considering that the first three numbers on the mysterious versions are 8.10, what Myles could have discovered is Microsoft doing some internal testing of Windows Phone 8.1.

Expected to be coming on Windows Phone 8.1 is a notifications center along with improvements to multi-tasking capabilities, and a screen rotation lock. It seems that Microsoft will push out the GDR3 update prior to the Windows Phone 8.1 update and that some features, like the screen rotation lock, require GDR3 to be installed first. This means that you shouldn't expect Windows Phone 8.1 to start rolling out until sometime in 2014.

Delta Equips 19,000 Flight Attendants with Windows Phone Handsets
And the pilots will be getting tablets, too

Microsoft announced today that Delta Air Lines has handed out Windows Phone handsets to over 19,000 flight attendants worldwide. The attendants will use the Nokia Lumia 820 with Windows Phone 8 to access an Avanade point of sale (POS) app that was built on the Microsoft Dynamics for Retail mobile POS platform.

"Delta's 19,000 in-flight professionals are there for the safety and comfort of our customers, and equipping them with innovative solutions means they can better meet our customers' needs on board every flight," Delta senior vice president Joanne Smith said. "This is yet another way we're investing in technology to improve the customer experience.

Delta will use Windows Phone to run credit card transactions in flight for services such as food purchases, seat upgrades, headset rentals and more. The airline will be able to offer customers electronic receipts and coupons, and do so more quickly and efficiently. The phones will also handle passenger manifestos, frequent flyer info, connecting gate updates, and flight attendant scheduling updates, Microsoft says.

According to Delta, the flight attendants will begin using Windows Phone starting today. But I heard about the deal back in July, and was offered some further news: The usage will eventually reach 22,000 flight attendants. And Delta will be outfitting its pilots with Windows tablets this fall as well.

Delta services over 160 million passengers a year and operates almost 5,000 flights a day. It is the world's largest passenger airline by passengers carried and second largest by miles flown.

And

Steve Ballmer

In an internal memo to staff Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced his intention to retire within 12 months.

He writes:

I am writing to let you know that I will retire as CEO of Microsoft within the next 12 months, after a successor is chosen. There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time. My original thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our transformation to a devices and services company focused on empowering customers in the activities they value most. We need a CEO who will be here longer term for this new direction. You can read the press release on Microsoft News Center.
This is a time of important transformation for Microsoft. Our new Senior Leadership team is amazing. The strategy we have generated is first class. Our new organization, which is centered on functions and engineering areas, is right for the opportunities and challenges ahead.
Microsoft is an amazing place. I love this company. I love the way we helped invent and popularize computing and the PC. I love the bigness and boldness of our bets. I love our people and their talent and our willingness to accept and embrace their range of capabilities, including their quirks. I love the way we embrace and work with other companies to change the world and succeed together. I love the breadth and diversity of our customers, from consumer to enterprise, across industries, countries, and people of all backgrounds and age groups.
I am proud of what we have achieved. We have grown from $7.5 million to nearly $78 billion since I joined Microsoft, and we have grown from employing just over 30 people to almost 100,000. I feel good about playing a role in that success and having committed 100 percent emotionally all the way. We have more than 1 billion users and earn a great profit for our shareholders. We have delivered more profit and cash return to shareholders than virtually any other company in history.
I am excited by our mission of empowering the world and believe in our future success. I cherish my Microsoft ownership, and look forward to continuing as one of Microsoft’s largest owners.
This is an emotional and difficult thing for me to do. I take this step in the best interests of the company I love; it is the thing outside of my family and closest friends that matters to me most.
Microsoft has all its best days ahead. Know you are part of the best team in the industry and have the right technology assets. We cannot and will not miss a beat in these transitions. I am focused and driving hard and know I can count on all of you to do the same. Let’s do ourselves proud.

something different for a change

Microsoft and Google join forces to sue NSA over FISA transparency issues
Microsoft and Google have never been best of buds. But, when the 2 companies aren’t arguing over trivial things like who’s allowed access to YouTube, they’re joining forces to sue the pants off the US government. Why?

It has a little something to do with the NSA tying up Google and Microsoft hands when it comes to making public information relating to FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act). Long story short: they want to be more transparent, our Government says, “NO.”

Both Google and Microsoft have officially filed complaints back in June and according to them, they believe it’s within their constitutional right to be more transparent, and share much of this information with the public. More recently, Microsoft and Google met with Government lawyers and while it seemed that progress was being made, after several delays, talks ended in failure.

Microsoft’s Vice President of Legal Affairs Brad Smith mentions in the company’s official blog that, while the Government made a good first step — after allowing the number of security requests from the past 12 months to be published — there’s still more work to be done.

Microsoft (and Google) want even greater transparency that gives them the right to publish, not only the number of security requests for user content, but how many of those requests included even greater details like the specific text of an email. They feel that this is within their constitutional rights. Of course, let’s not forget that this would all be done in a way that wouldn’t put our national security at risk.

Smith goes onto to say that until both kinds of data can be made public, government cooperation is “incomplete”. But it’s not just Google that’s working with Microsoft, other companies are also backing the tech giants, who hope that Congress will give them the right to disclose this information to the public, and “ensure that Constitutional safeguards prevail”.

What do you think?

Should the US Government be forced to share this additional data? Is the Government already going too far with how much access they’re forcing large corporations to provide without the need for warrants? Where is all of this taking us in terms of privacy, the internet, and beyond?

Kantar: Windows Phone hits record high of 8.2% market share in Europe | WMPoweruser

The latest smartphone sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, for the three months to July 2013, shows Windows Phone has posted its highest ever level of 8.2% across the five major European markets*, emerging as a key player in the smartphone race.

Dominic continues: “Windows Phone’s success has been in convincing first time smartphone buyers to choose one of its devices with 42% of sales over the past year coming from existing featurephone owners. This is a much higher proportion than Android and iOS. The Lumia 520 is hitting a sweet spot, offering the price and quality that new smartphone buyers are looking for.

was going to post the same news :/
was a fan of their build quality not a fan of their current OS partner though.

REDMOND, Washington and ESPOO, Finland – Sept. 3, 2013 – Microsoft Corporation and Nokia Corporation today announced that the Boards of Directors for both companies have decided to enter into a transaction whereby Microsoft will purchase substantially all of Nokia’s Devices & Services business, license Nokia’s patents, and license and use Nokia’s mapping services.

Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will pay EUR 3.79 billion to purchase substantially all of Nokia’s Devices & Services business, and EUR 1.65 billion to license Nokia’s patents, for a total transaction price of EUR 5.44 billion in cash. Microsoft will draw upon its overseas cash resources to fund the transaction. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014, subject to approval by Nokia’s shareholders, regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

Building on the partnership with Nokia announced in February 2011 and the increasing success of Nokia’s Lumia smartphones, Microsoft aims to accelerate the growth of its share and profit in mobile devices through faster innovation, increased synergies, and unified branding and marketing. For Nokia, this transaction is expected to be significantly accretive to earnings, strengthen its financial position, and provide a solid basis for future investment in its continuing businesses.

“It’s a bold step into the future – a win-win for employees, shareholders and consumers of both companies. Bringing these great teams together will accelerate Microsoft’s share and profits in phones, and strengthen the overall opportunities for both Microsoft and our partners across our entire family of devices and services,” said Steve Ballmer, Microsoft chief executive officer. “In addition to their innovation and strength in phones at all price points, Nokia brings proven capability and talent in critical areas such as hardware design and engineering, supply chain and manufacturing management, and hardware sales, marketing and distribution.”

“We are excited and honored to be bringing Nokia’s incredible people, technologies and assets into our Microsoft family. Given our long partnership with Nokia and the many key Nokia leaders that are joining Microsoft, we anticipate a smooth transition and great execution,” Ballmer said. “With ongoing share growth and the synergies across marketing, branding and advertising, we expect this acquisition to be accretive to our adjusted earnings per share starting in FY15, and we see significant long-term revenue and profit opportunities for our shareholders.”

“For Nokia, this is an important moment of reinvention and from a position of financial strength, we can build our next chapter,” said Risto Siilasmaa, Chairman of the Nokia Board of Directors and, following today’s announcement, Nokia Interim CEO. “After a thorough assessment of how to maximize shareholder value, including consideration of a variety of alternatives, we believe this transaction is the best path forward for Nokia and its shareholders. Additionally, the deal offers future opportunities for many Nokia employees as part of a company with the strategy, financial resources and determination to succeed in the mobile space.”

“Building on our successful partnership, we can now bring together the best of Microsoft’s software engineering with the best of Nokia’s product engineering, award-winning design, and global sales, marketing and manufacturing,” said Stephen Elop, who following today’s announcement is stepping aside as Nokia President and CEO to become Nokia Executive Vice President of Devices & Services. “With this combination of talented people, we have the opportunity to accelerate the current momentum and cutting-edge innovation of both our smart devices and mobile phone products.”

Nokia has outlined its expected focus upon the closing of the transaction in a separate press release published today.

TERMS OF THE AGREEMENT

Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire substantially all of Nokia’s Devices and Services business, including the Mobile Phones and Smart Devices business units as well as an industry-leading design team, operations including all Nokia Devices & Services-related production facilities, Devices & Services-related sales and marketing activities, and related support functions. At closing, approximately 32,000 people are expected to transfer to Microsoft, including 4,700 people in Finland and 18,300 employees directly involved in manufacturing, assembly and packaging of products worldwide. The operations that are planned to be transferred to Microsoft generated an estimated EUR 14.9 billion, or almost 50 percent of Nokia’s net sales for the full year 2012.

Microsoft is acquiring Nokia’s Smart Devices business unit, including the Lumia brand and products. Lumia handsets have won numerous awards and have grown in sales in each of the last three quarters, with sales reaching 7.4 million units in the second quarter of 2013.

As part of the transaction, Nokia is assigning to Microsoft its long-term patent licensing agreement with Qualcomm, as well as other licensing agreements.

Microsoft is also acquiring Nokia’s Mobile Phones business unit, which serves hundreds of millions of customers worldwide, and had sales of 53.7 million units in the second quarter of 2013. Microsoft will acquire the Asha brand and will license the Nokia brand for use with current Nokia mobile phone products. Nokia will continue to own and manage the Nokia brand. This element provides Microsoft with the opportunity to extend its service offerings to a far wider group around the world while allowing Nokia’s mobile phones to serve as an on-ramp to Windows Phone.

Nokia will retain its patent portfolio and will grant Microsoft a 10-year license to its patents at the time of the closing. Microsoft will grant Nokia reciprocal rights to use Microsoft patents in its HERE services. In addition, Nokia will grant Microsoft an option to extend this mutual patent agreement in perpetuity.

In addition, Microsoft will become a strategic licensee of the HERE platform, and will separately pay Nokia for a four-year license.

Microsoft will also immediately make available to Nokia EUR 1.5 billion of financing in the form of three EUR 500 million tranches of convertible notes that Microsoft would fund from overseas resources. If Nokia decides to draw down on this financing option, Nokia would pay back these notes to Microsoft from the proceeds of the deal upon closing. The financing is not conditional on the transaction closing.

Microsoft also announced that it has selected Finland as the home for a new data center that will serve Microsoft consumers in Europe. The company said it would invest more than a quarter-billion dollars in capital and operation of the new data center over the next few years, with the potential for further expansion over time.

NOKIA LEADERSHIP CHANGES

Nokia expects that Stephen Elop, Jo Harlow, Juha Putkiranta, Timo Toikkanen, and Chris Weber would transfer to Microsoft at the anticipated closing of the transaction. Nokia has outlined these changes in more detail in a separate release issued today.

a big negative

Elop was M$ Mole. Nokia - the brand has taken a big downward hit.

This Elop killed Meego, said no to Linux, decimated the premium Vertu, closed many factories & sold their head office, gave pink slips to most Symbian developers in the name of cutting costs, End result > made nokia sell out for peanuts even cheaper than SKYPE and for comparison sake less than half the amount Google Paid for Motorola.

for a platform to succeed you need various vendors making the phones like HTC and Huawei. I dont see them tying with M$ now in the long run and let me predict, nokia is gonna end up like BB.

Nokia chose Windows Phone because it feared Samsung would 'come to dominate Android'

Nokia's decision in 2011 to pin the future of its smartphone business on Windows Phone has been heavily scrutinized over the years, but the reasoning behind that choice is only becoming fully clear now. When asked last week if he regretted not choosing Android, CEO Stephen Elop told reporters that he's "very happy with the decision we made." He added, according to The Guardian, that "What we were worried about a couple of years ago was the very high risk that one hardware manufacturer could come to dominate Android." At the time, Nokia "had a suspicion of who it might be, because of the resources available, the vertical integration." That company, of course, is Samsung.

Elop continued, "Now fast forward to today and examine the Android ecosystem, and there's a lot of good devices from many different companies, but one company has essentially now become the dominant player." What concerned Nokia about becoming an Android manufacturer, then, was that it wouldn't be able to scale up quick enough to compete with incumbents — particularly Samsung — which, at that time, already had a bit of a foothold in the market. As Elop said last week, "we were respectful of the fact that we were quite late in making that decision. Many others were in that space already."

"WHAT WE WERE WORRIED ABOUT... WAS THE VERY HIGH RISK THAT ONE HARDWARE MANUFACTURER COULD COME TO DOMINATE ANDROID."

The company also saw an opportunity to market itself as an alternative to Apple and Samsung. Elop told reporters that Nokia can more easily negotiate with carriers — which hold the keys to many markets like the US — as they want to talk "with different people and keep pressure on everybody and have the best range of options, [they want] that third alternative." He added, "So strategically we have an opening with AT&T and every other operator in the world... because we've taken that path as the third ecosystem."

The decision, then, can be seen as Nokia accepting that it should aim for third place. And considering Nokia's special deal with Microsoft — which includes $250 million in quarterly platform payments for a limited time — the choice was a bit easier. Looking at the decision in this light, Nokia may have done well for itself. In the past quarter the company sold more Lumias than BlackBerry sold phones, solidifying its spot in third place. Its fears of a Samsung-dominated Android market have come true, and competitors like HTC have struggled to keep up with the Korean company. Nevertheless, Nokia still has a long way to go: it lost €115 million (roughly $151 million) last quarter.
