Had a demo of Lumia 925 two days ago.UI is same as all Windows phones. But,slimmer than 920.Not as slim as iPhone 5.
You are right the lumia 925 is just 1mm more then iPhone 5 .

]It looks like Motorola still doesn’t know how to make a top-tier smartphone camera. Aside from the Moto X’s low-light shot, most of the images are noisy, grainy, and flat-out unpleasant. The prevalence of blue in all the photos seems to suggest serious white balance issues, something that could potentially be remedied with a software update. Comparing the phone to the Lumia 1020 just made the flaws of the Moto X camera that much more apparent, and you’d be wise to avoid it if you’re big on taking photos with your smartphone. The Lumia 1020 is hands down the best phone for taking photos and it’s unlikely to be dethroned by anything other than another Lumia anytime soon.]

Last night, Windows Phone Central broke the news about the new Microsoft branded YouTube app essentially breaking. We investigated the problem and concluded that it was due to a revoked developer key. Such a scenario could only happen if Microsoft forgot to update it or if Google yanked it.

That latter situation implies that Google did not authorize the app and was taking direct action of their own by disabling the video player on all Windows Phones. Indeed, just a few hours ago this was confirmed when Microsoft said as much in a note to the press.

Now, David Howard, Corporate Vice President & Deputy General Counsel at Microsoft, has taken to TechNet, Microsoft’s blog on legal and public policy. Needless to say, the nearly 1000 word statement is chock full of information and more details on the matter, making an excellent read.

HTML5, branding and unfair requests

Presenting Microsoft’s side, which of course is expected to be biased towards themselves, Howard finally gives the details behind the current situation with Google.

It’s noted that for a few years now, Microsoft has been striving for a comparable YouTube experience that is found on the iPhone and Android—something for which we see as reasonable. Redmond reiterated that claim earlier this year soon after Windows Phone 8 launched. Google, however, was reportedly not willing to share certain data with Microsoft on to make that happen. As a result, up until April 2013, Microsoft had a much inferior YouTube experience.

This past spring, Microsoft released their version of a YouTube app and it was very well received by the community. However, Google took issue with it and asked that it be removed. Microsoft obliged with the condition that they can work with Google to release an app of comparative performance with their competitors (iOS and Android).

Microsoft agreed to Google’s terms and in version 3.2 of the YouTube app, released earlier this week, they had enabled Google’s advertisements, disabled video downloads and eliminated the ability for users to view reserved videos.

But there was evidently one more thing Google wanted: the app to be coded in HTML5.

"It seems to us that Google’s reasons for blocking our app are manufactured so that we can’t give our users the same experience Android and iPhone users are getting. The roadblocks Google has set up are impossible to overcome, and they know it." - David Howard
Corporate Vice President & Deputy General Counsel, Microsoft

Microsoft notes that this was an unusual request since iOS and Android are currently not encoded in HTML5 and moreover, after investigating whether it could be done both companies agreed that making an HTML5 app would be technically difficult and time consuming (and perhaps that was Google’s intent).

This was the breaking point as Microsoft decided to release the non-HTML5 version of the app with the intention of returning to the matter later with Google.

Other lingering issues

Other problems that Google cites are ads “based on conditions imposed by content creators” aren’t always displayed. Microsoft claims that they need more data for this, something for which Google reportedly won’t share.

Finally, Google evidently now has a problem with the branding i.e. it seems like an official Google app when it’s made by Microsoft. Another reason is that according to Google, this new app provides a “degraded experience”, something for which most users have not objected too, making it vacuous.

Where to next?

It is clear Microsoft is ratcheting up the PR war by releasing this statement. From their perspective, Google has set prejudicial requirements for Windows Phone that iOS and Android are not obliged to meet. To that end, especially the request for the app to be in HTML5, it does seem that Google here is behaving rather dishonestly.

However, we should note that Google has yet to go into as much detail and surely they have their side as well. Regardless, this dispute has clearly crossed a line and Windows Phone users are suffering at their expense.

Analysts call rumored Nokia Windows RT tablet plans bizarre

If true, reports that Nokia plans to release a tablet running Microsoft’s failed Windows RT OS are “bizarre” and “highly surprising” according to analysts who think the company should focus on its struggling smartphone business.

The Finnish phone maker is going to launch the tablet in September, according to The Verge. The plans, if they turn out to be true, are surprising for a couple of reasons, said Informa Telecoms & Media analyst Malik Saadi.

“First of all the OS has been a flop, there is no doubt about that. So the choice to go with Windows RT is bizarre,” Saadi said.

Just 200,000 Windows RT tablets were shipped during the second quarter, according to IDC.

Secondly, putting out a tablet at this point makes little sense because Nokia is still struggling make its Windows Phone-based smartphones a success. Even if sales are improving, Nokia still needs to focus its efforts on that task, according to Saadi.

“At this stage it is really risky for Nokia to enter the tablet market,” Saadi said.

CCS Insight’s director of research Ben Wood agreed on both points.

“I have to say I find it highly surprising that Nokia would want to launch a Windows RT tablet ... A more important priority is a smartphone with 5-inch plus screen,” Wood said.

The only reason it might make sense is if Nokia has a large order from an operator for such a product, according to Wood.

The report comes as Microsoft’s few remaining partners on Windows RT seem to be backing away from the OS. That makes a product from Nokia even more difficult to understand, Wood said.

Last month, Lenovo discontinued online sales of the Yoga 11 convertible with Windows RT, which made analysts question the vendor’s commitment to the OS. Asus has said it is pulling back from Windows RT to focus on Windows 8 tablets running on Intel processors.

If Nokia is dead set on putting out a tablet, it should also choose Windows 8 over Windows RT, according to Saadi.

During the second quarter, the number of tablets running regular Windows increased to 1.8 million, according to IDC. To date, Android has been far more successful than the Windows 8 platform. However, Microsoft-based products are starting to make notable inroads on the market, it said.

The number of Android-based tablets increased year-on-year by over 160 percent to 28.2 million during the second quarter, while Apple shipped 14.6 million iPads, a 14 percent decrease.

Overall, the worldwide tablet market slowed down during the second quarter as total volumes fell by 9.7 percent from the first three months of the year. However, the 45.1 million units that were shipped in the second quarter was a 59.6 percent increase from the same quarter last year, according to IDC.

Nokia would not comment on the reports.

One of the most overlooked features on Windows Phone 8 is the ability to install apps from the SD card. Most people may not be aware of this feature and it does come in handy if you were to reset your phone in the near future to have all your apps backed up on the SD card.

People often think that since you download the app onto the SD card this is where it’s installed but this is not the case. This is where Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 have their own advantages in this scenario. On Windows Phone 7, when an SD card is inserted, it’s simply merged into one therefore, allowing an increase in memory to apps. For example, if you insert an 8GB SD card into an 8GB device, you now have 16GB to install apps.

One issue with this was that once the SD card was inserted and used in Windows Phone 7, the memory card is now rendered useless and the device will require a hard reset before it is functional again without the SD card, Windows Phone 8 however, is a completely different story.

SD cards are removable and usable in Windows Phone 8 devices and both requires no reset to use and unlike Windows Phone 7, both memories are separate, which means apps can’t be installed onto the SD card but can be installed from it. I often had difficulties getting this to work but I finally found a procedure that worked. For this to work, you need your PC and your WP8 device, Check out the details below:

How to Install apps from the SD card

To download .XAP files from the Windows Phone Store on the web
Open your browser on your PC and go to The Smartphone Reinvented Around You | Windows Phone (United States).
Search for the app you want to download.
Scroll down on the webpage, and then on the left, click Download and install manually (below the app requirements and supported languages).
When prompted, save the .XAP file to a location on your computer.
Copy the .XAP file to the root of your memory card (where your Music and Pictures folders are located.
After copying the XAP file to your memory card remove the USB and restart your device and proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: To install apps and games from your phone’s SD card
After your device turns on, leave your device for around 5 mins. then follow the instructions below.
On your device hit Start , tap Store , and then tap SD card.
Select the apps you want, and then tap Install.
Installed apps appear in the App list and games appear in the Games Hub. Depending on the specific app or game, you’ll be able to use them as follows:
If you still don’t see the SD card option present you should try restarting and giving your device 5 minutes. Did the instructions help? Did this work for you? Leave your comment below and tell us how it went.

Google’s spiteful and unreasonable blocking of YouTube services on Windows Phone reached absurd levels this past week: After Microsoft issued what it said was the officially sanctioned YouTube app for the platform, Google blocked it just a day later. In this astonishing Cold War between two of tech’s biggest giants, Microsoft has done the right thing by users and Google has not. Why is Google so afraid of Windows Phone?

As with previous issues between the two companies—the widely criticized but deadly-accurate Scroogled campaign, for example, or Google’s inane decision to end support for Exchange ActiveSync (EAS)—I’m more surprised by the absurd Google apologists I see in the press and in tech blogs than I am by Google’s standard user-adverse behavior. Folks, wake up. Google is consistently doing the wrong thing. The wrong thing morally and the wrong thing for users.

And so it is with YouTube on Windows Phone.

According to the Microsoft executive in charge of the firm’s litigation and antitrust activities, the firm addressed all of Google’s previous issues with the YouTube app for Windows Phone 8 before republishing it last week. Then Google blocked the app, so that users today see the following error. Now, nothing works.

Here’s what happened.

“Google asked us to transition our app to a new coding language, HTML5,” Microsoft corporate vice president David Howards explains. “This was an odd request since neither YouTube’s iPhone app nor its Android app are built on HTML5. Nevertheless, we dedicated significant engineering resources to examine the possibility. At the end of the day, experts from both companies recognized that building a YouTube app based on HTML5 would be technically difficult and time consuming, which is why we assume YouTube has not yet made the conversion for its iPhone and Android apps.”

“For this reason, we made a decision this week to publish our non-HTML5 app while committing to work with Google long-term on an app based on HTML5. We believe this approach delivers our customers a short term experience on par with the other platforms while putting us in the same position as Android and iOS in enabling an eventual transition to new technology. Google, however, has decided to block our mutual customers from accessing our new app.”

Howard goes on to explain that Google’s reasons for blocking this new version of the YouTube app for Windows Phone are completely “manufactured”—which they are—to ensure that Windows Phone users can’t have the same quality YouTube experience that users on iPhone and Android receive. “The roadblocks Google has set up are impossible to overcome, and they know it,” he adds.

More troubling, Howard explains that Google is using secret APIs in its own YouTube app implementations and that it won’t provide those APIs to Microsoft even though they’re required to provide the YouTube advertising experience that Google demands. Folks, that’s not ironic. It’s full-blown hypocritical.

“Google just doesn’t want Windows Phone users to have the same experience as Android and Apple users, and their objections are nothing other than excuses,” Howard says in a clear language that Microsoft should examine using more frequently. “Nonetheless, we are committed to giving our users the experience they deserve, and are happy to work with Google to solve any legitimate concerns they may have. In the meantime, we once again request that Google stop blocking our YouTube app.”

Off topic -What exactly is the reason for 80% market share ?
Answering Raja's question in this thread rather.
Google strategy is sheer alien brilliance if you really delve in to understanding it, android was merely a pilot in 2007 and in 6 years about 80% market share, how many other businesses in the world can do that - it needs a tremendous vision and execution. Plus it was not really a first mover in the smartphone space, i had a htc windows phone over 10 years back - but really it was apple which made the phone smart.

One has to merely understand google's monetization technique(and they had the least of patents which it comes to technology, they are a new company by that sense) - we think we hardly pay for their services and everything comes free but in reality we pay a huge price and thats our privacy - that's the catch. How google set up this ecosystem is sheer brilliance. Probably over 70% of google users dont even understand the price they are paying(and to many it doesn't matter!).

While most are still living in a license realty based world - google completely changed the game (am not just referring to android, look at their search and maps business - its centric to everything now, how they have integrated it all is biblical and many still don't realize how make their billions)

I am not in love with Android but i like the way they think and go about their business - its nothing but sheer brilliance, ill never be attached to any platform, and every time there comes a time to buy a phone I like to try out something new and powerful - having said that I have used most but ios yet. So may be someday ill try that as well.

And what about Microsoft which gained 90% of market share in shortest amount of time inspite of having Mac OS an d Linux ? How come google is the only company ? .infact Microsoft charged and charges money for windows yet has highest % of market share for decades now .

Google gives android free , and hence the high market share . And even 2000rs android phone sold in china count here . Its a different question that all phone makers other then samsung is reporting loss . Lg seem to earn a bit these days .

Best and funny thing is it seems google works for Microsoft . Google devlops android as a free open source project . And the more android handsets are sold the more money Microsoft makes .

Google unlawfully used technology from Oracle, Microsoft and others when creating its Android and Chrome operating systems, leaving its vendor partners exposed. Rather than engaging in expensive and often drawn out lawsuits, a majority of Android vendors have signed licensing agreements with patent holders. Microsoft has already signed licensing agreements with more than 20 Android manufacturers, including big-name players such as HTC, Samsung and LG. The company claims that 80% of Android smartphones sold in the U.S. and most devices sold throughout the world are now covered under its various agreements.

Geoff Duncan at DigitalTrends estimates that if Microsoft averaged a royalty of $1 per each Android device, it could generate roughly $430 million in revenue this year. Microsoft is estimated to collect somewhere near $8 per device, however, meaning its royalty fees could total $3.4 billion in 2013.

As Android device shipments increase, so will Microsoft’s revenue. If half of the 1.5 billion Android devices that are estimated to ship worldwide in 2017 resulted in a royalty fee paid to Microsoft, the company could earn $5.9 billion dollars. Microsoft claims to earn royalties from a “majority” of Android vendors worldwide, though. Based on that information, if the company were to collect royalties from 75% of Android vendors in 2017, it could pull in an estimated $8.8 billion in additional revenue.
Microsoft’s Android licensing agreements could earn it $8.8B by 2017 | BGR
Who is brilliant here when it comes to earning massive passive money ?

And android is not new its since 2003 acquired later by google in 2005

Android, Inc. was founded in Palo Alto, California in October 2003 by Andy Rubin (co-founder of Danger),[29] Rich Miner (co-founder of Wildfire Communications, Inc.),[30] Nick Sears[31] (once VP at T-Mobile), and Chris White (headed design and interface development at WebTV)[12] to develop, in Rubin's words "smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner's location and preferences
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_(operating_system)

And Microsoft had to completely build a new OS ground up on a different concept and platform . And they started late hence the less traction . And again they charge , google gives it free .

Google is primarily not a software company , it is a advertising company which gives you free services to use and in return collect massive amount of perosnal data from you which they sell it to their clients through which they can advertise their products its a unique , covert way of doing business .

I will be listing the amount of data google collects on you , its something more then one can imagine . Is it bad ? It depends on how you see it . Will post it in a consecutive post since how much google collects data about you can't come in one post [;)]

Their new moto x phone has one core constant awake listening and recording everything you talk on their servers .

While most are still living in a license realty based world - google completely changed the game (am not just referring to android, look at their search and maps business - its centric to everything now, how they have integrated it all is biblical and many still don't realize how make their billions)
True and hence it is turning out to be monopoly now and its also not healthy intellectually . Google is actually in a way now controlling your intellectual growth too by manipulating your online life with algorithms .

+1 Microsoft is a great company no doubt, what Bill Gates did with Windows desktop back then is what Google is doing in the mobility space leveraging cloud now.

MS and others like Apple have to resort to patents now - thats the best strategy for them, because thats where google has least strengths. If you notice most tech titans of the last century have either perished by selling off their patents or still surviving on their patents. ex:- patents of companies like nortel.

But look at the revenue explosion at google last few years and you will see the real picture they already did over 50Billion in 2012(and look at the amazing profit ratio as well) and the rate at which they are growing makes it mind-boggling purely as a business case. I was stunned to read 40% of internet traffic went down just because google had an outage. MS and Steve Ballmer have already admitted their fallacies in the recent years but i still hope they bounce back hard - they have a long way to go.

+1 on the privacy part, you are selling your soul to the devil in return for what seems like freebies

True it is Larry page the main guy here behind their business model . Sergei binn the innovative type guy .

As we know life in general follows the pattern which Mother Nature follows and its never linear . Its all very non linear with so many ups and downs .

And history is witness that yesterday's giants in every field becoming obsolete in no time . Few distruptions like a iPhone and iPad and a iPod can change completely the market dynamics and can create a paradgim shift .

Google seems unstoppable now , but there will be a distruption a outlier kind of a moment which will again break the trend and swing the wave other side . And soon the better becuase more the competetion better for we the consumers .

And about privacy the biggest drawback IMHO is your world view becomes tailored and here the tailor is not you but google . Google decides what you will see and what your perceptions about life will be . This sometimes scares me .

Although no machine can override human will and choice google is comming dangerously close in controlling that because today's world , rather today's century is not about industries like the 20th century it's about technology and google is ahead in that game already .

equally dangerous is facebook, i used a phrase pink panty in one conversation with a friend and for 2 months i could see a pink panty advertisement on the right side. i got so fedup with it that i searched for a script to disable that bar. the amount of tracking that goes on is disturbing at times. these guys use all kind of subliminal advertisement and what not to keep their cash registers over flowing.

The key is to be aware that this kind of filtering happens and it colours our glasses through which we see the world .

When iam in serious need to read conflicting views on a subject I just use duckduckgo.com
The search is not personalized its standard there .

Google is more personalized now and no standard which it use to be .

Even if I use android in future I will make sure that I will not be using google services more ( anyway I don't use much and if I use I don't sign in ) .

Iam waiting for ubuntu to come too to try it .

And what about Microsoft which gained 90% of market share in shortest amount of time inspite of having Mac OS an d Linux ? How come google is the only company ? .infact Microsoft charged and charges money for windows yet has highest % of market share for decades now .
its simple. it was the most pirated OS at its time and had a large number of applications, multimedia content on it which made it the default choice.

Google gives android free , and hence the high market share . And even 2000rs android phone sold in china count here . Its a different question that all phone makers other then samsung is reporting loss . Lg seem to earn a bit these days .
put the same analogy on linux and then you would be reasoning why did linux not have the largest percentage of the OS share in PCs.

it is not that simple as it is made to look

Best and funny thing is it seems google works for Microsoft . Google devlops android as a free open source project . And the more android handsets are sold the more money Microsoft makes .
its apple who showed them the way to earn money without doing any real innovation.
the fact that manufacturers cannot wait for all the litigation to clear and then sell their hardware in the US markets made them sign the agreements in the first place. because by the time litigation would clear, their hardware would have become obsolete.

they are just giving "hafta" to the "bhai" for selling in US since they were the first to patent them in US.

Was wondering how come you dint join the party [roll]. And why was it pirated ? Because to start with it was outsourced . That was the business model which was followed by Microsoft for reaching more consumer base . Since they were licensing anybody having money could pay fees use OS. and follow the standard set and make pcs . And hence there were many oem's making pcs which made the computer in general cheaper to buy then at that time relatively compared to apple .

If you know apple was the most the successful computer maker before that but apple long decided they will not outsource the OS no matter what . Hence the net result was less market share .

It is extremely simple to understand if you choose to. there were no big corporations like google back then supporting open source platform like Linux , nor the penetration of Internet was there around the world to get connected or know the latest happenings around tech world. Simply put open source was not the vogue then and could not get traction needed. Software development was too at a very nascent stage and were developed only by apple and Microsoft which were by then public limited companies with enough funds to develop softwares .

Software development needed funds and Linux on its open source model could not gain funds required to develop software at a faster speed. Nobody cared what the hell was android , till 2005 it got traction and is getting traction only because google supports its with its money as simple as that . If Linux had got a google back then it would have easily become a force to reckon with it would have saved money for oem's which they were otherwise spending buying license from Microsoft. So actually it is very simple if you read and understand how technology moved from one phase to another through plenty of sources and books available on the net.

its apple who showed them the way to earn money without doing any real innovation.
Innovation in computers is because of apple and microsoft there would have been no google if there was no Microsoft and apple in first place.

BMW and vw also pays Microsoft royalty for their patents .

the fact that manufacturers cannot wait for all the litigation to clear and then sell their hardware in the US markets made them sign the agreements in the first place. because by the time litigation would clear, their hardware would have become obsolete.
And how do you know this ? Is any paper released which confirms this ? Or this is a theory you have pulled from your hat ? Or you are working in legal department of many of the android oem's ?
they are just giving "hafta" to the "bhai" for selling in US since they were the first to patent them in US
Apple and microsoft spends millions of dollars in r&d how can they allow anybody to use their patent technology ?
And for your kind information google too does that asks royalty to use their patent tech .

Even TAI ask us to mention the source of the article which we post . [:)]

Apple and Microsoft are competitors but they have cross listening agreement between them which allows them to use each others technology respectfully and legally. And you seriously are convincing us here that giant corporations like samsung just keeps quiet because they need to push the hardware first in The market so are quietly allowing Microsoft to bully them ? And to know why and how google is losing patent war against apple and Microsoft read this

It's time Google gave up on litigation and focused on licensing based on a realistic assessment of what its own patents are worth and of how massive Android's infringement issues are.
FOSS Patents: April was disastrous for Google on the Android patent front: eight major losses, two smaller wins
