Re: Tata Vista QJD Ownership Review: Brand New Sedan Class (1,00,000Kms & 3.8Yrs)

Congratulations, Appu! 1 lakh km is really a milestone. Awesome.
Thank you HR [:)]

Dear Appu
Sorry to have a long list of queries-just reaching 74K in 6yrs with my tdi!
Service center suggested
1. Gear and clutch cable change ~5k - Seems pricey
2. Steering rack change~19K - no idea
3. Gear box repair +gear oil change ~5k - reasonable
4. Injector Nozzle and switch change ~ 10K - no idea
5. Turbo change/ service ~ 18K - reasonable
Seems staggering, but i want to keep the car for a atleast another 75k
Do these numbers seem reasonable?
thanks again
i have no idea about most of the parts mentioned above. If you want I will check with TASS and let you know. Also better to check with local mechanic, so that we can get some idea.

1L Kms Service Update :

Done 1L kms service at 1,01,800kms. Bill amount Rs.22,000 which includes Clutch full assembly change + front right drive shaft + 1L kms service + Alternator belt + power steering oil change + left door switch. Will share the breakup cost later.

Still Timing chain kit(12K) and suspension struts(8k for a pair) needs to be replaced, Will replace it during next month.

The New clutch is too too soft and Vista seems more refined than before[:D]

Congrats once again on your ride Appu!

May i know the reason for drive shaft replacement. Was that part of periodic change or did you face any issues?

That's nice share Appu, may I know the amount to be paid if I have to replace the clutch? Currently the gearshifts and clutch is hard to operate, 3rd and 5th gears aren't slotting in when we change, needs effort to push.

Have you put synthetic engine oil? What is the major change for mineral and synthetic?

Thanks God Father.

received a call from TASS saying that drive shaft needs to be replaced as it became weak.

As I like to keep my car in good condition, I asked to replace it. I think, it is not a part of periodic change and I have not noticed anything strange on Drive shaft.

sorry buddy, dont know the exact amount, but the full clutch assembly is around 8k. If it is hard, then its a time to change. 1st and reverse was hard before changing the clutch.

So far I have used Mineral oil only. Price and refinement is the major difference between Synthetic and mineral[;)]

Synthetic means, service interval will be 15k kms where as mineral is 10k kms. But TATA recommends 10K kms interval for oil change.

TRIP:

Done a round refreshing trip of around 1700kms to Kerala. Chennai - Tirukarukavur - Tiruchendur - Kanyakumari - Tiruvandrum - Kollam - Senkottai - Vellore.

After the 1L kms service engine feels more refined.
Mileage - not calculated.
Comfort level - still Best
Rattling - Nil

Pics from the recent trip:

How long do you estimate the engine life without problems-1.5-2lak Km?-ask because i have seen some going strong nearly 1.6Lkms. I would like to keep my tdi for 1.5L K if repairs dont kill me

Congrats Appu on the milestone and hats off for the enthusiast in you. Keep going strong.
Lovely pictures those. Where did you climb to, for the second last picture? Camera on a stick?

Thanks for the compliments Manoj [:)]

I have not climbed or used any stick. Just took the pic by holding the mobile in higher position[;)]

normally if there is a problem with drive shaft you get kat kat sound while turning. the way to check is drive at good speeed and comletely rotate the steering to one side and check if there is any khut khut sound if not turn the steering fully to the otherside and check if the sound is there. if yes, a drive shaft has two ends one that goes inside the gearbox another side which goes to the wheel you can check which side has these problems once you remove the drive shaft. if its gearbox side you get it seperately it called drive shaft bell, you can replace one that is gone and this ways the problem is tackled economically. there is no need for entire drive shaft change unless and until both the sides of a drive shaft is gone.

will try and find an image and explain in a better way.

Actually I have not noticed any issues with Drive shaft. As Incarnation said, I have not noticed any khut khut, but heard some kind of grinding sound when I fully turn the steering wheel to right. But I'm not sure was that problem with drive shaft or it is normal.

After replacing that, I have not noticed any such sound when turning the steering to full left/right.

normally if there is a problem with drive shaft you get kat kat sound while turning. the way to check is drive at good speeed and comletely rotate the steering to one side and check if there is any khut khut sound if not turn the steering fully to the otherside and check if the sound is there. if yes, a drive shaft has two ends one that goes inside the gearbox another side which goes to the wheel you can check which side has these problems once you remove the drive shaft. if its gearbox side you get it seperately it called drive shaft bell, you can replace one that is gone and this ways the problem is tackled economically. there is no need for entire drive shaft change unless and until both the sides of a drive shaft is gone.

@ Appu and Akmal i used to be a used car a dealer so unless an until i know the tricks of the trade, i would not be making profit isn't it. plus dad was in the trucking business we had 16 trucks so maintenance and everything was discussed so have quite some knowledge, however the subject is so vast, whatever you know isn't all, there is so much to learn. Everyday i learn something new.

This is how a front wheel drive cars drive shaft looks like. i have marked both the bells, you get these bells separately in the market, so replacing any one of them will stop the sound. now the next question would be how to determine which side is gone.

when you get the drive shafts down slightly rotate it. if it has play then that side bell is gone. hence we can determine they are gone, major things is the bearing that fails hence you get that khut khut sound.

here is a pic as to how it would look when fitted.

i hope i was successfull in explaining it, i'm a pretty bad teacher i know that as i have a kid at home.[:D]

^^ That's well explained!

Now let me tell you all the dirty tricks played in service centres.
maxresdefault.jpg
The marked portion are the 'boots' of the drive shaft which can be torn upon on ageing/ by stone piercing etc. If unnoticed or not repaired may invite dust particles inside the boot and mess up with the grease inside it and results in damage of the drive shafts. These are cheap to replace but demands on higher labour work. Hence they replace the whole assembly to get higher profit with less labour!

PS: Apologize for the repeat picture

The same thing happened with our old Santro! the boots got torn off and screwed up the entire drive shaft ! [frustration]
