Once again, Great Pictures, Appu[clap]
Each glow plug costs Rs. 750 plus labour charges. However my concern is, would there be some other issues related to functioning of engine? By the way, how does glow plug fail?

Thanks for the compliments Buddy [:)]

even for my previous black Indica DLS, I paid 750 bucks I guess.

I heard, if one is week, it will give more load on others, that will make others to fail one by one. So my local mechanic asked me to change all the glow plugs at a same time. Anyhow check with TASS about the issue. I will also check with Vellore TASS when I go there.

regarding glow plug fail on previous car:

one cold morning, car didn't started. So called local mechanic and started the car by pushing it. Later checked the battery and found Battery was fine. Then checked the glow plugs and found one was kaput. we changed all the four glow plugs.
Later we have not faced any problems with glow plugs till we sell the car.

Hi 2011_drivetech4, just 20 days ago, I had to replace the 4 spark plugs in my Vista Petrol 2009. One Friday while returning from office, my AC seemed very low, almost not working. And within few minutes the engine heat indicator was at full, and service light glowed.

Next day I went to see the service center and they replaced four glow plugs and the AC Fan. Now my VIsta (Leo) is back in business. Just a matter of 2 days when I received the car from service center. I also changed wiper blades. [:)]

Thanks

Don't worry there will not be any issue with functioning of engine.
Glow plug is a heating device used to assist cold start in diesel engines.

Glow plugs reach temperatures in the range of 500 to 600 degrees Celsius in 3 seconds.

Glow plug also assists in controlling emissions in first few minutes and helps to reduce the smoke by efficient fuel burning.

Glow plug require a few seconds to heat up and ready to assist in cranking.
After switching on (only electricals and no cranking) give a few seconds till the coil symbol in red colour vanishes and then only crank to start the engine. This should in general help the glow plug to last long.

Some possible reasons for glow plug failures are:

High voltage reaching the plug (not very common) - could be due to a faulty/loose wiring.
Glow plug not turning off due to some relay failure (not very common) - this again could be due to an electrical fault. (Glow plugs are not designed to be on constantly - with that high temperature they will fail if not turned off after the initial 3 to 4 minutes)

Excess carbon build up in the pre chambers.

Excess spray of diesel in fuel injectors - Glow plug will cool off quickly from such high temperatures due to excess diesel spray (and that is like cooling a heated glass all of a sudden)- the element will burn out.
That is if you accelerate a diesel car like a petrol one immediately after starting, glow plugs could fail. At least during a cold start, Diesel cars should be driven utilizing the torque and choosing the right gears - not plain pumping of fuel right from start. Also avoid pressing the accelerator while cranking/turning on the ignition key - that's not required in a diesel.

(Modern diesel cars are equipped with high pressure fuel injectors that injects fuel into the combustion chamber with precise measurement of quantity and at very high pressure reaching thousands of psi and during cranking this pressure and amount of diesel is very high and therefore pressing accelerator while cranking is not required and an unwanted activity which could cause troubles)

So the most likely causes for failure could be
1. not giving enough time after switch on and the ignition on and
2. Excess diesel injection (like the chamber becoming rich with fuel) as explained above.

Thank you Appu, beingamit & Autosafari for the glow plug literature[:)]. I went to TASS during the weekend. Unfortunately, TASS didn't have it in a stock. I will check with them during this week. I remember starting the engine before the glow plug indicator switching off last year. Maybe this might be the reason that glow plugs are failing one by one. After this replacement, glow plug issue should not crop up.

Congrats Appu on the milestone.[thumbsup]

As you are inching close to the 1 Lakh km mark, do you think there a need to change all the fuel lines and rubber hose pipes, as a preventive maintenance/ precaution for a total peace of mind Or just the regular 1 Lakh service as per the service manual would suffice ?

Recently my Scorp went past the 1 lakh km milestone. Since my scorp sees regular long road trips with family, I thought I should get those replaced, not yet confirmed though.

BTW, wonderful pictures as always, loved the last two .[:)]

I haven't checked the manual for 1L kms service. And I dont think that we need to change all the fuel lines and rubber hose pipes for 3.5yr old car. Anyhow I will check all the hoses/pipes and will change if it is necessary.

First thing I need to change is Clutch. nearing 92Kms with stock clutch. There is always some sort of fear/doubt/confusion regarding clutch in my mind[thinking]

Great going Appu . You might be interested in HEXA

Thank you Drivetech :)

Great, lets hope there wont be any issue regarding heater plug in future[cheers]

Well, here is an Update :

Installed New set of Shoes to Whitey. Ran 52+Kms with Continental Tyre(CEC3-Conti Eco Contact 3) .

As I'm fully satisfied with its performance, Grip, handling and reliability. gone for the same Continental again with the same size 185/65/R149(Stock 175/65/R14). But, this time CC5-Conti Comfort Contact 5.

Brought 4Tyres for 18,000 inclusive of Balancing and Alignment.

Old Tyres(52K+ kms)

Thats indeed a good mileage for a Tyre. there are some scratches on the mag i believe do a brush touch up for it the look would be more enhanced.
