Using Tiago XZ-P (Jan 2017 make) since last one month, clocked only 500kms. Below are my comments:

The good:
  • The very first thing I love about Tiago is that the car interior doesn't smell even a bit when it is kept under direct sunlight for hours. No smell from Tata Genuine seat covers either. A big thumps up [cheers]
  • The car/seat height is much higher than other Japanese/Korean cars, it gives you a great view. Also the roof height is good, easy ingress/egress. Also the under seat foot space below front seats is too good for rear passengers.
  • Maneuvering is very easy, thanks to light steering and compact dimensions. Also, Reverse sensors + good rear view mirrors = no problem in reverse parking.
  • Car's weight does not affect mileage. Long journeys on highway will surely bring smile on your face. (read fuel consumption)
  • Car may look small from the distance, sit inside and it will surprise you with space. Also the interior design and quality is very good. Specially the door grab handle location on front doors (inside), very practical.
  • Tyre width (XZ) is good, alloy design is easy to clean. Look good too.
  • Open the bonnet and you will find top notch electronics from Bosch Germany. Gives you that high quality feel.
  • Car drives like a big car, superb suspensions and handling. Very predictable on road, including braking.
  • Gear lever does NOT vibrate in any gear, idle or moving. Yes but passenger seat (if empty) vibrates a bit on idle. Doors if open, does NOT vibrate on idle (compared to Alto K10).
  • Not many knows that rear seat base also flips towards front seats to make more space for backrest fold.
  • The spare wheel is placed in such a way that air filling nozzle remains on top for easy air filling. I have seen opposite in many cars.
  • Wheel wells are having good quality cladding, gives it a very premium look.
  • Things like: ICE does not restart when cranking the engine, remove key and still power windows work, removing key unlocks all doors and turn on cabin light, putting car in reverse gear lowers music volume and graphical sensor output on ICE display, can take phone calls even when ICE is in off mode, can’t crank engine without clutch is engaged, speedometer and tachometer needles swings fully together till the end and return, ICE can be turned on without key for an hour, turn on headlights via remote.. things like these makes a lot of difference.
  • Child locks on both rear doors. Lock power windows and you have child proof rear seat. [thumbsup]
  • Headlight leveler is on right side stick, very convenient while on move.
  • ECO mode can fetch better mileage on highway at the cost of throttle response. Good for steady highway run.

The bad:
  • As everyone here knows, petrol engine is noisy. Well only when it is cold, rest of the time its fine and same as the other 3 pot engines.
  • Car is strictly for a sedate drivers (like me), those who are looking for strong pull should look elsewhere. But there is enough power to maintain average speed on highway rather than frequent acceleration and braking. Play your favorite music in Harmon ICE and enjoy your drive.
  • Car is heavy, heavy for that small engine provided. Makes car picking speed in very linear manner, though once it is beyond 60kmph it glides.
  • Road/Tyre noise creeps into cabin, also beyond 70-80kmph you can hear slight wind noise on door. All these only when ICE is off.
  • AC cooling is average I feel, I am yet to go long drive with AC on but its not bone chilling for sure.
  • Mute button on steering wheel does not pause music, just mute it.
  • There is a lag in action when you operate ICE/Calls from steering controls. I heard that Dec 2016 ICE update solves this issue but mine is on Jun 2016 firmware.
  • Gear shift is not upto the Suzuki level but fairly easy to operate. No click sound here.
  • Boot lamp is manual, it does not turn off itself on closing hatch door. (Not sure if it turns off after car is locked, not tried)
  • 5th gear is good for overdrive, say beyond 60-70kmph. But after that it glides though.

Above is my initial ownership experience. My experience with Tata showroom was good, and hoping for a great ownership experience ahead.

Overall I feel Tiago is very different from other cars, a very likeable car.

Friend took delivery of the xz model without alloy wheel. Also saw this alloy wheel at the showroom
Congrats to your friend. Did you ask the price of that alloy by any chance?

Congrats on your new ride modifii! Why not share some pics of your Tiago?

Well thought out. My portable inflator's power cable is just enough to reach the spare wheel.

Exhaustive list there [clap]. Adding my 2 cents: panic alarm in remote key, auto rear wiper when slotting reverse gear with front wiper ON.

  • Mute button on steering wheel does not pause music, just mute it.
And there is no pause button on steering wheel too.

  • Boot lamp is manual, it does not turn off itself on closing hatch door. (Not sure if it turns off after car is locked, not tried)
It turns off along with cabin lamp (around 30 seconds) after boot is closed and car not locked. On the flip side, it turns off immediately once the car is locked. I leave it always ON these days. [:D]

It's 24k for 4 which i think is expensive for 14". You can get good aftermarket alloys for less than 20k.

What's with the boot lamp ? Is there a button to operate the lamp ? I didnt see one.

Also they gave me 3 free service coupons which mentions first service at 1k kms- 1500kms , 2nd service after 1 year or 10k kms and 3rd service at 2 years or 20k kms. I thought its half yearly like you mentioned. Didnt check the manual though.

Bought the 2 years extended warranty plus p2p and received the documents on delivery.

The alloys cost around 25,650/- based on the recent chat with the accessory department.

Boot lamp - Rear right of the boot inside.

Yes, I feel TML accessories are over priced.

The switch is part of the lamp unit, horizontally placed right below the lamp.

They must have wrongly mentioned the KMs. 2nd Service at 7500km and 3rd at 15000km. Except for the first service, all others are half yearly as long as you run less than the ODO limits mentioned above.

Bought the 2 years extended warranty plus p2p and received the documents on delivery.
Smart choice. [clap]

It should be :-

First Service - 2 months or 2,500km
Second Service - 6 months or 7,500km
Third Service - 12 months or 15,000 km

First and Second service is just general checkup and wash.
In Third service engine oil is changed (your friend will have to pay for it).

@ mukesh - maybe he didnt know the exact price but still overpriced. And thanks. Will check the switch. The advisor told me since it isnt the top model maybe they skipped it. I argued that it's top but with no alloys. He said they make certain other deletions as well which i didn't believe and knew will get answer here at tai :p

@ prabhagar and gautam - will have to check the coupons once again. But i think he mentioned yearly and it seemed odd and he expalined that at 2nd service and 3rd service engine oil and filters will be changed

@modifii, nice review there. While I agree with most of your points, I disagree on some. Minor vibrations are also felt on steering wheel and driver seat and even at closed doors at idle. Also AC is very strong and should be in pros rather than cons. You might have used in very hot afternoon. During December, January I used to feel so cold and bone chilling that I had to switch it off. Even in mornings now. Never did with the Hyundais we had in the family. Also I never faced any lag in steering controls. May be fractions of a sec but can't call it a con in anyway. Also tyre noise comes in any hatchback you drive above 80. Even in our home i20 I have observed it. I never felt anything worse or concerning in this matter.

The real test of AC is in summer only, in winter AC is always chilling. In January even I found AC chilling but now under higher temperature the cooling is bit low I feel.

Thank you Prabhagar, I tested boot lamp after reading your post and found it turning off itself. Thanks for the tip.

Attaching some pictures of my car.

Nice pics. I recommend you to check AC as yesterday I drove in full hot temperature in only first level of fan and felt AC was more than adequate and even other owners in my Tiago group feel that and most of them said cooling is better than their previous cars. Check that the temperature knob is rotated full at the colder level.
