Re: The Story of Tata's Epic Journey from Trucks to Aria

So does it mean that WM government will pay TATA some money in order to acquire that land back?
I guess this mean's that the land can be utilised by Tata motor's now for any of their purposes, and the government cant object it.

Re: The Story of Tata's Epic Journey from Trucks to Aria

For second year in a row, Tata Motors retains group flagship crown

For the second year in a row, Tata Motors has emerged as the flagship of the Tata Group in terms of sales and net profit, which stands at 1,65,000 crore and 13,500 crore, respectively. With plenty of help from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Tata Motors has been able to widen the gap between itself and Tata Steel, the flagship till fiscal 2010.

TCS' top line is less than a third of Tata Motors, although its profit margins are fatter at 10,413 crore, and its market value more than three-and-a-half times that of Tata Motors. Industry experts said that Tata Motors has always been the group's jewel that is closest to chairman Ratan Tata's heart, and it's only fitting that the automotive giant is towering above the others in the year that he is slated to step down.

Over the past three years, Tata Motors' net profit (after minority interests) have surged over five-fold to 13,517 crore in fiscal 2012 from 2,571 crore in fiscal 2010. To maintain that blistering pace, JLR - which accounts for close to 90% of Tata Motors' consolidated bottomline - has revised capital expenditure in the current fiscal year to £2 billion from an earlier plan of investing £1.5 billion. Much of this investment will go into a Chinese joint venture between JLR and Chery Automobile, and in a new engine plant in Wolverhampton in the West Midlands of England.

In contrast, Tata Group's flagship till fiscal 2010, Tata Steel, has been plodding along - although sales were up 12% to 1,32,257 crore, net profit slumped to 5,390 crore from 8,983 crore. The European operations - courtesy of the acquisition of European steelmaker Corus, now rechristened Tata Steel Europe - were a drag on profit.

Margins of the world's seventh-largest steelmaker were squeezed as a result of higher raw material prices and weak demand at a time when the Eurozone is in the throes of a debt-induced crisis. So will Tata Motors sustain its lead and break away further from the rest of the pack in the years to come? Rakesh Batra, national leader, automotive, Ernst & Young said: "With the global economic outlook being subdued, growth could be slower than what it was last year. But then again, what can help sustain the growth is the company's focus on developing markets like India, South America and China."

Mahantesh Sabarad, senior vice-president for equity research at Fortune Financials, said: "Tata Motors will grow upwards of 13-15% in revenue in the next 2-3 years. The launch of the F-type Jaguar products and new geographies will help JLR drive up volumes."

This news will surely put a big smile on Xover[;)]

If there was anyone else on my place he would be grinning ear to ear after reading this info. But since I follow TATA really closely I know they are riding high on the JLR wave. But their Indian operation is suffering very badly at this point be it volumes or margines. So Am I happy on receiving this info, the answer is yes[:)]. But am I over the top with rapture on this info, well knowing the current dismal state of home operation by TATA,sadly NO.[frustration]

It is pretty evident that when one puts in his heart and soul into Anything, positive results are borne.

Seems their current focus is on recovering the initial costs input to JLR.

Ratan Tata gets Lifetime Achievement Award by Rockefeller Foundation

Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the prestigious Rockefeller Foundation here for innovation in philanthropy.

The Foundation, celebrating 100 years of global innovation, honoured individuals and institutions with its second annual Innovation Awards here yesterday.

Speaking on the occasion, Tata said businesses should be sensitive to the fact that they are making a difference in places where they operate and they have to do things to help the community prosper.

"This is all the more evident in the developing world where disparities are so huge. If the industry is not sensitive to it, they would encourage a backlash to take place and many companies that go overseas are getting to understand the need to do this and those that do not are really hurting the reputation of other industries," Tata said.

"When you see in places like Africa and parts of Asia abject poverty, hungry children and malnutrition around you, and you look at yourself as being people who have well being and comforts, I think it takes a very insensitive, tough person not to feel they need to do something," not just by providing material support but by playing a role in helping give prosperity to the community in which they belong, Tata added.

He said employees in his organisation have gained a certain spirit of being part of a community in which they operate.

"It has become the DNA of the organisation to play a role in the community," he added.
Tata gave the example of a voluntary group in his organisation in which employees get leave from their jobs to help victims of natural disasters like tsunamis and earthquakes in India.

He said Tata employees help in rebuilding and adopting villages and then return to their jobs.

Tata was honoured by the Foundation for incorporating public good into the business model of the Tata Group.

Last year's recipient of the Rockefeller Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award was former US President Bill Clinton.

Ratan Tata has always set examples for other corporate leader's to follow, it will be very sad to see him retire as he was the face of TATA company, i don't think any of his successor cant even carry half of his charisma.

Competition for Tata Motors to get more intense: Ratan Tata

Acknowledging that his firm's "predominance in commercial vehicles will be challenged" by the entry of international brands like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and Navistar, Ratan Tata, the chairman of Tata Motors, India's largest automobile firm in terms of turnover, said his company is gearing up for the battle ahead.

"A new line of very competitive, fuel-efficient vehicles is being developed by Tata Motors to meet the competition head-on," Tata wrote to shareholders in the annual report for financial year ending March 2012.

Having seen its market share falling from 64 per cent in FY-10 to 59 per cent in FY-12, Tata Motors has undertaken a slew of measures, which includes 50 new products and an investment of around Rs 1,500 crore in FY-13. On the anvil are low-priced Prima trucks and light duty Ultra range trucks. An analyst said the entry of the world's largest truck maker Daimler through Bharat Benz brand in August will pose the biggest challenge to Tata Motors. Competition will even come from the likes of Ashok Leyland, VE Commercial (Volvo Eicher truck JV), Mahindra Navistar, which are making big ticket investments to build capacities.

Umesh Karne, auto analyst with BRICS Securities, says the international competition that one is witnessing right now is more intense then what one had anticipated before. The market share for leaders will come under pressure, Karne said.

"There is no big secret but for Tata Motors to continue to build the product portfolio with specific applications and deliver value. What gives Tata Motors the edge over others is the sales and service network, which will be very tough to match in the short term by the competition," Karne added. Tata Motors posted 15 per cent growth in CV business in FY 12 to 5,30,000 units from 4,59,000 units in FY-11. The passenger car business grew slower at 4 per cent to 3,33,000 units in FY 12.

Tata says Tata Motors will face even greater competition in the passenger car segment. "The company will need to address the marketplace more effectively with its existing and future products in order to regain the level of market share that it earlier enjoyed," asserted Tata.

Reflecting on the mini car Nano, he said despite the initial roadblock, Nano would continue to grow in India and has a big potential overseas. "The potential market for such an affordable car is enormous throughout the developing world," said Tata.

While the situation back home may be tough, its luxury cars under the Jaguar Land Rover badge are gaining accolades and glory globally, with strong response to the compact SUV Evoque.

JLR, which today contributes to more than 70 per cent of Tata Motors profits, saw volumes and value growing by over 30-35 per cent in FY-12 and the company has lined up slew of new products to keep the momentum going.

Tata are currently going through a very tough patch.People have even started to speculate that they will shut stop their passenger car division once Ratan Tata exits the post of C.E.O. . But I for one know that there is no quitting in TATA Motors. They have entered this business with specific aims and by GOD sooner or later they will achieve them.
