Re: The Story of Tata's Epic Journey from Trucks to Aria

I am not very sure but I think I ve seen those kind of trucks in India.
Yes I have also seen those type of trucks where last axle have been lifted.
What you have seen is a 3 axle truck which are quite common in our highways and even in interior roads now. They are the highest capacity rigid trucks in our country (31 TON capacity) 8X2 trucks.

What Visran is mentioning is a 5 Axle rigid truck which is first in India introduced by TATA Motors.

^^Buddy I guess you mean 4 axles instead of three.

Because tri-axles are the Tata 2515 etc which are more than 10 years old now..

Vipul,

I am not sure of 2515. Assume that it was 2 Axle. It was a 6x2 type.

Now it seems replaced by 2518 (6X2) which is available in cab and cowl form which is also looking like a 2 Axle truck.

LPT3118 (8x2) is a 3 Axle truck with a lifting mechanism. What I understood is the lifted wheel set do not have a separate Axle.

3118 is also available in cab and cowl form.

There is a sensor which automatically lift these wheels while in reverse gear. Another feature of 3118 is the lifted wheels are automatically lowered while engine is switched off to prevent theft of tyres during parking. It is easy to remove tyres when they are in a lifted position.

These additional wheels are to give stability during heavy load conditions and also to be compatable with RTO rules to have a capacity of 31 Tons.

As far as I know, Ashok Leyland 3 Axles trucks do not have lift mechanism.

6X2 is for our sadharan trucks(I don't know what we call them[embarass])

There are 6X4 too available in the tippers.

Even I too used to think the same but one good day I learnt the fact.

There is a sensor which automatically lift these wheels while in reverse gear. Another feature of 3118 is the lifted wheels are automatically lowered while engine is switched off to prevent theft of tyres during parking. It is easy to remove tyres when they are in a lifted position.
[lol]The last line is mind blowing,I never knew about such wits of tata engineers!!

These additional wheels are to give stability during heavy load conditions and also to be compatable with RTO rules to have a capacity of 31 Tons.
Many times on highways you need to follow these trucks and you will find that as soon as any city or check post is near the drivers put the wheels down else they keep them lifted for whole time.Maybe they save two tyres by this way.And yes, these trucks can do 90 kph too.

As far as I know, Ashok Leyland 3 Axles trucks do not have lift mechanism.
Because AL has the front two axles which are steerable and hence it's not possible to lift them.

Jayadev,

From where ever you read that, if it was a couple of months back, then I would say its the lack of General Knowledge of that writer/blogger/columnist.

Leave alone TATA Group, just talking about only TATA Motors here.

TATA Motors has shaken the Western (industrial) world when they took over Jaguar and Land Rover.
When Nano was launched, it was another shock. Even though popular press and common men ridiculed the product initially, it has created a serious interest about TATA Motors in particular and Indian industry in general amoung the industrial community.

In 2008, when I went to France for a Seminar, most of the questions from Managers came several countries across Europe, were about TATA.

Even columnists from self centered US were suddenly respectful of India and TATA after JLR.

I remember an article in 2009 where a US analyst discussing about a possible Indian take over of Hummer. He was writing that he won't bet against TATA.

It is confirmed, this is the first truck of its kind in India. These lines are from official TATA press release:

The Tata LPT 3723 is the first 5-axle rigid truck in the country and will be the next big game changer in the Indian commercial vehicle industry. This truck can carry around 4.5 tonnes more than the existing 31 tonne MAV (Multi-axle vehicle) segment. As a result, it is all set to radically change the economics of transportation in multiple segments by reducing the cost per Tonne-Km of transportation. It is powered by a Cummins 6BT 5.9L engine (155 kW power at 2500rpm), twin steerable front axles, a twin-drive axle and a tag-lift axle: the only truck to have such a technology, reducing tyre and fuel costs. The turning circle diameter of 21.9 metres makes it more maneuverable.

I had heard that Tata manufactures trucks with Daewoo, and the some characteristics have been implemented in the Tata Prima too.

Re: The Story of Tata's Epic Journey from Trucks to Aria

On my recent visit to Korea, I saw Tata Novus trucks in good number. I mean majority of the trucks were Hyundai, followed by Tata-Daewoo ones. Tata has built a remarkable presence in world automobile field.
And Nano is being talked about around the world. One of my colleague from Poland has spotted a Tata SUV in his country. May be Aria or Safari. Tata exports to eastern Europe market too. I didn't know. TATA's journey is definitely an epic. People around the world are inquisitive to know more about TATA. Mostly relate it with Nano. When I say I also own a Tata car, first question would be " Is it a Nano?" [:)]
