ata Motors hatches Indonesia drive for cars, trucks

Tata Motors will assemble cars and trucks in Indonesia, expecting the country to be its biggest market outside India down the road.

The company has been exploring the idea of assembling the vehicles in Indonesia for over a year now.

TaMo did not share capacity and investment plans, or the exact location, but in a statement said the assembly plant will go on stream next year.

Ratan Tata, the outgoing chairman of the company, had last year hinted that TaMo will start assembling the Nano in Indonesia.

However, in its statement on Tuesday, the company did not clarify on the specific models it plans to assemble.

The multipurpose vehicle segment is the largest in Indonesia. The hatchback segment, though still very small, is growing fast and that is where we want to place our product, Biswadev Sengupta, CEO of Tata Motors for Indonesian operations, told the Jakarta Post.

Ravi Pisharody, executive director (commercial vehicles) of Tata Motors, said in a statement, “Based on customer feedback, we will progressively introduce relevant passenger and commercial vehicles, backed by appropriate distribution and service infrastructure such that we are closest to our customers.”

Indonesia is the biggest automobile market in the Asean region and the company is also evaluating options for setting up a manufacturing base in Indonesia to serve the country and the Asean region. “Significant investments will also be planned for component localisation,” the company said. Tata Motors will operate through its wholly owned Jakarta-based subsidiary, PT Tata Motors Indonesia.

The Indonesian market continues to grow at a fast pace despite a global slowdown in the automobile sales.

Car sales rose 28% to 535,048 units in the first six months of the current calendar year compared with 417,672 in first half of 2011. Indonesia’s domestic car sales rose 45% in June from a year ago to a monthly record of 101,743 cars, according to the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association.

Indonesia’s economy grew at 6.4% in the second quarter, blowing past estimates and well above 2.8% in the comparable previous quarter, primarily led by a domestic consumption story.

A celebration of expression

Art In Motion is an initiative that brings together the two most visible aspects of the Tata Nano – a true innovation and a fantastically fun car. We’ve invited some of India’s most renowned artists to come together in celebration of life, creativity and freedom. Armed with a brush, inspired by India’s colourful culture and using a Tata Nano as their canvas; each artist will create their own unique mobile mural, furthering the brand’s potential to become a personalised symbol of expression. Once painted, the colourful Tata Nano will tour the city during the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festivity, visiting pandals, popular Mumbai destinations, orphanage homes and children’s schools to spread happiness. During this peroide, fans will get an opportunity to ‘Catch the Art Nano’ on camera, and win some great prizes too.

I know South Africa is a primarily petrol market, but still I think TATA should have launched quadrajet alongwith safire, as quadrajet is not only more fuel efficient than safire its also much more fun to drive.

Anyways,I wish TATA luck on their SA endeavour.[:)]

Tata Motors bags record order of 1,314 trucks

Tata Motors has received its largest ever single order for commercial vehicles from Siddhivinayak Logistics Ltd. (SVLL), to supply 1,314 trucks to be delivered during the financial year. The order coincided with the launch of an innovative scheme by SVLL, meant for the well-being of their drivers, called 'Chalak se Malak'.

The order includes two recently launched products, the New Tata PRIMA 4923 - LX and the Tata LPT 3723, the first 5-axle rigid truck in the country.

Based in Surat, SVLL is India's largest fleet owner, with a fleet size of over 4,000 commercial vehicles. The company operates across diverse segments, like steel, cement, tractors, chemicals, machinery, and is a pioneer in new segments like commercial vehicle chassis carriers.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. R. C. Baid, Founder and Chief Mentor, Siddhivinayak Logistics Ltd said, “We have been using Tata vehicles for decades and are pleased with the quality, engagement and after-sales services. We appreciate the commitment by Tata Motors in helping us become a specialist and India’s fastest growing surface transport company. Through this order we further strengthen our relationship with Tata Motors.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Vinod Sahay, Head - Sales & Marketing, Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles, Tata Motors, said: “We are delighted that our association with M/s. SVLL continues unabated. We are honoured to receive this prestigious order and are committed to deliver these vehicles this fiscal year. We thank the company for their continued trust and patronage of our brand”.

The New Tata PRIMA 4923 - LX is from the new 230 HP range of PRIMA trucks, was launched to extend the PRIMA advantage to many more transporters who require a lower power-to-weight ratio. These vehicles are fitted with a Cummins ISBe electronic engine with common rail injection, for efficient fuel injection. This comes with India’s first indigenously developed 9-speed gearbox from Tata Motors with an overdrive function which provides superior fuel efficiency. These vehicles are also coupled with a 430 mm diameter organic clutch and 10-T rear axle to deliver a balanced and robust drive train. The Tata PRIMA LX cabin comes with an optional AC, 4 point suspension for reduced vibration and double sleeper bunks to provide maximum comfort to the driver.

The Tata LPT 3723 is the first 5-axle rigid truck in the country and will be the next big game changer in the Indian commercial vehicle industry. This truck can carry around 4.5 tonnes more than the existing 31 tonne MAV (Multi-axle vehicle) segment. As a result, it is all set to radically change the economics of transportation in multiple segments by reducing the cost per Tonne-Km of transportation. It is powered by a Cummins 6BT 5.9L engine (155 kW power at 2500rpm), twin steerable front axles, a twin-drive axle and a tag-lift axle: the only truck to have such a technology, reducing tyre and fuel costs. The turning circle diameter of 21.9 metres makes it more maneuverable.

Re: The Story of Tata's Epic Journey from Trucks to Aria

It sounds like a long trailer kind thing with two axle at front and three at rear or similar configurations

The rigid means its all fixed under sigle ladder beam without any swivels(sigh I Forgot all the terms.)
Expert correct me if i am wrong.

Re: The Story of Tata's Epic Journey from Trucks to Aria

What is the meaning of 5-axle rigid truck?? Any CV experts here??
Buddy five axle rigid truck means two axles in the front and both will be steerable and three at the rear.
Out of these three one can be lifted and dropped using a hydraulic system while other two are always in touch with the road and these two axles are the power transmitter axles too.
These pics will explain it better..

Here is an indicative image of what can be expected:
