Re: The Story of Tata's Epic Journey from Trucks to Aria

Bidding goodbye to his shareholders, Ratan Tata, the chairman of India's largest automobile company, Tata Motors, expressed disappointment at trailing Mahindra & Mahindra in the highly competitive passenger vehicle market.

Addressing shareholders for the last time at the company's annual general meeting on Friday, Tata expressed admiration for the feats of M&M, India's largest maker of utility vehicles.

"(I have) a great respect for what Mahindra & Mahindra has been able to do. I have certain degree of sadness and shame that we have let that happen. I think we have a great deal of introspection to do as to why, Mahindra should be ahead of us, then us catching up."

Mahindra and Mahindra overtook Tata Motors in the passenger vehicle market for the first time in the first quarter (April to June) of financial year 13 with sales of 61,504 units compared to sales of 60,405 units for Tata Motors. The see-saw battle saw Tata Motors again regaining its number three position in passenger vehicle sales in July 2012, but the difference between M&M and Tata Motors is just several thousand units. Maruti-Suzuki and Hyundai Motors occupy the first two slots in India's passenger vehicles market. The segment includes both cars and utility vehicles.

Speaking about future competition in the commercial vehicles segment, Tata said, the company will have to single-mindedly retain and protect its market position across all segments. "Failure to do so will see us slipping," he warned and said, "I hope the employees will rise to the occasion in spirit to meet the needs of the changing times."

On his dream project, the small car Nano, Ratan Tata said the company had achieved its goal of offering families an all-weather affordable means of transport, but added that much remained to be done.

"There is still a lot more work that needs to be done to make it successful. We have 1000 demo points. I think we have to do more to propagate Nano to get the right volumes. I would hope that we can sell at least 2,00,000 Nanos in 12 months period."

Tata said if the company is able to increase the volumes of the Nano, "then it will have the impact that it was meant to have." Referring to Jaguar Land Rover ( JLR) Tata said the company is working on an ambitious product plan which will see JLR building smaller compact cars as well as getting into segments to take on Mercedes Benz, BMW and Audi more aggressively.

"We have not had that benefit for several years, we decided that now JLR needs to build new products and get into new segments and that is what we are pursuing. It is a very ambitious task and it is really for the future health of the company," said the chairman of Tata Group, s the largest employer in UK.

Seeking the support and encouragement of the shareholders for Percy Mistry, who is slated to succeed him at the end of this year, Tata said: "I want you to extend the same sort of support and encouragement that you have given to me all these years, to Mistry as well."

He assured shareholders that Mistry's passion for automobiles equalled his. On the ailing Spanish bus subsidiary Hispano, Tata said the economic situation in Spain accounted for its troubles. "What (Hispano) was once a very premium bus company in Spain and in Europe is in (a) tough space. So we are looking at what best we can do whether we could continue or not to continue with that subsidiary."

Re: The Story of Tata's Epic Journey from Trucks to Aria

Two days after the West Bengal government moved the Supreme Court on the Singur issue, Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata today said his company will not work against anybody's interests as long as it is within laws.

The West Bengal government on August 7 moved the Supreme Court against the Calcutta High Court order, which struck down the Singur Land Act that allowed the state government to reclaim 400 acres of land given to Tata Motors.

"We will not work against anybody's interest so long as it is not against our laws," Tata said at the 67th Annual General Meeting of Tata Motors here today.

Tata Motors had acquired the Singur land from the previous Left government for its Nano project. However, it ran into troubles due to local agitation against land acquisition. When Mamata Banerjee-led TMC came to power, the land was reclaimed through the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act 2011.

Tata said the fact remains that the land has been taken for farmers to cultivate, (but) that land is no longer cultivable because it is covered and concreted.

"At the height of the Singur disagreement, we had opted to buy an equivalent land across the street and make that available to the farmers, but that proposal was rejected,"he said.

Whatever the court decides we will abide by it, he said.

This must be the first no win situation! The farmers cannot use the land and Tata in all probability wont be heading to WB in a hurry!

Tata group will not walk away from Bengal: Ratan Tata

Outgoing Chairman of Tata Sons Ratan Tata today said there is still a possibility of locating a Tata Motors factory somewhere in West Bengal, but can be done only when "there is friendliness at the political level".

He was responding to the shareholders' questions relating to the abandoned Nano car factory at Singur at the AGM of Tata Global Beverages.

Tata said: "It is something that does not bring anger to me. But there is a sense of sadness because we could not bring it here."

"The case is now sub-judice and we will honour the outcome and respect the wishes of the Bengal government. Who knows, there could be a Tata Motors factory somewhere in Bengal and hopefully we welcome that," he said.

On his involvement with Bengal, he said, "I enjoyed, in fact, a great sense of satisfaction during interaction with the shareholders. The people of Bengal are friendly and warm. I had lived for six years in Jamshedpur and often used to visit Kolkata during which time an affinity had developed. That is why we wanted to bring a car factory here.

"Only when there is friendliness at the political level, we will think of it. We are an Indian group. We have no bias and prejudice. The group will not walk away from Bengal," Tata said.

It was the last appearance of Ratan Tata as the chairman of the company at the AGM.
Describing himself as a "very emotional person", Tata said, "This is an emotional meeting for me. I will be back sitting with you in future. I will carry back the warmth and affection showed towards me and I will remember it till the end of my life."

Tata Motors had earlier planned the mother plant of its dream small car project, later named Nano, to be set up at Singur in the state.

The erstwhile Left Front government under the chief ministership of Buddhadeb Bhattacharya acquired close to 1,000 acre in 2006 under the land acquisition act of 1894 for the mother plant and the vendor park.

The then principal opposition party Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee agitated against the land allotment.

It contended that 400 acre were acquired from farmers who unwillingly parted with their land and it should be returned to them.

Banerjee had said the plant could come up on 600 acre and the vendor park could be located elsewhere near to the plant.

With none of the three parties relenting from their stands, Tata Motors finally decided to abandon the project in October 2008.

With Trinamool Congress coming to power in 2011, the state government moved the court seeking return of 400 acres to the farmers.

The case is pending with the Supreme Court.

Re: The Story of Tata's Epic Journey from Trucks to Aria

The hindu has published a good account of how TATA were able to turnaround the future of JLR:
Four years after being bought by Tata Motors , the well-known but somewhat faded British brands are regaining some of their lost lustre, racking up big sales from Shanghai to London.

The success has stunned analysts and investors, many of whom had said that Tata Motors was making an expensive mistake when it acquired Jaguar Land Rover from Ford Motor for $2.3 billion in June 2008.

At the time, Ford was raising money to ensure its own survival, and it sold the brands for several billion dollars less than it had paid to acquire it years earlier.

Analysts say Tata has done what few companies from emerging markets have been able to do turn around and successfully run a troubled Western company. Many others, including Tata Motor's sister company Tata Steel, which paid $11.3 billion for Corus Steel in 2007, have struggled with acquisitions made in Europe and the United States in the era of cheap money before the financial crisis.

Tata Motors appears to have succeeded in large part because it did not seek to run Jaguar Land Rover from their headquarters in Mumbai. Instead, it has left day-to-day management in the hands of executives in England. It also benefited from projects started under Ford ownership, including the Evoque, which has won fans.

Re: The Story of Tata's Epic Journey from Trucks to Aria

The 2012 Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) is certainly going to be a very lively exhibition as Indian auto maker Tata Motors have confirmed their participation and will showcase the global headline magnet, the Tata Nano, in their booth.

The Tata Nano’s Facebook page has so many inquiries everyday from Indonesians on its local launch date and prices. It can be ascertained that the car has huge expectations to fulfill in Indonesia.
According to reports, Tata Motors is still undecided on the location of a compact car plant to explore the demand for cheap cars in the ASEAN region. The company could either zero in on Thailand or Indonesia for the ground breaking ceremony to be held in late 2013 of a factory that produces 60,000 vehicles annually.
The IIMS runs between September 20-30, and Tata Motors will grace the show with a full range of models. Exhibits expected to mark their attendance are the Tata Prima, Tata Xenon single cabin, Tata Magic, Tata Ace and the Tata Nano.
“IIMS 2012 is the means for Tata Motors to introduce ourselves as a global automotive company that markets a variety of vehicles ranging from small passenger cars to trucks and buses that are environmentally friendly,” said Biswadev Sengupta, President Director, PT. Tata Motors Indonesia (TMI), to leading Indonesian automobile website Okezone.
Tata Motors does not attend the show with a plan to launch vehicles. The ambition in participating at IIMS is to build the brand that is Tata Motors. The company is working out strategies to establish a dealer network and when a rudimentary web of outlets are up and running, the products will begin to retail. This is expected to unfold only in early 2013, the Okezone report concludes.

Re: The Story of Tata's Epic Journey from Trucks to Aria

Tata Motors South Africa has been teasing a sedan on their official Facebook page since few days with hints like triple barrel head lamps, dual tone interiors, comfortable rear seats and so on, which directly points the finger at the Manza.
The teasers appear to attack the Toyota Etios head on.
The Tata Manza is not entirely new to the South African as it was unveiled at last year’s Johannesburg International Motor Show.
The Etios is being sold there since this May and it instantly became one of the best selling cars in South Africa. The*cumulative*sales of the Etios (both sedan and hatchback) in South Africa were 1315, 2105, 1753 and 1563 units for the months of May, June, July and August respectively, making it the third best selling car after the VW Polo variants during this period.
The South African market that is predominantly petrol oriented will have better demand for the 1.4 litre Fiat petrol engine that develops 88.7 bhp. Interestingly the 1.5 litre petrol engine that powers the Toyota Etios also churns out exactly the same amount of power.
Tata Motors SA has already established a sales and service network through which it sells its range of commercial vehicles and passenger cars like the Indica and the Vista.
With its advantage of more space and better interior, the Tata Manza has the potential to pose a serious threat to Etios and rake in some respectable export volumes. The fact that India has a long standing trade relationship with South Africa only makes it easier for Tata Motors to move in boldly.

I think Tata Manza is far better car than etios in terms of quality and ergonomics, then why is it competing against a lower segment?

They must be competing because Toyota is bigger brand that Tata motors, atleast for now.
