Ram,

Congratulations for your new Car :)

I am sure you would have reviewed everything before making this decision and trust me hearing a negative feedback at this point of time would not be pleasant, better stay away from asking further feedback ;)

In terms of checklist go to post #8 and download the PDF, print it and have it while inspection. It has more than enough point to take care of, you can even customize it to your needs.

Just a few Qs:

a) What if the salesman tries to avoid answering customer's 'request' to do a PDI?
b) Above salesman's designation - who can be more capable to co-operate with customer?
c) If customer himself/herself not allowed to do PDI at stockyard (perhaps company's policy), can customer tactically negotiate for any leverage?
d) If PDI not done by customer (at stockyard), what are 5 most critical (extremely necessary) PDI points from checklist to do at delivery day? (I think decoding VIN should be topmost priority)

Thanks friends.
Hi,

Just a few observations on your points based on my recent purchase experience:
a) sales man would always want to avoid a PDI and that is simply because it is an additional hassle for them (and another point of contact where customer can change mind[;)])
The only way out is to be stern in the request and not make it sound like a request. It is your right to inspect the vehicle and sales guys are quick to notice this if we ask it.

b) For most of the dealers they have executives over the sales persons ( sales manager, AGMs...etc.) who can be contacted if required.

c) I would personally suggest not to miss on the PDI for any leverage. A couple '000s are not worth risking the quality of car you are about to get. Moreover, for most cases no company has such strict policies(enforced) for the sales process. Most of the dealers have their leeway for the end sales process.

d) for specific case of decoding the VIN, before proceeding for registration, the least that could be done is to ask for Form 22 (not sure of number though). This document has the date of car manufacture.

Better to be strict on PDI part as part of your initial discussion only. Then SE will know you are not a non-sense customer. The dealers have no right to deny you PDI at their yard, apart from fact it might be far away and SE/representative have to accompany you for the process.

For VIN , you can check at the car, majority of them engraved at RHS B-pillar. Apart from Form 22, check the car if any documents/stickers are left out to show the date of manufacture. For my present car, I found a QC report on the glove-box on the date it left the factory.
Also check the tyres date of manufacture. It gives a fair idea when the car was manufactured.

Hi guys ,I have booked a Ford Ecosport on 28th June and have not asked for a PDI.I visited the showroom few days back to take a test drive and asked him about PDI,all I can say is he wasn't very willing for a PDI and told me that a PDI carried out once the car reaches the stockyard. Also he told us to deposit the money 7-10 days before the delivery date. After reading this article I really want to do a PDI even if it is before delivery at the showroom itself. What do you guys suggest? What's the best way to go for the PDI?Is PDI necessary considering the fact that the car will be coming straight from factory and will spend a negligible amount of time in the stockyard?
Thanks

Hi,

PDI/PRI should be must in any case and it should be done before you pay anything to the dealer (over and above the booking amount of-course). The dealer may ask you to travel to the stockyard for the PRI and that is understandable. However, do insist and ensure to do one.
Remember once you pay and get the car registered in your name, you may get it repaired but there is no going back from the car itself.

What do you do if the car is damaged on the way from the yard to the dealership?

In that case, you have an option to ask for a replacement if the damage is extensive.Always check the body lines of the car, make sure they are no signs of body repair anywhere.Check the engine bay for signs of oil leaks and also below the car.

If the damage is light scratches etc you need to point everything out before you sign and accept the car.

They will have a job sheet just like you see at a workshop and they will write what problems you see in which panels. The dealer will then get the work done at his cost at their own service center or at any other M.A.S.S. once the work is done you can assess the car before accepting it.

Usually the dealers take the car from Yard to RTO and then to showroom. I do not think if there is any major damage, they can get it registered. (Even Temp No).

For minor damage/scratches, you must also do another round of visual check up before delivery if anything looks abnormal than what seen during PDI.

What if there is damage on the way from the RTO to the dealership?

It is best to give the car a thorough once over before driving away from the dealership.

Check the exterior and and interior. If you find any sort of damage or any problem report it then and there itself.Get it rectified and then drive away.

When the cars are stored at the yard, rubber parts like wiper blades and the rubber strips on the door tend to dry out.Ask the dealer to change these.

Check the condition of the tires.Make sure they are not dry and have cracks.Check the rubber hoses.Mostly there should not be any problems, but you never know.

So, true, but the drivers who drive these new vehicles are utmost careful as any accident caused during these transfers are put as penalty to them.

All cars stored more than 6 months in yard(including 1 summer/monsoon) should have mandatory check and replace for rubber parts.
