General update - had been to Jaysingpur for 3 days (near Sangli, around 240km. from Pune) last week in my Hippo ;) While going, started at around 1am (in the night) and while returning started around 9pm, so both the journeys were at night. It was a real fun cruising at around 90-100 km/h consistently.

Faced a minor issue on Friday in Sangli. At round 5.30 in the morning, the moment I switched on the fog lights the engine stopped and there was no response to the ignition. All lights were functioning but the ignition did not respond. After around an hour managed to find the root cause - the ignition switch fuse (10A) was blown, probably due to some short circuit in the fog lamps wiring. Replaced it and the vehicle started immediately. Need to get this checked.

The right headlight bulb also seems to be blown out, both the filaments. Any suggestions on replacing headlight bulbs with some high power ones?

Hi,

Have been reading through your thread and finished all 10 pages. Hence, thought of writing to you guys as I see the group really trust worthy.

I am currently in Dubai and am planning to come to India for a month long holiday. I have been driving in India for the last 18 years but never owned one, always relied on rental cars. I am a fan of SUVs especially Safari and Innova. I am a driving freak and normally cover over 3k kms in a span of 4-5 days. Mostly from Trivandrum to Bangalore (my wife is a bangalorean) and then to South India trip, mostly rural areas. Now I am thinking of buying a car now and definitely it got to be Safari itself.

I need your help in making a decision now. Got an offer of a 2006 3.0L VX which has done 70K kms and is well maintained according to the seller (gotta check this). The quoted price is 4.9 Lacs. Would you all please help me with some buying tips before I view this. Also, please note that I would use this car only twice or thrice in a year which I am sure would cover minimum 10K km. But I have a friend of mine who would start it atleast once a week? How should I safeguard the engine when it is always on car shed?

I would really appreciate your reply on this. Thanks very much.

For 5 Lacs you would get a 2008-09 VX Safari. The price quoted for the 2006 model is too much. For the kind of mileage ou have mentioned it would be expensive owing a Safari. A vehicle not in use for months has its own share of problems.

I agree with mercedised. I do not see any point in spending that much money on a 6 year old vehicle with a discontinued engine. A 6 year old Safari is bound to have its own share of problems and going by your requirement of covering as much as 3000 kms within a week, I would suggest looking for something that would be a bit more reliable. Moreover, a car that will keep standing for maximum time may get afflicted with some ailments- rats might chew up wiring, seals might harden and crack, battery might conk off, engine/fuel lines may accumulate sludge, etc.

Please open a separate thread for your query. That way you shall have several other forum members helping you with their knowledge and experiences. We have members like mastersquall, mercedised and a few others who own/have owned a 3.0 Safari and their opinion would prove helpful indeed.

All the best and welcome to TAI!

Sorry to check this so late. Considering your requirement I would suggest you to rent a Safari to enjoy the driving instead of buying one and keeping it idle for such a long time. Now a days there are so many options available - you may just rent a desired vehicle without a driver, enjoy your trips and return the vehicle. You don't need to worry about maintenance, etc.

Still, its your choice :)

Guys, a simple question .. while in neutral and in a standstill position, I revved the engine and the RPM never crossed 3000 RPM. The accelerator did not respond once the needle touched 3K rpm. Is this normal or is there any locking in place?

That's the ECU limiting the max rpm while the engine is idling. Its a feature to avoid over revving the engine while it is idling. Nothing to worry.

p.s.: I have never seen your posts in any other thread. Please contribute to other threads too. Just a point.

A weird issue ... the RPM increases when I press clutch to change the gear (I am also braking at the same time.) This normally happens when I want to slow down and shift to lower gears. The interesting part is that I don't see this issue when I am not applying brakes (as during up-shifting.) I suspect that somehow the brake pedal is touching(?) the accelerator sensor - is this possible?

Also, is synthetic engine oil preferred over mineral engine oil? Will it help in engine noise reduction, better lubrication, etc.?

Thanks

My Carnation experience. Went there (Carnation, Tathawade, Pune) on Saturday (15th Dec) with prior appointment for fitting auxillary lights. Reached there at around 1.30pm, was told to wait in the lounge as it was a lunch time. Waited there for more than an hour and finally at 2.45 was called to meet the advisor. Told him that I have brought lights with me and I just want them to be fixed on the vehicle. And the reply was that we do not fit lights, you can get this done from some other garage.

Frustrated, had no option but to leave thinking why this was not told to me earlier when I took the appointment !

The TASC does'nt do aftermarket fittings, it is a different matter if you have good relations with service advisors. BTW, did you get the water issue sorted out?
