Re: Restoration of Maruti 800 1991 (Tonnes of Pics Uploaded)

Swift Shashi: I have a type1 800 so no idea about how to replace in type 2. However in type1 you can replace HL bulbs without having to remove battery or anything else on either side.

Raman:
It is not a hole/small crack, it is more like a weakened spot on the surface of the tank. So when I wipe the leaking petrol, no big drops are formed, but within seconds the area gets wet with petrol again.

Satish:
The car is 21yrs old and I dont think its worth repairing such an old petrol tank, repair will cost about 200rupees atleast, used tank is about 500 - 700 max, so I opted for the latter.

OK, I dint know that this is only for heat, thanks for sharing the right info, because the guy at the shop mentioned that its for sound absorption etc.
It is for sound absorption too. So basically cuts out heat and sound. Don't know why they called it Heatlon instead of Soundlon or HeatSoundlon etc.

Can this also be pasted to the floor on the underside to avoid the heat from the exhaust pipe?
It can only be used inside the car and inside the bonnet.

I guess the type 2 tank looks different due to suspension setup.

You could paint the tank.

Good going Anand !

Make sure you use any insulation material (like those found on the electrical wires) to protect these flexible pipes from rats.

I guess the part shown in the pic (carb) is available at MGP or try at Manu at JC road.

BTW why does the carb has 2 butterfly valves, in my 800 there is a single one.

Varun:
I got to know from Wikipedia and Jarpickle that M800 Carburator is a double barrel Carb. So there would be two butterflies. The first butterfly (small one) works whenever you use the throttle pedal, the secondary butterfly opens only when engine is in high RPM for quite sometime. A clever piece of engineering indeed. The secondary butterfly is vaccuum actuated and the bell shaped thing in the carb is the one which opens the secondary butterfly. The mechanical connections are such that the secondary one will not open unless the primary is atleast 80% (min) open.

I had painted the tank and forgot to upload the pics.

Today after thinking a lot and having a few discussions with friends and my trusted Auto Parts shop, I skipped the idea of buying a throttle body for the existing carb and instead bought a brand new UCAL Carburator (non AC) from J.K.Automobiles. Brought it back home and fixed it to the inlet manifold and poured about half a tumbler of Petrol in the smaller barrel and cranked a few times, hurray perfect idling, took it for a test drive and topped up the tank with 500rupees petrol.

It was a tough decision to take as month end is approaching and I am already cash strapped, but then I am addicted to spares, bills, car, thinner and credit card [frustration]

The minute I saw the new carb, I was drooling looking at the super clean aluminium alloy colour :stupid:

Cost of Carburator: 4.2K

I was fed up of answering everyone that the car has a new heart but wont run, finally I am at peace :D

Still these things are pending -
Gear Lever and Oil replacement
Document transfer
Insurance renewal
Emission/ PUC
Moulded roof
Wiring issues to be sorted out for Fuel indicator, fender buzzers etc
wheel alignment

Zen brake booster mod fit (last thing to do) - I am already skeptical about the chassy strength in this car. I doubt if the car would last for next 5years without major chassy work like Apron etc. Hence priority is to sort out only major issues and get FC, document transfer done.

Things that will never be done to this car
1. Strut Braces
2. Alloys
3. ICE
4. fancy wiper blades
5. Repainting the car

I have done the mistake of spending too much on a car and not using it at all, so this time some looong drives are in the pipeline, if I do manage to save some money, yes a 4digit trip is likely to be done in the coming months. Fingers crossed.

For now the carb pics

The new carb looks cool. Why not change the fuel line pipe too I can see it has some small cracks.

How was the test drive.

Crack? Where did you see it? please let me know ASAP because I don't want to lose another 5+litres petrol leaking here and there.

The carb is good, idling was a bit less so increased it for time being, accelerates well till 60, after that car is slower than before, may be A/F ratio needs to be adjusted for better pick up.

The gear lever is the only pain as of now, No time to buy or fix it. Will have to do it in the next weekend. Car is drivable now and I am really happy about it.

It is only when you own cars like the M800/Zen etc that you start appreciating every small thing in a car like idling, I waited for proper idling for the last 3+months! You can understand how it feels now.

The indicators seem to have some issue on one side and also the relay is not fixed tightly in the fuse box. Needs some more hours to perfect it.

Painted the grill to glossy black this morning. Planning to wipe off the paint on the logo so that chrome shines. What Say?

Anand, why are you screwing around with the carb settings that too on a factory set brand new carb?

Don't touch the idle rpm and idle mixture screw until you get a reading done from a PUC center.

If you want to increase the rpm you can tune the throttle cable.Don't screw with a new carbs screws man.It will be a pain to reset them again.
