Dear ss80

idling issue may be due to jets, fuel pump,
fuel filter also spark plugs.
i suggest first change jets and then check fuel pump diaphragm [glasses]

AFAIK the 118NE does not use the same carb as the M800, although a lot of people have been known to use the latter since the stock NE carbs are hard to come by.

The M800 carb would starve the NE engine at higher speeds.
Hi Jarpickle, Until the early 90s NEs came with imported Hitachi carburetor. In order to cut down cost and to solve a notorious air lock problem Premier had shifted to Mikuni. The carburetor looks the same, but with larger venturis and jets like in an Esteem. So this answers for your doubt about fuel starvation. Mine has the Mikuni carburetor only, which makes it easier for finding parts for it (though I haven't cared to clean it in the past 20000 kms :) ). Still starts in 1 or 2 cranks even if I leave the car for a month or so.
Ilangop & Jarpickle:
Thanks a lot for the information. I did check the connector to the solenoid, it has 12.58V when key is in ignition slot and there is a mild click sound when key is put to the ignition slot. Here is a pic of the same. The click sound is loud when I gave the solenoid a direct 12V connection from the battery, however still the car does not idle.
SS80, I am wondering why the solenoid should click louder if powered directly from the battery. Did u try to run start & idle your car with solenoid powered directly from battery?
Did you try to adjust the idle screw (The biggest screw in the carburetor, u can turn it by hand, no need for a tool) and increase the throttle opening?
Also check the vacuum lines to distributor and see if there is any play in the rotor of distributor.

It is possible that it is an Esteem or atleast a zen's and not an M800 carb.

All these three carbs will look the same and they are made by Mikuni.

Anand any updates?

I tried that as well, no improvement at all.

Did you try to adjust the idle screw (The biggest screw in the carburetor, u can turn it by hand, no need for a tool) and increase the throttle opening?

This is what I have done as of now, idling has improved by a small margin, tried different positions for the screw, still nothing seems to work.

Also check the vacuum lines to distributor and see if there is any play in the rotor of distributor.

I really dont know where the vacuum line is located, so if you can upload any pic it will be really helpful.

The black rotating part seems to be alright inside the distributor.

I just got the linkage length adjusted for the gear lever, now the rock hard gears became much more harder! [frustration] Short shifter has become a hard shifter.

If the bushes are new they the shifting will be a bit hard for some time.

Keith the bushes are the same old ones, not new ones. However this gearbox which I sourced was hard even before the shortening idea was executed. Only option I guess is to reduce the length below the ball (by few mm) and raise the gear knob mounting point by 3 inches!

If the gearbox was hard then you need to change the gear oil.Use EP 90 and see how it behaves.

Anand,

Somehow I missed this thread. Just today I found it.

And am still in 3rd page only. But I could n't resist myself so am posting this separately.

If you are in chennai or if am there in bangalore i am sure I would have joined you just simply for the pleasure of doing such nice job. I can not invest money like you did for both buying such a car and starting a wonderful restoration along with spending money on new spares etc. But I would like to work and do a complete restoration.

Great Anand. I love to see the improvements and one day would like to see this car in real flesh after you complete all restoration.

I would love to join if someone is doing this kind of restoration. Simply physical and moral support.

Sethu:

Thanks a lot Sir, I too am eagerly waiting for good days to come by so that I can fix the car inside out and drive it at least once a week.

Since the day I got the new engine, I have driven about 50kms only till date. About 3 weeks back I just disconnected battery then washed, waxed and put the car cover. It sits there waiting for some good times, just like me. I am in a new BPO job now, I stay for about 14hrs outside home, so no time to do anything to my car. Whole weekdays are lost, weekends are occupied by small painting jobs. Plenty of mud etc is covered around wheels already, tyres are half deflated.

Today just started the car and was shocked to see the no:of scratches in the car by the street dogs, also a new oil leak.

Varun:
Yeah you are right about the idle issue, I removed the air filter and started the car, if I partially close the air inlet hole (on carb) idling is almost normal. The moment I remove my hand, engine vibrates and switches off.

Re: Restoration of Maruti 800 1991 (Tonnes of Pics Uploaded)

Started off my new year with half a day of J.C.Road shopping for my car and tools. I wanted to buy the bottle jack, but I doubt if that it would be too big to get below the car in case of a puncture, also I am planning buy a few axle stands next month.

Since I do a few wheel rim and wheel cap paintings in the weekends sometimes, so I prefer a bigger jack easy to use and also to suit different cars (sedans and hatches). Also bought a Taparia wheel spanner (plus type) this should be enough to unbolt atleast a dozen different car wheels.

Foam sheet - 8mm for firewall insulation
Fuel filter - to be relocated to the engine bay
grommet/ rubber covers for holes in floor etc
New door pads - type1
Art Leather 4 meters - black with grains type texture (simple one)
Speedometer cable

A few pics of the same
