Re: Fuel Efficiency Figures of Your Cars

If you want the exact run in period you should contact the manufacturer. Most cars, diesel and petrol alike need to be run in for 1000-2000kms.

Why do you want to go for synthetic?Do you do 100kms per day?If yes, then switch to synthetic.

If not stay with mineral oil.Change every 5000kms.
My daily run varies from 40-60kms and i am sticking to mineral oil as you have suggested

Thanks Jarpickle.

Also I have checked air pressure on all four tires now. Maruthi says to fill front tires with 36 psi and rears with 33 psi. Stick to manufacturer recommendations as i didn't do initially and it affected the FE and ride. Now everything is fine[:)]

Stay with the oil grade the manufacturer has suggested.Change every 5000kms/ 1 year instead of the extended period as in the manual.

The only think you should look out for is oil consumption.Your manual should have exactly how much oil the car will consume.Make sure your car doesn't exceed that level.

Does high FE always mean an engine working efficiently?

One of the indicators is good FE, but you still need to keep an eye on oil consumption.

If you want to reduce engine sound, go for a higher viscosity oil as mentioned in your manual.
Hi jarpickle, i was just going through the discussion on mineral and synthetic engine oil. I am due to get my Swift VDi for 4th paid service and want to get a synthetic oil and planning for Mobil Delvac 1. Can you throw some light on the engine sound as you mentioned.

When you run you're engine to a certain amount of kms, it starts leaking oil and sounds rough. This means the oil is too thin and the engine has some amount of wear. The best way to fix this is to do an engine rebuild, but that is an expensive job.

The next best thing is to change the oil to a thicker grade.

This is good where the climate is warm, in colder climates the thick oil will freeze and the engine will endure more wear.In such cases you have to go for an engine rebuild.

All good points. I would like to add that do not rebuild an engine only for the reason of being able to use synthetic oil. If an engine works well with mineral oil stick with it - don't even think about rebuilding the engine.

thanks for the input. I had my 3rd paid service in Gurgaon and was advised by the SA to change to Synthetic and it was done at 18k. I checked on the make of oil that was changed to but it just says Synthetic Engine Oil. The car seems to run smooth for some time and with low noise. Now that the car is running on Synthetic i thought why not continue with it .. as Synthetic is better at any given time.. but this time i wanted that either i know what Oil that goes in or i Choose my own brand and give it to MASS. But am not sure if they would do so. Have an extended warranty till Jan 2014. Just few months away. I am planning to get my car serviced next month. But when checked on MASS they seem always flooded and don't know if they will give the care i need and would give a fair and honest reply for my issues.
Bosch car care & mytvs ( whitefield ) are close by planning to get an honest opinion form them. Any suggestion

MASS will not use the oil that you supply. But no harm trying.

Synthetic makes sense if you run your car a lot and on a daily basis.Any oil you get, try to maintain the grade as specified in your owners manual.

Till your extended warranty expires stay with M.A.S.S then you can shift to Bosch car car or mytvs.Maintain the bills for all the services that you have done with M.A.S.S, this comes in handy in case of a warranty claim.

None taken Buddy. I have seen people changing to Synthetic once they have completed running-in period. But i am confused on this.[confused]

I think you stick to Maruti recommended oil grades only. In case of TATA recommended in synthetic or semi-synthetic only.

Re: Fuel Efficiency Figures of Your Cars

I know this because I changed the oil at 1000kms. **** Mobil 1.They won't use any oil and you cannot provide oil of your choice.Even if they do, they don't endorse the oil change in the records. In case of warranty you get screwed.
