Re: My Hyundai Grand i10 Asta (O) Petrol. 1000Kms & Banged (Details on Page 5)

Friends... As we know lots of people in the past had complained about the poor FE of 1.2 Kappa 2 engine which was doing duty on old i10. As the same engine is being offered in grand as well, ppl have their reservations about the FE of its petrol variant. i10 has shown most drastic FE figures over the period among all other cars in the market. Users have reported as low as 7 kmpl [frustration] to as high as 14 kmpl in city driving conditions.
I browsed through various blogs, sites and forums and finally found out that Kappa2 can give better mileage if driven religiously i.e. keeping key driving habits in mind. It does not tolerate slightest of abuse and reflects immediately on FE. If driven properly it can give good 14 KMPL in normal city conditions and 12 KMPL even in bumper to bumper traffic. It has even given 19-20 KMPL on highway for few users continuously. [clap]
What are your opinions on it?

Thumbs up to your observations. Yesterday night I read this ownership review in team bhp where a member has claimed 14-15 km/l for his petrol grand i10! The member appeared to be knowing what he was writing. Although there were others who were surprised with such figures. When you say 'driven religiously' what are the techniques that are being referred to? Upshifting early? Do you think following the MID suggestions for the correct gear will help? I seriously hope it will give atleast 12km/l[confused]. Perhaps Partha can tell us more on what to expect from the grand

I too have my fingers crossed on FE buddy, but dont worry , i communicated to one petrol grand i10 owner on cardekho.com who is just learning to drive. he told me he is getting 11 kmpl in delhi traffic with tank ful to tank ful method. If he can get 11, one who has been driving for quite some time can easily fetch over 12 I feel, which is decent for a 1200 cc engine in city traffic conditions.
One of the i10 owner had advised following technique for max mileage from kappa 2 engine:
1. Shift between 1500-2000 RPM.
2. Avoid riding the clutch.
3. Dont over use breaks rather downshift for slowing down in traffic.
4. Minimize clutch uses (that comes with time though).
5. Switch off the engine when idle time is more than 45 seconds.
6. Maintain a constant speed of 70-90 on highways (as per him kappa 2 hits sweet spot in this range)
7. Get rid of access weight in your car.
8. If not necessary dont go beyond 120 Km/hr as this consumes fuel like anything.

These were few points. Parth can throw some light on this as he has been driving grand for quite some time.

Good discussion guys. I need some inputs on the same topic as well. Many current i10 owners are giving different FE figures. Probably we should start a different thread for getting the FE data from the current grand i10 and old i10 owners and their specific driving style.

I have been mostly driving on highways and twice I checked FE by fuel indicator method it was about 15.5 and 16.
-Yes Grand hits its sweet spot between 2000 to 2500 RPM.
Shift to 5th gear around 2000RPM and one can reach to 120 with such ease that I have to make efforts to keep speed at 80KMPH.

-We have to also consider an importan factor in addition to above, tyre pressure
Grand service manual says Keep 33 in all 4 tyres for medium weight and for fully loaded car 33 in front tyres and 35 in rear tyres.

Hey Venky, lets not confuse ourselves with the I10 figures, Let's focus only on grand as both vehicles are entirely different, even different wheel sizes so IMO no point in comparing with i10.

But nice discussion guys, keep it on. Also lets share our small findings and experiances about our beloved GRAND[:D]

FE maniacs [:D] suggest 2 psi more than what a vehicle manual suggests. It will make the ride a little bumpy but you can observe a good 1.0 KMPL increase in FE as per them.

Also filling nitrogen helps in increase in FE indirectly as tire can retain the pressure for longer time so even if you forget to refill.. it wont reflect on FE.

I agree. But my point is, since both the i10 and Grand share the same engine (Petrol) and Grand having some additional weight to it, what I expect is that the FE will go down from old i10 to Grand for a same driver unless Grand has some extra parameters which would contribute more to the FE.

Let me know if my assumption is wrong here.

So we should increase 2 psi on all 4 tyres or only the back tyres?

@parth,how do you rate the speakers in the grand?are they ok?what about base, when you play a CD? The speakers appear to be a bit puny.
Hi Lawyeronwheelz, I have mostly been playing through USB.
Volume wise i feel its not weak, at 50% of Audio volume its quite loud.
I feel the quality is average, may be we need to workout some aftermarket solution on this. Planning to start reasearch once I am done with seat covers etc.

Did you try with the music player settings? I am ye to do that.

I am not sure why most of the cars do not have proper stock speakers with good sound quality.
Do keep us updated on your research.
