Re: My Hyundai Grand i10 Asta (O) Petrol Ownership Review
I have few queries with regard to driving Grand and newbie questions with regard to driving :
1) The clutch needs to depressed more than 75 % ( Unlike other cars ), to have a smoother gearshift. If it is depressed fully, then the gear shift is very smooth. Is it normal ?
2) Do we need to travel the toe along with the clutch while releasing from 2nd gear onwards or just take the toe immediately off the clutch as soon as we engage the gear ?
3) The gear shift indicator is useful and I found the indication as follows :
0 - 10 - First Gear
10 - 25 Second Gear
25 - 40 Third Gear
40 - 60 - Fourth Gear...
> 60 Fifth Gear
I have gone to fifth gear only twice as most of my driving will be in bumper to bumper traffic. But even at speeds above 50 to 60, there is no indication to shift to 5. Is it good to drive in fourth gear itself > 50 ? I do find engine to be very smooth and have no complaints. When I engage fifth gear immediately at 50, there is not much acceleration and it lags. But the same cannot be observed in fourth gear. If I accelerate >60 , engaging fifth gear, acceleration in smooth . But I need to know as in what speeds do I need to shift for fifth ?
4) How to drive in speed breakers ? For some speed breakers ( I predict in advance ), travel in 2nd close to speed breaker, while uphill release the acceleration and brake, downshift to one and decline. During this process, I hold the clutch fully depressed. Is it correct way of doing ?
For properly laid speed breakers, I travel in 2nd and for worst speed breakers, I travel in first ( sometimes I fear of engine stalling in worst speed breakers ). Please suggest the correct method.
5) As I am a newbie in driving, I drove 200 kms as of now and I find gear shift in Grand i10 to be bit hard. Initial kms, it was very smooth. Has it become hard because of my driving ?If so, what needs to be done ?
6) Sometimes, I couldn't figure out the position of steering wheel as whether they turned it to the straight wheels or not ? How to find it during the movement of the vehicle ? Obviously, if it is steering right or left, I can adjust but I need to predict exactly that I have turned to straight wheels. How to do this ?
7) What would be the tire pressure for Grand i10 ? Manual recommends to have 33 psi for Normal load and 36 psi for maximum load. For the 80 % of the driving, I drive with 4 people. Is it considered to be normal load or maximum load and what tire pressure do I need to keep for my requirements ?
8) Do I hold the clutch at signals stop - sometimes vehicle roll back even in flat surface when stopping at signals. As I am in first gear, fully depressing the clutch and brake. Will it wear out the clutch sooner ?
9) I rarely slip the clutch from 5 to 2 instead of 4 and 3 to neutral while shifting to 2 and not engaging reverse gear properly. How to avoid this slippage ?
10) Headlights are less powerful in Grandi10 and I do not want to travel with high beams. What upgrade is recommended and will it drain the battery / void warranty ?
11 ) Grandi10 horns are totally useless and what horns are recommended ? I want to do it with authorised service centers only on the safer side. They suggested me the Bosch dual horn without the relay but I prefer relay irrespective of any horn. Please do suggest the model and I don't mind spending extra rupees for relay. Will this setup harm Airbags ? Also the horn is very tight to press. Is it normal ?
12 ) I am keeping my toe above the clutch during driving without pressing it and just touching it. I heard that in Grandi10 that if I do like this, the clutch will wear out and same won't happen in Swift. I don't mean clutch riding here. I feel comfortable in keeping my toe above the clutch without pressing it as it helps a lot in Bangalore traffic. Is it right ?
Sorry for the lengthy post and noob questions about driving / grandi10. I am a newbie to driving and also to cars. I love my car a lot and want to learn / correct my mistakes if I am doing wrong.
Thanks
1) Make a habit of depressing clutch fully while changing gears. Usage of half clutch is not at all recommended.
2) Always release clutch smoothly with your toe travelling along with clutch, for greater gears like 3, 4 and 5 somewhat faster release of clutch is ok, but always release smoothly for lower gears like 1, 2, 3 and reverse.
3) Change to 5th only when you are going above 60KmpH, if in doubt always change gears based on RPM. You can always shift into 2nd as soon as your car starts from stationery position and also let me tell you that you can crawl for speed less than 5Kmph in 2nd gear. Do try it.
4) For very large speed brakers which may result into under body scarp, you may change to 2nd and negotiate it. But for normal one even 3rd gear will also negotiate with it, just you need to feather brake before speed breaker and feather accelerator when you are on speed braker
5) 1st, 2nd, 5th and Reverse need somewhat more efforts than 3rd and 4th. That’s mechanical limitation and is nothing to do with specific car.
6) While moving always see where your car goes instead of glancing at steering wheel. Secondly, the steering comes back to straight position as soon as you release your hands.
But, while in stationary it is difficult to predict as steering won’t come back automatically to straight position, try revolving it back and feel the pressure on your palms, at one point of time the pressure will be less which means your front wheels are straight.
7) Make it 33psi normally and move to 36psi only when your car is loaded to brim
8) While stopping in traffic and signal simply put car in neutral, in slow moving traffic always engage first gear to start off, release clutch upto biting point and hold it there, now release brake as per the safe distance ahead of you and control your car with brakes. Don’t do this for very long else your clutch will wear out soon.
9) Get proper hands on gear shifting which will make this problem solve
10) This is true, headlights are weak in Grand i10. You need to upgrade it
11) This is true as well. You need to upgrade it
12) Keeping the toe won’t harm the clutch, but unintentionally putting pressure on it will be like riding a half clutch which may wear it very soon. As you said it helps you in traffic which means you are pressing it to some extent and riding a half clutch.
Hope I have tried to answer your queries, experts may throw more light on this.
