Well reaction has some action and vice-versa, A- star did picked up initially being a Maruti Avtar, but did the car offered anything more than others? Only good thing about car is M & MASS. An average Joe goes to Maruti looking for value- see an A -Star, ask for price and thinks-
Did it give me more space? why not a Wagon R!
Did it give me power, ride and style? Why not Swift!
Did it give me VFM, is it cheap? Why not Alto
I want something cute, reliable and distinct, hmmm car looks sharper, Lets go for A Star.
How many of us feel like that??? numbers do tell you a story. It has never put charts on fire which is expected from Maruti.
A* is a flop as far as Maruti is concerned. imagine if this would have been produced by FIAT or Ford, it would have been a disaster. It is Maruti, which can even survive selling cars without engine for some time
Verito has decent competitors in Indigo, Dzire, IKON. For a car which looks cheap start from the outset I must say Mahindra, along with buyers have done a great job.
Other worthy fails are
Yeti, Great product if you can live with looks, SUV that does not intimidate but gets the job done.
Suzuki Grand Vitara- Diesel and seating capacity?
Mitsubishi- Outdated, razor thin network, who would put hard earned money when everybody else is not.
Linea- I feel sad when see the sales numbers. Car deserves better. No doubts that it has got worthy competitors in SX4,City, Verna and now Vento. Seriously doubts FIAT's commitment towards Indian market, or they are busy selling Engines??
Should have begin with bringing in some credibility to the brand. You know customers in 8-10 lac cannot take risk, I would say most of them are upper middle class and would not take a risk. Story could be different if they would have started with a small hatch, fair to say FIAT does not come with a H band.
