Ford never said Ecosport to be a comple SUV. They says it to be a 'Urban SUV'. We know that its going to create a new segment namely Compact SUV segment. The people who are going to buy it won't be those who want it to do off- roading.
They might be the group of people who wants an SUV but doesn't want them to be too big. People who wants high seating position, good ground clearance and fatter tires to encounter the potholes of the city roads with ease would opt for the Fords little champion if prices go the fair way.
I do not find any reason or sense in comparing it with the fully capable SUVs like Ranger Rover or Land Cruiser or a pajero as you said. I don't even think that the people who are looking for Safari LX or Scorpio base model (I assume the person to be looking for a rugged SUV) would be satisfied with Ecosport.
Ecosport will have its own audience which would probably be the customers who opt for fully loaded premium hatches and entry level sedans(if prices go the VFM way).
