Hit by a month-long lockout at its Manesar plant due to violence, the country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India on Saturday reported 40.8 per cent decline in total sales for August at 54,154 units as against 91,442 units in the same month last year.

Domestic sales during the month stood at 50,129 units, compared to 77,086 units in August last year, down 35 per cent, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said.

Hampered by the production constraints, sales of its popular compact sedan Dzire was down by 60.7 per cent to 3,085 units during the month.

The company's other best selling model Swift, along with Estilo and Ritz, together clocked 6,059 units in August this year, down 62.2 per cent from last year.

Sales of small cars, including the M800, Alto, A-Star and Wagon R, declined by 41.2 per cent to 22,062 units.

During the month, sales of mid-sized sedan SX4 fell by 76.4 per cent to just 447 units, MSI said, adding there was no sale of the luxury sedan Kizashi during the period.

Exports during the month stood at 4,025 units as compared to 14,356 in August last year, down 72 per cent.

The company had lifted a month-long lockout at its Manesar plant on August 21. The plant was closed following violence and arson on July 18 in which a senior company official was killed and 100 others injured.

Car-maker Ford India today posted a 16.1% increase in total sales at 10,352 units in August this year.

The company had sold 8,916 units in the same month last year, Ford India said in a statement.

Ford's domestic sales went up by 6.2% to 7,840 units in the month from 7,382 units in August 2011, it added.

Exports during the month stood at 2,512 units as compared to 1,534 units in August last year, up 63%.

Commenting on the sales performance, Ford India President and Managing Director, Michael Boneham said: "It's wonderful to see consumer sentiment improving as we approach the festive season, and we are confident we are ready to meet the growing demand for cars during this period".

While market conditions have been challenging in recent months because of rising petrol prices, high inflation and rising interest rates, Ford remains focused on delivering its 'One Ford' plan to produce fuel-efficient, safe, and fun to drive vehicles which customers want and need, he added.

In the domestic market, the company recorded sales of 28,257 units compared to 26,677 units in the year-ago period, registering a growth of 5.9%.

Exports of the company declined by 23.4% to 18,629 units during the month under review from 24,335 units in the same period last year, the statement said.

"The overall market demand is suppressed due to general inflationary trend, high fuel prices and interest rates. Unless any major triggers get activated, market sentiment is not expected to improve very much," HMIL Vice-President (National Sales) Rakesh Srivastava said.

On the domestic front, despite a sluggish market, sales have grown due to increased preference for diesel vehicles and niche consumer focused promotions, he added.

The launch of new Elantra also enhanced and strengthened the sales performance in premium segment, Srivastava said.

In the A2 segment (Eon, Santro, i10 and i20), the company sold 40,049 units, in August while sales in the A3 segment (Accent and Verna) stood at 6145 units.

Sales of A4 segment (Elantra) was at 608 units. The company sold 65 units of the new sports utility vehicle Santa Fe during the month. Sales of luxury sedan Sonata stood at 19 units.

In today's scenario it's still commendable that Honda manages to sell 2536 units of its petrol cars .

It indeed is very commendable, where as Fiat with 2 models with a very popular Diesel Engine in its armoury cant even manage half of Honda's sales
