The time depends on the amount you need to spray and where it is sprayed. If its interior you might need more time than it it is exterior.

There is a possibility if it were out in the sun that the roof might absorb the smell.

You can cover the holes in the roof by using push button clips.

I am worried if drilling will reduce the strength of my aging car
Holes will not compromise the structural integrity, you can go ahead and drill holes, push button clips also can be a good alternative .Driver side will have the push buttons instead of the handle on the roof (at least thats the case in the Esteem) should check on the M800's

The driver side doesn't get a handle.Cause both hands are on the steering wheel. So push buttons clips would be perfect there.Do not drill holes if it isn't needed.

More than structural integrity I would be more worried about leakage problems.

Thanks for all your valuable inputs. I finally did the painful drilling in my car (3 at the end of the roof, 2 each side to the corners of Rear quarter panel, 2 just above driver door)

I have fixed the pressing type buttons that came with the roof & they are holding it pretty well. I will post pics of this in a day or two

Update:
Installed ICE - HU + 2 Oval 400Watts speakers on parcel tray.

As usual this too was a DIY [:)] I bought this rear parcel tray from Nitin Automobiles for 450/- (it had the exact speaker shape holes). It is made up of mdf wood (better than the one I see in my office Chevy beat car (Showroom provided one)

I am also fixing the plastic trims that we get around the floor & wheel humps. I will update photos tomorrow.

Here are few pictures of the parcel tray:

Four clamps do the job

The speaker + parcel tray combination is fantastic! Way better than my expectation. Worth every penny invested in these.

Wow looks cool. The entire look of the car has been changed. Make sure cover some thing on the speakers so that it wont absorb the heat when parked under sun.
I guess you could have fitted the plan a bit above the mark ?

What about the hu and pic's ?

Fantastic progress Anand bhai, (i hope i got the name correct) installation of each & every thing is making your car stand out in the crowd.
That parcel tray is looking great. Though i have a bitter experience with it. I too have a MGA supplied MDF tray in my Alto holding a pair of Xplod 400W speaker units. With time it has sagged to quite an extent. The only solution to this is fixing extra wooden cross support under the tray to prevent it from sagging. Do think about that as i don't want you to suffer this after few months.

BTW have you finished with the layering of PVC flooring. Am eagerly waiting for some final pics. Do post some as & when you get time.

If you want better sound, then there is nothing like a speaker box.Buy ones that you can move around.I have them and they don't slide or move much either.

Boot space is compromised at the sides, but if you get movable type ones you can just move them accordingly or unplug them if you need the entire boot. But Since you have gone with the parcel tray use Sagar's idea to strengthen the tray so it doesn't sag over time.

If you have some yoga mats remaining paste them to the underside of the tray that should help reduce the vibrations.

Thanks a lot Samsag, Yes you got my name right [:)]. I will certainly fix either a wooden piece across the plank or may be some curtain rod screwed to its bottom. Also planning to keep the plank covered with thick cloth (multiple folds) whenever I park the car, so that sagging is atleast delayed.

The floor hump in my car gets hot & the hot sun makes the Vinyl carpet smell like its melting, I have removed it for time being & will fix them back soon with little changes.

Thanks Jarpickle, I was in this dilemma for quite sometime - PLANK or BOX. I have listened to same songs (from pendrive) from same Pioneer oval speakers on Varun's car & my neighbours car (both of them have boxes), they are good but somehow I liked the sound from the plank mounted speakers (in the Chevy Beat I drive). So I went ahead with this idea. But as you guys mentioned, it is a fact that such planks do sag after sometime & replacing it will be the only option.

OT: The looks of the interiors, especially when seen from outside has improved a lot thanks to the plank, on the darker side I lose most of the luggage area, but since I drive mostly in city this should not be a problem. But when travelling anywhere with family, I have to either remove this or reduce luggage

+1 jarpickle,
It would have saved you lot of boot space and much more Thump. anyways happy listening[music]
Thanks Sunjay, yes you pointed out right about the luggage. I may be wrong but why is the effect somewhat louder in the plank? especially the Bass portion of songs? Am I missing something here?

Thanks a lot guys, I am really happy that my TAI members (also friends & wellwishers) have liked the progress & ICE setup.

All your comments, suggestions, advices etc are valuable. Thanks guys.

Repair Forecast for next week [confused]

  1. Battery almost in its ending stage or Alternator not enough
  2. Big crack in the right side wheel well area (may be 3 - 4 inches long)
  3. Wheel alignment to be redone (replaced axle boot yesterday)

My bro-in-law has taken my car for a 300km drive and will return by tomorrow. I have already informed him to drive slow (although the mechanic said that crack can be sorted out after sometime). I will post pics of ICE, the crack, battery status etc by tomorrow night.

If there's a burning smell, its better not to use that vinyl. Instead you can go for thick sheets of black foam for the base layer, carpet for the middle & transparent floor mats for the upper layer. This way you won't experience much road noise courtesy the foam sheet, interiors will look stock with those carpets & transparent mats will protect them from dust & dirt. I have done the same thing in my 800, will post some pics of that foam for reference.

Regarding the louder base effect, as yours is a type 1 model the cut for rear stop lamp on the parcel tray is missing & when the hatch door is completely shut you are experiencing good SQ due to the air tight large area, so enjoy the joy of owning a type 1.[;)] alas in type 2 this isn't possible due to that stop lamp. [frustration]

You could move the stop lamp to the top of the rear window. That should help you out.I have oval speakers and I like the sound from the box better than the plank.Must be the kind of speakers that I heard on the plank or other factors.

axle boot grease.JPG

carlast update 009.JPG
The grease seems to be coming out of the Axle boot (differential side, left one), I just spent good amount of time & money on these (all 4 of rubber boots) just two days back, still the issue is cropping up.

Cracks (1).JPG

Cracks (2).JPG
Although the above cracks look small, I am pretty worried about these now. To add to my pain they are growing with every 100kms of driving (approx guess).

Now this welding work is something that wiped the smile off the Mechanics face last time (while replacing axle boots).

rain water (1).JPG

rain water (2).JPG
Rain water under driver footwell area, rear right & left footwell area.

The list of pending issues as of now are

1. Rain water leak inside cabin - NO Idea & not willing to do anything about it
2. New/replacement dashboard - 1000 (Used one)
3. Front bonnet replacement (its slowly bulging into kind of C shape, as it has heavy
Putty work on it, thanks to previous owners accident & cheap fixes) - 1500 (used one)
4. Battery replacement in two months or so - 2500 (Amaron)
5. All door hinges replacement - 600
6. Front two rims almost out of shape - 1500 (MGP)
7. Seats need new sponges - No idea
8. Exhaust pipe end can replacement - 2000/- (I think so)
9. Gearbox Oil change & replacement gearbox (confirmed by our mechanic too) - 3000/-
10. Odometer not working - NA
11. Chassy crack (small yet not comfortable): 500/- (Max)

Total pending repairs might come to approx: 13000/-

I am seriously thinking if it makes any sense to go further with this restoration. May be I picked the wrong car & I just underestimated the expense involved in this restoration.

The aging signs (cracks & splitting sheet metal) are really making me upset if all these repairs are worth doing [sad]

1. Me too facing the same problem. Tried to rectify it but in vain.
2. I still feel IMO the stock dash without color was better than this (no offense though). Was there a need for the dashboard?
3. Bonnet i still dint get the idea of how it bulged?
4. First Get the battery gravity checked, This car electricians are money minded filthy people. DO NOT HESITATE to check with at least 3-4 Shops before concluding.
5. ANY particular reason for changing?
7. Be aware that your seat covers may not be as pliable as you think it may screes and eventually tear.
8. Reason?
9. How it went KAPUT?
10. If i'am not wrong you had changed the odo cable quite recently?
11. Always take precaution when it comes to structural damage.

Do not worry all will be good it just takes time. [:)]
