Why don't you drive that Gold of your friend and give us a mini shootout kinda comparo between Bolero and Gold.It will definitely be fun to read. What say 'King' Raja?
xover you called me a kind so your wish is my command[lol]
here is my mini test drive report of the sumo gold.

my friend is a hotelier and has many cars innova, bmw 3 series and i10 auto he bought sumo just because they are planning a resort near nashik so for rough use , since he was comming to mumbai and visiting me i met him he bought this sumo some 20 days back he was going gaga over it so i thought let me drive so i can belive if what he is saying is true or just hype.

mini report starts-

now first what i dint like was the colour he has this beige golden sumo and with those stickers it was looking not upto my taste.

i sat inside and i felt great because the seats are comfertable ,the seating position is superb you get to see all the edges of the bonnet steering feel is also nice and i found the interiors good better then premier rio seriously ,
i started the engine and surprisingly the clatter was not that loud atall ,but from out side the noise is typical what you can expect from such cars .

the gear lever is more like a truck then a car and ergonomicaly its not that great , i just dont understand who in tata desgins the center console for all their cars like safari ,sumo, grande and slotting the first gear is somewhat same like safari to your extreme left but it slots perfectly and smoothly way way better then the bolero , but in gear 1,3,5 you wont be able to opreate the music system.

the fun started the momment i released the clutch the car has superb power i mean it pulls pulls and just pulls like crazy , infact in 3rd gear at 30kmph i was driving the sumo like a automatic car no input from me and the car was moving just superbly.my friend told me to infact start the car from idle in second gear and it started without any fuss .
i managed speed upto 90 since i dint get proper roads to stretch her and the sumo was crusing effortlessly without any problems atall it was just so easy and fun .the steering dosent give right feedback and is bit vague .
the short turning radius is fun and gives the car toy like nature .
i did drive in some small and medium pot holes and the suspension was good not great but not bad atall .
i sat in the middle row then and belive me its very comfertable then the bolero.
in space, ease of driving , comfort and initial pickup in my view it scores a lot then the bolero hands down the nvh levels inside the sumo are also super its really very silent inside and there is no effort involved in driving the sumo which i seriously dint find in the bolero .

bolero scores big time in looks department and the eye candy of digital console and all for me the quality of plastics is same like the sumo infact i found the sumo to be good but just old fasihoned .

if tata changes the look say and target the urban buyers by making it more sporty and stylish and modern with new age stlying i will close my eyes and buy 1 . i was seriously so impressed with it the way it drives the way it pulls and pulls and pulls there is nothing called turbo lag in the sumo .
imho most of the people who are not liking the sumo is because they have not driven it keep the looks part aside drive the bolero and sumo back to back iam sure the sumo will be super super comfertable then the bolero in every sense .
iam attaching the pics here for you i just dint like colour atall and yes in looks deparment it loses big time to the bolero ,but for some 1 who dosent care for looks the sumo gold is way better vehicle then the bolero atleast in my book .

What a mindblowing review Raja.Loved this part,"

Do you know this is the refined version of 407 Di engine. There is a reason why none have shaken 407's 'numero uno' status in its respective segment and yes its this engine popularly known as "pulling master" by the users of 407.

Also thanks on fulfilling my wish,it was a very neutral and unbiased review.Loved every corrner of it.

Here's one Sumo for Army -
It's the sumo 4WD, doesn't sell much.

Govt organisations across the nation has a lot of affection for Bolero
+1, why do they select Bolero over Sumo even if the price is high? Sumo does the job for basic applications.

Thanks for the short review Raja, you covered everything and i accept the fact that Sumo is comfortable for middle row seat and has good power. But these are best for commercial purposes. Admire the looks of Sumo, but the cheap vinyls in the side profile makes the sumo awkward.
A Third row front facing seat would have been welcomed, because the jump seats has 0 comfort levels and gives a nice massage to your back.

The looks of sumo are nothing to write about seriously .about the rear seat comfort it will be same infact better then the bolero because of the headroom .
Apart from the front of sumo there is nothing exciting about it seriously .

And it shows how tata motors are lazy in every aspect they are killing the sumo gold, the grande and the safari too inspite of all being really great cars .
Indian buyers even in rural areas have access to all tv Chanel's , Internet and their choice is improving and is par with urban buyers now but still tata is adamant in giving the same old desgins with their every refresh .

If tata just makes the grande with coil springs , better interiors , abs I will buy it rather then a Scorpio .
The problem is not with their vehicles but their strategy , ideology and execution what they need is to refresh their management and onky then product refresh will be something which people will care about .

In the end what is more important the ease and comfort of driving or just power delivery ? Sumo gold in my book is way way easy comfertable and fun to drive then the bolero .
iam not a technical person darling iam a person who gives more marks to a car in real world use and I found sumo gold superior to bolero in real world use again read comfort, ease and fun to drive factor here.

Infact I myself would love a review from you were you can compare both and give us the perfect review which will be a technical review in lay mans term is that possible ? Would love if you could do it because you are the right person who can do that .

Tamilnadu Govt. brought 87 refreshed Bolero this month for Chennai Police Dept.

Buddy I'd have done it but the issue is that neither I have driven Sumo Gold nor Bolero M2DIcr,instead I have driven Spacio(the pone which has Tata 407 engine) and Bolero vlx CRDe and comparing both of them is not possible.

Still, will look ahead of driving them(Boleros are there in circle but I just haven't developed any interest in driving them)and Sumo old TD can be arranged any day.

It was way back in 2001 when our family was shifting from Bokaro Steel City to Hazaribagh where we hired a TATA Spacio soft-top to ferry us to our destination. That is where I felt the massive grunt and seductive sound of this 3000 407 Di engine. The torque was seemless and the car pulled like crazy. No doubt I fell down in love with this engine since way back then.

Now even though TATA always had this engine in Sumo under Sumo Spacio range,it was very crude for any family use.But when I learnt that TATA have launched GOLD with refined version of this engine I felt really good.I knew they had a winner in their hands.

Surprisingly I never thought that even personal buyers will pay so much attention to GOLD that now they are paying.Personally I love the way GOLD looks especially in white colour. And even though masses love Bolero for its raw muscle I have never really liked it.

But I have to agree here with other members if TATA wanted to shake the segment they would have needed a completely new product at a worthy price.Something they failed with Grande,Aria and Venture.[frustration]

@ RAJA

The GOLD you drove was cr4 or Di version? I couldn't see any cr4 badge on the pics that you have posted. The cr4 badge is housed right under the front fender around base corner of the wheel.

The only issues I found with this 3000cc engine is the redline.
C'mon yaar just 1000 turbocharged revs!!
Though the long ratios help a lot but still a redline at 3000 rpm is not acceptable,at least 4000-4500 rpm is a must.

Unlike modern diesel engines that have a long rev range, this 3.0 lt engine was developed for commercial purpose where more than high revving motor what was required was a torque king motor which it is IMO.

Unlike modern short-stroked(which revvs faster and higher) engine this a typical "Big Bang" engine or in lay man's term a deep bore engine which helps in generating monstrous torque at lower revvs, resulting in overall very narrow power band. But in that power band it really is king no doubt.Gist is that this engine was develpoed more for pulling heavy duty goods than providing high revving acceleration.

Sumo beats Bolero in every department except it's sales number, very strange
Old adage goes like this: "What you sow is what you reap."

Thanks to tremendous marketing, product position and slow image building every Mahindra product outdoes equivalent TATA by huge margin.

Also not to mention Sumo's Taxi image which simply hampers its sales figure.
