Old adage goes like this: "What you sow is what you reap."

Thanks to tremendous marketing, product position and slow image building every Mahindra product outdoes equivalent TATA by huge margin.

Also not to mention Sumo's Taxi image which simply hampers its sales figure.
Well said bro,Mahindra took it's marketing game one step ahead of TATA's who just concentrated on moving their product out of showroom floor's regardless of weather cabbie buy's it or a private buyer they were least bothered and that particular strategy is backfiring till now except couple of model's from TATA line up every other car's comes with the Taxi image.

Indian buyers coming out of the image thing. I don't see this thing ever happening. And because of this, many competent cars are eating dust at the stockyards. We spend more money, sometimes beyond our capacity to buy an expensive ride. Actually we could have bought another car, which is more competent, comfortable and efficient at much lesser money, but the image thing comes into picture. In other words "Pratishtha mein Praan Gawaayein". In most of the cases, TATA has offered more (better also) for less. But the image thing has always come in between.
Sumo is more spacious, more comfortable. And powerful engine too. In the given comparison, I would go for gold. Though sales figure say another story.

We are about to get a work order in Maharashtra. Now, we are looking for an MUV which will transport the staff and labour from the quarters to the work site. Needless to say, only high ground clearance UVs will be able to withstand those non existent roads.

Our priorities are :

1) Number of seats
2) Ability to withstand abuse with zilch maintainence
3) A/C
4) Power steering
5) Fuel efficiency

Quite clearly, we want a no-nonsense vehicle with negligible electronics which can withstand the rough usage and poor maintenance of our site conditions. Looking at the above requirements, only 2 vehicles came to my mind - Sumo Gold and Bolero. Yes, we will need a BS4 vehicle ONLY.

All variants of Bolero come with A/C and power steering. So the Bolero SLE is good for us. But the base models of Sumo Gold does not have these. Hence, the apt variant of Sumo Gold would be the EX. Problem is the EX costs about 50k more than the Bolero and comes with unwanted features like body graphics and painted bumpers. The painted bumpers are of no use as within a month of usage, the vehicle would be fully muddy and discoloured!

Bolero :

+ Cheaper
+ Mahindra's ruggedness and reliability
+ More fuel efficient

- Less space in cabin
- 1 year unlimited kms warranty

Sumo :

+ 2 years 75000 kms warranty
+ More space to seat more people
+ More power

- Costs more than Bolero
- Tata's dubious reputation of A.S.S.

Frankly, for a vehicle of such usage, the Sumo Gold seems much more apt since it has the biggest advantage, that is - SPACE.

P.S.: I was very very interested in the newly launched TATA Xenon crew cab @ 7 Lacs but the on road price was not favourable and our primary intention was of transporting people, not goods... so a pick up did not make sense. It would have looked uber cool though!

Considering your requirement and usage i would suggest the sumo gold. The LX doesnt have power steering though has AC, in which case its much cheaper than SLE (you could fit a PS kit later) LX is much cheaper than SLE , or go for the GX version which is 70K or so more.

Tricky one! But for your usage i would still recommend the Sumo. I wouldnt worry about A.S.S with a Sumo!

Hi,

I voted for Mahindra Bolero

Mahindra Bolero is having attractive looks and features of Bolero is quiet good as compered to Tata Sumo. Tata Sumo looks really outdated and not impressed with the interior and exterior looks of Tata Sumo.

Apart from space it seems that Bolero has got this deal sealed, well almost literally. So GO FOR BOLERO.
True, but we are still evaluating whether it is wise enough to plonk that additional 50k for the Sumo Gold. Space and seating capacity is one MAJOR advantage it has.

It would be cruel to give a heavy vehicle like the Sumo without power steering! Problem is, the variant which has power steering has many unwanted features which makes it more expensive.

The LX which does not have power steering is only 4k cheaper than the Bolero, ex-showroom price. Fitting power steering from outside is not an option, we would not want to fiddle with the reliability of the vehicle, especially since it is meant to operate under rough conditions.

Atleast it is showing good numbers and is not a market dud.

Btw aftermarket fitment of powersteering (using OEM kit) is pretty common i hear. This shouldnt affect reliability, but if it worries the GX version is worth the extra moolah spent!

Bolero is a mid wheelbase SUV with wheelbase of 2680 mm where as Sumo Gold is a short wheelbase SUV with wheelbase of just 2425 mm .Now despite short wheelbase the space and comfort level of Sumo is far better than Bolero. Also the Sumo has heavy duty extremely rugged body over frame chasis which gives it the kerb weight of huge 1820 kg.Bolero also has body over frame design but not with Sumo like heavy chasis and for that reason it's kerb weight is just 1575 kg.The difference comes in to action during an event of impact.Heavy duty chasis with high tensile strength steel has better protecting ability during collision.
Also the 3000 CC engine of Sumo is more powerful than Bolero. In Bolero the diesel engine clatter is quiet audible. For Gold the engine noise is very much less and some times it is difficuilt to know if the engine runs on diesel or petrol ! Sumo Gold can comfortably cruise at 130 to 140 km/hr on highways. This is not the case with Bolero.
Short turning radius of Sumo ( less than 5 M ) is very useful in parking and in city driving.
Of course Bolero has adavantage of longer wheelbase which gives more stability to the vehicle.I think Bolero is more suitable as personal vehicle where as Sumo is undisputed choice in taxi segment. Also Bolero looks more attractive and price is quite less than Sumo Gold. It's massive sale figures clearly suggest that it is the first choice of majority of people in India.Redesigning Sumo body is difficuilt because of short wheelbase and rear jump seats. I think that in the comming months Sumo Gold will eat some market share of Bolero. But still Bolero popularity will continue.

Apart from looks Dr IMHO the sumo is better personal car to drive its extremely easy and fun to drive compared to bolero which is extremely uncomfortable .sumo in seating position itself beats the bolero hands down .
If tata makes the sumo in new age styling say something like a premier rioand even give the same kind of interiors which are now and gives the same engine I will seriously close my eyes and buy 1 I was so impressed with the sumo seriously one has to drive the sumo to know how fun it is to drive it
