I don't think TATA will go through the trouble of re engineering the car to accommodate ABS and airbags, as its core customer's are price concious and not life concious.
ABS makes sense in real when you drive too fast. Sumo body is so strong that the airbag becomes requirement for the opposite car during collision[:D].

Ok ok
if not ABS, but they can surely plonk 4x4 system in it and make it a true off roader.
As TML provides 4x4 sumo to Army and i have it very closely.
4X4 vehicles are complicated and difficuilt to maintain.... as I know from my long years of expierence. The problem is mainly with the alignment of transfer case and gear box. This is particularly for part time four wheel drive vehicles.
The full time four wheel drive vehicles like Rangerover and Fortuner the 4X4 mechanism has worked perfectly.
Secondly you need 4X4 application very rarely. In most of the common off roading you never need 4X4 .

The Sumo with 4X4 used in military is mainly used as ambulence.

Sirjee you are married to Nano from past 2 year's, I expect to see an ownership report from you, please pen it down when you have time it will be very helpful for prospective owner's.
As far as Indian road conditions are concerned I must admit that Tata nano has tried its level best and every indian national should take pride of that. Instead of going for other brands in small car category I am strongly of the openion that there is no match for Tata Nano. It is a new concept and after more than two years of use I do admit that it is worth.

One of the reasons TATA cars lose their early steam is because of their ever increasing prices. Now GOLD costs around 7.20 lacs ex-showroom Ranchi as compared to 6.96 lacs when it was launched.

But the price increase is across the board, even Mahindra has increased the prices of all it's product's.

Extremely negative review of Sumo Gold on Carwale Worst Sumo Gold - A Review on Tata Sumo by Ravi Kiran - CarWale

This seems to be completely bias review.
Saw the extremity of the review, i do not agree with the owner's points as we know he uses the vehicles for taxi purpose which means those[evil]drivers drive this beast and of-course they are bound to scrap the vehicle.

I like to share the below experiences in the Sumo Gold and here is a review as a passenger :
- I take a cab home and i got a chance to hop into brand new Sumo Gold EX
- At first i liked the color and interiors, decent if not good.
- At the back it had jump seats, so it was absolute that the comfort was 0 and too bumpy though we were at moderate speed.
- The engine seemed pretty responsive but very noisy[anger].

I am surprised that you found Sumo Gold engine noisy.Perhaps it was Sumo Gold BSIII and not Gold CR4. I have found Sumo Gold CR4 engine the smoothest and most silent amongst most of the modern diesel SUVs.

I would settle for Bolero though its low on space and creature comfort is not as good as Sumo but bolero wins hands down when comes to handling. I have driven Sumo, Bolero and Scorpio and found Bolero better of the lot. Confidence inspiring handling, good steering feedback, rock steady at 100 +, doesn't unsettle during hard breaking while sumo and Scorpio behave like boat on whieels.[frustration]

Somehow bolero give Masculine feeling which is missing in Sumo (I am not saying Sumo is feminine)

As far as the model is concerned, Any vehicle registered in Bangalore should be of BS-4 and like i said the engine had good power output.(Have travelled in old Sumo too)

Just talked to TATA Sales GM Basudev Auto HZBG recently. He told me THAT of all the cars Sumo Gold has got the best momentum and IS selling off the shelf like anything. But still he said that there is a long way for them to replace Bolero as India's numero uno entry UV.

I have never driven the sumo gold but 1 freind of mine will be visiting me he has bought one and has all praises for it now my freind is not some rural guy he is a quite a stylish guy he simply loves sumo shape.

About bolero it looks good but believe me I will never buy it becuase I have driven it and believe me it's horrible car I have ever driven , I was shocked to see how can mahindra after asking so much money can make a crude vehicle like this .
Extremely vague hard and irritating gear shifts , and hard clutch the driving position and everything is very uncomfortable , apart from looks I seriously don't find anything great in bolero .
Now if some 1 buys a sumo removes all that silly stickers and buy some nice meaty tyres and put some good alloys It can look very smart infact they must bring black colour in that with some chrome alloys it can equally look hot .
But yes I agree with many that if tata can modernize it it will be better .

Remember one thing all those 10,000 boleros are not the one which we guys like the 10,000 is of all versions of bolero .
In last 6 months I have only seen 2 refreshed boleros.
