For quite some time, I am eyeing for a new phone! This time, I wanted a phone with -

  • A big and great display, not a tablet though!
  • Awesome camera!
  • Lots and lots of features
  • Premium looks and finishing

I have a habit of doing extensive research when it comes to cars and phones. After comparing a lot of phones, I came to a conclusion that -

  1. A 5" to 5.5" display is perfect for me. The HTC One, Sony Xperia Z1 and the Samsung Galaxy S4/Note 3 have great displays.
  2. The Nokia Lumia series have the best cameras. But I cannot stand the WP OS. So, when it comes to Android, the Sony Xperia Z1 has the best camera followed by the Samsung Note3.
  3. Features - the ultimate king of features is the Note3. Somehow, I am addicted to the convenience and the bling factor of the S pen (stylus).
  4. Premium looks - I find Lenovo phones good looking! Followed by HTC, Sony and iPhone in that order. Yes, iPhone comes last for me, simply because its a tiny device and the styling is stagnant now IMHO.

So, finally the contenders were the Sony Xperia Z1 and the Samsung Galaxy Note3. Now, I am a Samsung hater and a Sony loyalist. Simply because Sony makes classy phones with great build and design, which looks premium. Their high end phones are made of glass and metal. On the other hand, Samsung makes the same old plastic phones with the same old design.

Advantages Z1 over Note3:

  • Design of the phone
  • Superior camera
  • Water proof and dust proof (it does not matter to me)
  • Better screen (debatable!)
Advantages Note3 over Z1:

  • Bigger AMOLED screen
  • Better video recording (4k)
  • Lots of features like air gestures, S voice, S health, etc.
  • Samsung usually comes up with OS updates faster than Sony
  • Finally, the host of S pen features - its convenience and usability

I personally feel Z1 has a better screen than the Note3 because the LCD screen of the former is more neutral and produces more natural colours. It does not look fake, bright and oversaturated like the AMOLED screen of the Samsung. The Z1's screen is not the best in extreme viewing angles but that wont really matter to me as I always look at the phone head on!

Personally for me, where the Note3 trumps the Z1 is the host of awesome features and conveniences it offers with the stylus. Also, the Z1 has the same UI as my current Sony Xperia S.

Yes, the Note3 costs about 8k more than the Z1. Is it worth the extra money? IMHO, yes. I just wish, for that price, Samsung offered atleast a 20MP camera in the Note3. Anyways this time, I would trade a Sony for a Samsung. I am just waiting for the day when I can afford it!

As of now, I cannot afford the Note3 even with a 10% discount!

I did consider the Nexus 5. Awesome phone. But it has a 8 MP camera which is a step backward from my current phone's 12 MP camera.

Now, I am not in a MP race, but I confirmed with a friend who had a Sony Xperia P (8 MP camera) and now bought a Nexus 5. He says Sony phones have better cameras and the camera is not a strong point of the Nexus 5.

you can never compare sony's cam with nexus if camera quality is what you are looking at.
Apart from camera, its a superb handset in this price range.

FYI, Nexus 5 has one of the worst camera in the current era of smartphones.
Raj, I suggest you to wait for the S5 which will be launched in Feb or March (wait, wait, wait, lol!).

Correct. After the current Nokia Lumia series, I have always believed Sony phones have the best cameras. Though I have never used a Lumia extensively, I have seen pictures from friend's phones and also read reviews online.

My Xperia S (released about 2 years back) still manages to click excellent pictures when compared to other high end phones like Nexus, Lenovo, HTC in the 25k-30k range.

But, poor light photography is not my phone's strength. If used without flash, the pictures appear dark but look nice. If used with flash, the elements are visible but the picture turns pale yellow in colour!

Anyways, coming to the point, I read several reviews comparing the cheaper Sony Xperia Z1 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. While, the Sony's 20 MP camera was obviously better in many aspects, for low light conditions and for video shooting, the Note 3's camera was touted to be better than the Z1's. Because I guess Note3 is equipped with dual LED flash and 4k video recording. I am not giving huge importance to 4K recording since I hardly record videos and I anyways dont have a 4K TV!

Also, I am assuming the file size of a 4K video would be huge, thus making it difficult to upload on FB or YouTube.

FYI, Nexus 5 has one of the worst camera in the current era of smartphones.

I dont mind waiting for the S5. But what is special about the S5?

The main reason I am attracted to the Note3 is the S-pen. I dont think the S5 will come equipped with a stylus.

Oppo the 2nd most popular company in China is gearing up to enter the Indian market, officially. To start with they will launch range of products including the Oppo N1 on 30th of this month. Sonam Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan are the official Oppo brand ambassadors in India.

The handsets will be launched on 30th and by first week of February it will be made available in retail stores and probably online. The handset price range will be from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 40,000. No point in guessing – the Oppo N1 will be the premium handset with rotating camera. Gionee Elife E7 mini is also using the same rotating camera concept but their handset is priced at under Rs. 19,000.

Probably we might also see some Oppo TV ads in February month. The Oppo N1 sports a 5.9 inch screen with FHD resolution. It comes powered by Qualcomm quad core Snapdragon processor clocked at 1.7GHz with Adreno 320 GPU.

N1 runs on Android 4.2 with 2GB RAM and optional 16/32GB storage. This is a single SIM handset and the key attraction is the single 13MP AF camera that can be rotated 180 degrees (front / rear camera). Other feature is the rear touch panel that can be used of scrolling content, taking pictures etc.
