Android is a Linux-based operating system designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. Initially developed by Android, Inc., which Google backed financially and later bought in 2005, Android was unveiled in 2007 along with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance: a consortium of hardware, software, and telecommunication companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices.The first Android-powered phone was sold in October 2008.

Android is open source and Google releases the code under the Apache License. This open-source code and permissive licensing allows the software to be freely modified and distributed by device manufacturers, wireless carriers and enthusiast developers. Additionally, Android has a large community of developers writing applications ("apps") that extend the functionality of devices, written primarily in a customized version of the Java programming language. In October 2012, there were approximately 1,000,000 apps available for Android, and the estimated number of applications downloaded from Google Play, Android's primary app store, was 50 billion as of Sep 2013.

A developer survey conducted in April–May 2013 found that Android is the most popular platform for developers, used by 71% of the mobile developer population.

Android's share of the global smartphone market, led by Samsung products, was 64% in March 2013.In July 2013 there were 11,868 different models of Android device, scores of screen sizes and eight OS versions simultaneously in use. The operating system's success has made it a target for patent litigation as part of the so-called "smartphone wars" between technology companies.As of May 2013, 48 billion apps have been installed from the Google Play store,and as of September 3, 2013, there have been 1 billion Android devices activated.

The latest version of Android is named after a favorite chocolate treats, KitKat.

Fantastic thread . Let me inaugurate this thread with a news that will delight android lovers .

Earlier this month images from FCC filings showed what appeared to be Google’s LG-made Nexus 5 following the device first leaking in Google’s promotional video for Android 4.4 KitKat. Today we’ve received the images above showing what looks to be the Nexus 5 in the wild, and it looks identical to pre-production units floating through the FCC and elsewhere. The tipster also sent along the videos below, which could give us a glimpse at Android 4.4 KitKat running on the Nexus 5, although it looks like the bootup from Google Play Edition phones.

The device in the images was apparently left charging unsupervised by a Google employee at a bar (yeah, lol) where an employee of the bar was able to snap the photos and short videos…

Saw some Lenovo handsets yesterday, awesome ones they are. They have launched few new ones one around 26k like note2 and also saw a new handset which can connect your pendrive as your external memory slot for viewing videos/movies and other stuffs.
Dont have the variant details.Pretty good built quality and much solid it feels.

@Vijay, Bro, you can also view photos, videos or music stored in a pendrive on your S3 via connecting it with an OTG cable. It's present since the S2 days.

I have read a news today and also seen a article on TV that android OS being hacked thru' the apps downloaded, so there is a warning issued to download the apps from trustworthy providers only

Finally, BlackBerry Messenger is coming to Android and iPhone this weekend

The BBM app will be available for devices running Android 4.0 and up, or iOS 6 and iOS 7. It will allow Android and iOS users to communicate with BlackBerry owners.

BlackBerry's popular BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) instant chat application will be available for Google's Android and Apple's iPhone this weekend, the company said.

Rumours about the app coming to Android and iPhone started in June. The app will be available for devices running Android 4.0 and up, or iOS 6 and iOS 7. It will allow Android and iOS users to communicate with BlackBerry owners.

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) is a proprietary Internet-based instant messenger and videotelephony application included on BlackBerry devices that allows messaging (and videocalls for BlackBerry 10 smartphones) between BlackBerry users. BBM currently has more than 60 million monthly active customers on BlackBerry alone, and the overwhelming majority use BBM an average of 90 minutes per day.

The news comes in the wake of other rumours that Blackberry could fire 40% of its staff. This comes at a time that the company is suffering heavy losses from its failed PlayBook tablet and a fading popularity in the smartphone market.

using an OTG is a feature of ICS or jelly bean on an android. pretty much all handsets support this feature.

edios, superbad, i know that buddy using an OTG is a feature and almost since S2 handset time supports that feature, will let you know the exact feature that comes as an OEM with the box, maybe the cable or drive itself to support.Just shared what i came to know from a dealer, but its half news so sorry about that.Will try to know the exact features.
But as the handset overall Lenovo looks, feels and works pretty good as an whole package.Much better it felt compared to xolo, MMx, and other brands.
Built quality is better compared to even sammy's plastics.
