Every Automotive enthusiast likes to pamper his/her car in a way which they feel makes their car look perfect and stand out from the crowd. Earlier all the vehicles owned by my family have been pampered but have never received complete justice as I was a student then and did not have much of vitamin M or let’s say no vitamin M and would always have to convince my father on something I would like to do to the car. But the last two cars have seen a slight change as i have started earning. The last car also I could not work on much but the present car I have done up to my heart’s content.

There is no end to the list of mods and accessories for an auto enthusiast but there comes a point where you feel yes the car is now standing to his/her vision or expectation.
Same has happened with me it’s been almost 6.5 months since my dad purchased the German beauty and from that day till now I can finally say it has reached my expectation or vision how I wanted it to be.

The Polo no doubt is one of the hottest hatches at present in India but still I always wanted it to stand out from the rest. So after a lot of hard work and dedication by me I have finally managed to turn the Elegant German Beauty to a Hot German Chic.

IMG_20140524_200343.jpg

The lists of my work are as follows and have been completely based on my mood, liking and imagination and also the availability of Vitamin M. Also as I had purchased a pre-owned vehicle with no warranty it allowed me to do what I liked freely without worrying about warranty issues.

1) Illuminated Door Scuff Plates

This was the first thing that I installed. I had installed the same ones for my cousins civic and had loved it. So I got it installed from Opera House Mumbai

1.jpg

Price: Rs 1150/- (Inclusive of Labour).

• This work does require slicing of the inner roof lamps so there are chances of warranty getting void.

2) Centre Arm Rest

Earlier to the Polo I used to drive the Toyota Corolla and Toyota Innova (still driving) both of these cars had a centre storage box which acted as a very good centre arm rest. So when I started driving the Polo I found my left hand feeling dam uncomfortable during long drives or early morning drives, the bumper to bumper traffic was not an issue as my hand would be on the Gears all the time. So the second thing I wanted was an arm rest. Did a bit of enquiry on this and found that the original centre arm rest of VW costed around 10-12k which I thought was too expensive for it. So once when I was just visiting Opera House at Mumbai I saw on display a Universal Arm rest. I enquired and found the price dam cheap so I told the shop guy to fit it in the car. It matched perfectly well and costed me not even 10% of the cost of the original arm rest. The quality is good with good storage space.

2.jpg

2(1).jpg

Price: Rs 850/- (Inclusive of labour)

• The positioning of the armrest needs to be perfect else can cause a lot of disturbance during gear changes.

3) Black Roof

This is a new trend going on around now about blackening your roof, and my car being white in colour it would surely change looks of the car. There were 2 options for this either get the roof painted black or a new thing that was going around vinyl wraps. I planned for the vinyl wrap as it was an easily reversible process and costed almost same as getting the roof painted. I had gone with one of my friends to 3M to get his car detailed at that time I saw the same roof top work done for a car. I enquired about the same and got a quote for my car. The plain dull black- Rs 5500/- & Carbon Fibre Wrap- Rs 11500/-.I felt the price was a bit expensive but again it was a 3M so I told them I will decide in few days. Out of curiosity I casually asked my vinyl guy at Opera House for the price and was pretty shocked, the Dull Black- Rs 1800/- and Carbon Fibre Black- Rs 2500/- of course there was a bit of difference in quality but still at this price I could get the vinyl wrapped 4 times where I could just wrap it once at 3M. So I gave a go ahead sign to my vinyl guy and the work was completed in 2 hours.

3.jpg

Price: Rs 2500/- (Inclusive of fitting)

• The vinyl enhances the look of the car and has the advantage of removing it when selling in case the person buying doesn’t like it bringing the car back to stock in an hour’s time.

4) Headlamps

This was one of the biggest decisions I must have ever taken in my life and a lot of thought was put in it. At first I thought of not spending much on it but later somehow convinced me to it. The following were the final shortlisted contenders
a) Original Smoked Headlamps; this was one of my first options as it was a stock headlamp and the slight smoked effect would surely enhance the look of the White car.

Price: Rs 8000/-

b) GTI headlamps: These were the replica of the Passat headlamps with projectors and DRL, there were different makes for this one and looked good but the stock ones did not have HID bulbs and that was an extra fitment.

4.jpg

Price: Rs 23000-25000/- China make without HID. HID would have been another 5-6K (Without installation Charges)
Rs 125000/- original GTI headlamps (Made in Germany) (Without installation Charges)

c) Stock Headlamp Customization: I was browsing Quikr & OLX to see if there were any preowned original GTI lamps for the Polo, I could not find one but found some people willing to customize my stock headlamps. I spoke with a few and the price ranged from Rs 23000-30000/-. I even had a word with one of the TAI members (Vinnie) specialised in this and got a quote from him. Later on just when I had gone for some work to opera house I saw a black VW Polo 1.6 standing there with a customized headlamp giving the looks like an Audi Headlamp. On asking around had a word with the owner met up the person who did it and finalized the work. This was the one that I opted for, as this would retain my old headlamps and would let me customize the headlamp in the way that I wanted at a much reasonable price. I customized it by smoking the reflectors black and installing a Bi-Xenon Projector with BMW type ring and a LED tube. The Projectors had 6000k HID with them. The setup give a Audi style look to the headlamps

4(1).jpg

Selected
4(2).jpg

Price: 16500/- (with installation)

• All the above mentioned setups are completely plug and play and require not wire cutting, but the company can create a bit of fuss for warranty. It depends on the customer how he fights back.

5) Alloys
The above setup had already changed the looks of the car to a great extent, but there were certain things necessary to do to make it completely perfect from my view. The Polo Highline comes with company fitted alloys but somehow I did not like the stock ones. The New TSI now comes with classic set of company alloys. So now my mind was set on upgrading the alloys. I first had planned for a matt black Alloy and had loved one design that I saw on Google images. I tried finding a similar design but was not able to. So I decide on another design but when I tried it on the car, the black alloy did not go well with the car (Personal View). So I finally settle for a Hyper Silver with Black alloy. The looks of the car had now completely transformed.

Planned
5.jpg

Finalized
5(1).jpg

Price: Rs 11500/- (Alloy price 20500/- – Stock alloy replacement price 9000/-)

6) Fog Lamps HID

The headlamp assembly had completely made head turns and even makes it turn now but the one thing that was killing its glory was the stock halogen bulbs in the Fog lamps. So i had stopped using the fog lamps for some days. Many people told me to change it but I had refused saying that I won’t use the fog lamps but later realised yes whenever I plan to use it there will be a problem. So finally decided on changing the Bulbs and Upgrade to HID. I am a fan of pure white light and hence I decide on the 6000k fog lamps (I know white light has the problem of getting scattered under street light or during rains but major use of mine was city so opted for that). There were 2 options for me china and Philips. Was going to opt for Philips but my guy told that china works fine and you save a lot so I opted for china ones.

Before
6.jpg

After
6(1).jpg

Price: Rs 3500/- (Inclusive of Labour)

• It’s a plug and play unit and does not require any wire cutting.

After all this the car had reached my expected visualization but still there were a few minor things which I needed to do to get it to perfect.

7) Spoiler

Well at first I planned on getting some skirting’s and spoiler for the car. But the problem with the Skirting’s is that the car is already low with ground clearance of 165mm and just manages to cross the speed bumps and potholes without under body scrapping. The bumper has twice scraped in really bad pothole. So the thought of installing skirting’s on the car was cancelled as spending so much and then one impact will crack the skirting but the idea of spoiler still remained so I called up my guy at Opera House and booked up a Wing Spoiler. Now the spoiler is made of POP (Plaster of Paris) and hence it requires painting but as I had put vinyl on my roof top, I decided on putting vinyl on the spoiler rather than paint. So got it wrapped with Vinyl. The finish however of vinyl was not perfect so later on did a DIY but cutting the rough edges and spray painting it black.

After spray paint and wrap
7.jpg

Finish
7(1).jpg

Price: Rs 1500/- (Inclusive of Vinyl & Labour)

• The spoiler installation is pretty easy on clamps. The finish only on vinyl was pretty bad due to a lot of bends and curves on the spoiler but later cut up the rough edges and painted it black with a spray can that is available for Rs 200/-.

8) Front Grill

Well the car has become perfect with the front look stunning but the biggest thing spoiling the look was the two chrome strips on the Grill. First I thought of purchasing the GTI grill with the honey Comb Mesh. But later said it would look like most of the transformed cars. So another thing struck my mind and thanks to TAI member for his words that I remembered it. So I removed the Grill myself and covered up the centre VW logo with some tape and sprayed the rest of the area completely with Black spray can which is available in the market for Rs 175 - Rs 200/-.
Finally got the look for what I was imagining of.

Spray Can Used

8(4).jpg

After Spray

8(1).jpg

8.jpg

Finish

8(2).jpg

Price: 200/- (Only for spray cans which I used for the spoiler also and yet more than half left)

• The grill work is an irreversible process and you may lose the chrome strip for ever as I am not sure if the Thinner will help in getting back the looks to normal, the spray can used is a proper paint spray with lacquer and thinner and gives an excellent finish when done perfectly.

9) Tail Lamp
The car had transformed completely but the rear end looked the same. So I had already spent quiet a lot so did not want to spend much so thought of smoking it up but then the whole procedure would cost around 3-4 k and then again it would require the tail lamp to be played with like the headlamps. When I was browsing Ebay I saw these headlamp Film, I had a word with a dealer then went to my film guy to get the exact measurements as the film was available per foot wise. I placed an order for it and received it within a day as the dealer was from Mumbai only. Got it installed from my film guy it was a pretty tedious job had the tail lamps removed for the perfect finish. At first I thought the shade was too dark but as I installed the tail lamp on the car the result was mind-blowing

Parcel

9.jpg

9(1).jpg

Tail lamp Removed

9(2).jpg

Lights passage before work

9(3).jpg

Lights passage after work

9(4).jpg

Price: Rs 700/- (400/- Film – 300/- Labor)

• The reason for using film was it’s a reversible process and a cheap one too. The finish is dark but it easily lets out 90% of the light so no problems during night drives.

10) Exhaust

My Cousin got married a couple of days back so had gone to Panvel for his marriage. Fortunately I came across my Toyota Corolla which my dad’s friend had purchased from us. I had installed a FFE on the car and listening to the sound of the exhaust made me craving for that thing which I had enjoyed in the petrol’s but is missing in the diesels. So after the marriage I went to my Silencer Chap who is one of the very well-known experts in FFE here in Mumbai. The moment he said a turbo diesel he said it very difficult. It seems the turbo kills the possibility of any sound that a NA engine can produce. Even if a Turbo Charged engine produces some noise it will be faint. I said I can do with the faint noise. So he removed the end can of the Car and checked the noise. The noise was faint but good base in that faint noise. He said if we add an end can to this the noise will get reduced, so he put up a straight pipe instead. I won’t say it’s even close to the petrol’s but somewhere in between.

Price: Rs 850/- (Labour & Straight Pipe)

• The Exhaust note has a good bass and works very well before the turbo range and after the turbo range. In the Turbo range it is just the engine noise that is heard.

11) Engine Cover

I won’t say that it’s a mod but during one of the services which the earlier owner had done the company had lost the engine cover and was claiming that it was missing before it came for service. The owner did not bother, so it came up on me. It did not affect the engine performance or anything but the engine looked open with all pipes and parts openly visible. Asked the ASS for a new one but they did not have in stock so luckily found one at Chor Bazaar in good condition.

After installing Engine Cover

11.jpg

Price: Rs 3000/-

12) AC Vents

Three out of the four AC vents that I had received were broken. I had not bothered for some time as the ac was getting chilly and needed no direction but then when I am doing up all of the car why leave this small thing. So enquired at ASS the price was around Rs 5000/- then asked one guy dealing out only in VW parts he said Rs 3000/- then finally got it from another chap for a much cheaper price.

Price: Rs 1800/- (full set)

As mentioned earlier no matter how much you do up your car it’s always less for an auto enthusiast. But after doing all this finally the expected vision in my mind has come and now my vision is in front of you’ll. The other few things I had planned was music system and seat covers but dropped it as I am pretty satisfied by the audio quality of the stock and the present seat covers are of really good quality just that the colour is beige.

IMG_20140524_112615.jpg

IMG_20140524_112732.jpg

Of all the Mods that I have done above its just the Grills & Headlamps( Smoking) that is irreversible otherwise the whole car can be bought to the stock look by the person who buys it any time if he doesn’t like it.

IMG_20140524_112951.jpg

IMG_20140524_190538.jpg

Other than these the car has done mechanical work as follows

- Front Suspension with Shock absorbers & Tie Rod with steering Ball Joint.

- EGR Vacuum, Turbo Hose Pipe & EGR Unit (By VW Company due to part defect)

Here was a short version of how the Elegant German beauty turned to and German Hot Chic. The explanations look pretty easy but it took a lot of thinking, research, dedication and hard-work for the end result.

Looks good. Can you please put up a video of the exhaust sound?
Also does the headlight leveler work? Is there any issue of water leakage?

Here is a short video of the exhaust note. I hope this does some justice a little bit.For this i sat up with my Exhaust Workshop guy and understood the whole thing. In a NA Petrol or a NA diesel(which is very rare these days) the exhaust gases produced is directly released to the exhaust pipe hence it produces an excellent exhaust note but what happens in a turbo charged car is that the Exhaust gas produced is directed to the turbine in the turbocharger and then let out through the exhaust pipe so the moment the direction of the exhaust gas is changed the noise is lost or you get very faint one. For the Polo i have removed the end can and put up a straight pipe hence producing bit of note. Also the Note is heard before the Turbo is activated and after the turbo zone i.e around 3500 RPM and above.

I have not tried it but will surely try it tomorrow night and see. About water leakage there has been no issue, just the day after the assembly during washing the headlights did fog a bit so went and got it re-sealed so no issue after that.

I don't know how I missed this thread. Your polo looks absolutely stunning. [thumbsup]
All the mods done on the car are perfect & suits it well. No tacky mods!
Even I own a Polo TDI but the TL 2012 model. All stock! [embarass] I love to mod but unfortunately dad isn't willing to spend on mods & I haven't started working to make money. [frustration]

Video is not opening unfortunately.
Does it have a separate low and high beam? If so then why have you put a Bi-Xenon projector?

Thanks for the appreciation bro. Even i had to wait couple of years before getting to do all the stuff freely on the car. Even now the car is purchased by my dad but has handed it over to me and allows me to do the stuff with my own vitamin M. Dont worry bro even your time will come when you can freely do it on your car.

Sorry for the Video actually had kept the settings on private. I have changed the setting now, do let me know if you are able to see the video now. No the headlamps do not have separate low and high beam its a single barrel headlamp hence have used the Bi-Xenon Projectors.

Well there is a beautiful stretch of road that has been opened for the public about 6-8 months back in Mumbai known as the Eastern Freeway. It is a direct road for those people who want to go directly from Chembur to CST(VT) and just one opening in between for Wadala. This road is only open to Private vehicles,Taxi and certain government buses only. The length of this stretch is around 13.5-14 kms. The travel time now from Chembur to VT is around 15 mins which earlier use to take about 45 mins by the old road in normal conditions.

I use this road everyday for going to office and has reduced my travel time drastically. i usually get an average of 17-18 km/ltr on this stretch at the speeds of around 110-120km/hr and around 20 km/ltr at the speed of 70-80 km/hr. But last week just for the sake of personal information i drove the car at a constant speed of 50km/hr on the whole stretch of 14 kms. I dont know the exact reason but the Polo TDi has 2 red markings on the speedometer at around 30km/hr and 50km/hr. The result what i got after the run is as below

IMG_20140524_191656_reduced.JPG

I know the result is really good. But in reality this cant be done on an every day basis, it was just done for experimenting and the best speed to cruise on this road and get a good average is around 70-80 Km/Hr.

Hi Sandy,

Your POLO is Fabulastic...
Suuuper Coool from the front angle.
I would prefer those black alloys as it could improve the side views (My personal opinion).
Over all it is an eye catching Mod Bro.

Thanks a lot for the appreciation bro. I did have the black alloys in mind but unfortunately they were not going well with the car (Personal Opinion). Also the design with black were not good and very few choices as few people go for black hence less stock. The picture i had posted if i would have found something like that would have surely put it. But the Alloy people around me and in my circle never had it so finally went for these. But the Brio in you DP looks hot with black alloys.

Damn Sandy. That is phenomenal mileage you got there. But I cannot imagine driving at a constant 50kmph for 14 kilometers. He he.
The 1.2 TDI engine gives good mileage even when she is thrashed. My car is redlined frequently and still returns good mileage unlike the 1.6/2.0 TDI which is very sensitive to throtle input.
The good thing about the TDI motors is that they are very rev-friendly and revs much more than the Multijet engine resulting in revving the engine being not a waste.

I know i was feeling like a maniac driving at that speed when even a nano guy was smiling past me. It was just a test run. I agree with you, unlike the other diesel engines the TDi is very revv friendly and easily goes to the redline without any fuss and waste of acceleration. I also agree with the fact that no matter how hard you drive the Polo 1.2 TDi it returns a decent average of 15-16 kmpl which surely the elder brothers dont but yes at the same speed of say 120-130 the elder siblings will give almost similar to the 1.2 tdi as they are not being strained in comparison to the 1.2.

Its pretty bad to hear that you might be departing from your polo. The GT TSi should serve a great replacement, but again i feel that you family might not like to replace a polo with a polo.

Exhaust note is good. Like you said it's faint and can be heard only at high revs. Any performance mods you are planning? Like an ECU piggyback? Or CAI?

Earlier i was planning for a Remap but unfortunately there is no remap available yet for the TDi engines. About the ECU piggyback/Tuning boxes, it does give a significant output variation but in short it is fooling the stock ECU by telling it to supply more fuel which in the end results in smoking. As of now i have not even 0.1% of smoking issues and dont want to create any. About the CAI i had read on one of the forum not a CAI but a short RAM intake done on the Skoda Fabia 1.2 TDI. The guy had to remove the stock air filter box and do up the whole new setting. Earlier he faced issues of heating but later had to build a covering around the filter to prevent it from heat. The guy only got a noticeable difference in his performance but the turbo whistle was now visible clearly.

The thing with diesel and specially German diesels is that they are too complicated(My opinion) and tampering may cause problems. The best thing for tune up is a petrol vehicle. In fact i have even mentioned earlier or may be in one of VipinLJ's thread that as of now i am done with the mods for the polo for the time being as my future plan is to get hands on the Skoda Laura Tsi/VRS and build it up nicely to silent beast which is able to at least eat up the cars pricing upto 35lacs whenever i want it to.
