Re: The Mighty Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Drives In [10K Kms Crossed]

Fantastic, I envy you ! Where are the pics though and how about a travelogue ?
I, very frankly, do not have the patience to write a travelogue. However, here are a few pictures.

1) tak-tak sound when steering left - it could be a CV joint, something could have hit it and you would have never known - get it checked.
It was the front suspension lower arm mounting. While the ASC told me that they had fixed it, it reappeared within 4kms of me driving Chetak after the service. [frustration]

However, it was fixed within 15 minutes at my friend's Bosch Car Care Centre at Gurgaon.[clap]

2) Regarding Pajero Sport FE I have done many experiments :- The AC is an absolute guzzler, it has 1-2kmpl FE impact. Also the Sport returns better efficiency in city than on highways especially if you are driving over a speed of 85kmph (odo). i consistently get a FE of over 12kmpl on full tank to full tank - knowing the above and not exceeding 90kmph which doesnt come easy!
With the kind of distances I do, holding anything less than 120kmph on 4 laners will mean very slow progress. However, as long as I get anything on the right side of 10kmpl, I am happy. I rarely drive within the city and I too measure the FE using the tankful to tankful method only.

3) Brake pad wear is a known issue with Pajero Sport, it has high wear and cost of pads in india are higher while importing it seems cheaper. I have heard owners having to replacing brake pads in under 10k kms - though mine is much better off last time i checked - I will figure out how much they last with my sober use.
Yeah, the service centre told me that the average brake pad life for the PS is between 15-20k kms and they cost INR 11000.00 for a set of 4 and this is definitely expensive.

Fabulous pics, Chetak looks phenomenal.

I think your problems stem also from the inefficiencies of the ASC. Btw i fully agree on your comment on wheel alignment, this thing hardly needs any alignment, i am nearing 12k as well , and been thinking of doing alignment, but really see no symptoms whatsoever.

You should get the cruise control mod done - its immensely useful on long highway drives

Screw the symptoms, get it done. Rotating the tyres alone may give you 4000-5000 kms extra tread life; so, as Confucious said: "While rotating, do alignment nevertheless."

Amen.

Well, I am back at Gurgaon and came here today morning since a dear friend passed away and I had to drive back from Rewa where I was en route to Bangalore. Chetak now seems to pull slightly to the left and I will have that checked and the wheels rotated at a friend's tire showroom here.

That apart, he has developed three very distinct rattles/sounds which need to be fixed.
1. The centre console housing the sound system goes kit-kit kat-kat even on slight potholes and bumps.

2. There is clear sound of rubber brushing against metal near my (driver's right ear) when Chetak goes over bad patches.

3. There is a slight squeak somewhere near the front passenger area.

You should get the cruise control mod done - its immensely useful on long highway drives
I am willing to get it done or rather do it myself, however, I m skeptical about ordering parts online since I ve never done it before. Do you think you can order a set for me? I will pick it up when I come to Pune next or we can do a DIY together.

I need to get the MID fitted too at Pethkar and will do that on my next trip to Pune.

Beautiful pictures. Had done Leh / Ladakh but this appear more colourful [:)].

Still I say, do try travelogue. It is always in our mind. We just fear that we would not be able to justify or properly describe the beauty of tourist spots as we perceived. I recently tried first time, & to be frank, I am happy I tried it ( I had tried looking at else doing it - though in much better way).

The itch to join this thread & forum was there with me from the time this thread started. Firstly " A BIG THANK YOU" to IRON Marshall for starting this and the time could not have been better. It started on 27th Jan 2014 and I made the first payment to book my PAJERO SPORT. I have been regularly reading this thread for the last 6 months and today the urge became a reality. Reading about Chetak's travel to Ladakh was the icing on the cake. I am planning to do this next year

Snapshot of the "Beast" for the Last 6 months:

test drive involved climbing a 70 degree incline using 4L (in reverse also)

I was concerned about the stability of the car at high speeds hence during test drive drove it at 140+ on 4WD and checked the braking. fantastic

So far driven 8000 kms odd, car gone for 6 months service(filled normal oil). small accident that damaged the intercooler(cost of 65K). had to use insurance. driven to kerala & back roughly 1700 kms. chikmaglur & wayanad. Wayanad is special because last year had gone there in my innova. One has to drive 4 kms up to an estate. the road is just loose gravel & with rains the innova was skidding like crazy. this time slightly better condition still put my "BEAST" on 4WD and it was awesome. My friend was in his XUV 500 and he did feel the slip at certain places. So far just awesome. had done the test drive for Fortuner. great car but heart was with PS & IRON ROCK's thread just convinced me that i am making the right decision. The best part about PS is its stability at high speeds(i generally put it on 4WD) post 130-140 and it sticks to the road like GUM.

Attaching some snaps of the climb of 70 degree incline.

Do you feel instability at 130-140 speed in 2WD mode? I think it should be rock stable in 2WD mode at that or even high speed if road condition is dry & excellent. Even I had experienced through stability during my TD, albeit not able to drive >120 kmph speed.

BTW, congrates for the beast & wish you many happy & safe miles ahead.

It is rock stable in 2WD in dry road conditions. I generally use the 4WD for high speeds (140+) & curves on the road. It just gives extra confidence on the turns. Felt this while coming from Madurai to Bangalore. Roads are excellent with lot of flyovers but they keep turning. So you climb the flyover at a particular speed and can maintain the speed without slowing down on the turns. The car is extremely stable though after doing a few like this i reduced the speed just to be safe. Thanks for your best wishes.

I suggest you wait for a little bit, as the automatic sport will have this component as standard, getting the spare in india itself shouldnt be an issue, Infact the mumbai dealer already has this + the system is same as the one in outlander, so you might not need to import this like i had to.

Fantastic When i bought the Pajero Sport and wrote in the ownership review, i thought no one would be interested as this thing hardly sells[lol] !

But now we have 3 Sport owners(all 3 different colors) already on the forum, your white elephant looks majestic. Hearty Congratulations and glad the thread helped you, we need more pcitures and preferably an ownership review itself - that way we can share lot of notes.

Fantastic pictures , we need more & more! The Sport really gives the confidence to go anywhere and also come back one piece! I had rallyed this offroad before i put my money on it - so knew exactly what you mean by the stability and poise both on and off the road.
Once again a very warm welcome to the forum.

I wanted to attach some videos but size is a constraint. Some capability testing of the BEAST after i bought it. The guys from the dealer have been very nice so far. I was going to kerala and wanted to be doubly sure how to use the differential locks if required. We did some spinning as well as going up and down a 70 degree incline. I would do the ownership review during this weekend.

Also a small question to Iron Rock & Chetak? I filled up the normal oil on my 6 months service. I checked with the people at the showroom and they asked me about my usage(7800 kms in 6 months) and said that normal oil should do. Any thoughts?

You have to upload videos to Youtube & then post links here, so I don't think any size can be constraint. Anyway in case it is constraint of youtube, you can always split up the videos & post.

We eagerly awaiting the videos.

Differential locks , err I guess you mean centre differential lock right, our desi version does not have the rear lockers that come in the sa version, though off course after market available.

Sir if you had asked me for oil even for a used cheap car I would have suggested synthetic oil, for the pajero sport I will go for synthetic all the way - the engine will be much happy with that. It's expensive but worth in the longer run.

Btw I am currently doing some experiments with different fuel grades, I noticed however the sport loves shell premium diesel, early to say will do some tankfuls with or without and then post.
