mega compact sedan comparo

TATA ZEST

What we like:

• India's first diesel-automatic in the C1 segment. Affordable, convenient & low running costs

• Build quality, fit and finish are on par with competitors. Tata has made significant improvements

• Spacious well-designed interiors & comfortable seats. A rare compact sedan that can seat 5 adults

• 1.2L turbo-petrol has class-leading torque and impressive low-end driveability

• Balanced suspension offers compliant ride quality mated to neutral handling. Nice EPS too

• Light controls, agreeable ergonomics and good refinement. Drives like no mass market Tata car has before

• Features: 3-driving modes (petrol), LED DRLs, projector headlamps, 5" touchscreen, parking sensors, voice commands & more

What we won't like:

• When driven hard, the AMT can't match the smoothness & shift-times of a conventional automatic

• Turbo-petrol lacks mid-range punch and fails to excite at higher rpms. Not to an enthusiast's tastes

• Poor in-cabin storage (narrow door pockets, no 1-liter bottle holder, missing seatback pockets etc.)

• Thick A-Pillars create severe blind spots while driving

• Missing niceties (rear seat armrest, dead pedal, seatbelt height adjustment, boot lid cladding)

• Concerns over long-term reliability & durability. Previous Tata cars haven't fared well in this area

• Tata's sub-par after-sales service quality is far from that of Maruti, Hyundai and Honda

MARUTI DZIRE

What we like:

• Priced lower than the outgoing Dzire. Noticeably better in most areas (quality, comfort, interiors etc.)

• Competent engine range. Very refined motors

• Absorbent ride quality, even over rough roads. Neutral road manners too

• Terrific fuel efficiency, especially from the diesel

• Effortless to drive in the city; light steering, clutch and gearshift. Automatic transmission available

• Maruti’s excellent after-sales service & wide dealer network

What we won’t like:

• Oddball boot design. Side profile looks particularly awkward

• Small 316L boot & no folding rear seat either. Limited practicality

• Mediocre brakes (LXi / LDi & VXi / VDi), just like the mechanically-identical Swift

• Limited rear seat space is incomparable to the Manza, Etios, Verito et al

• Hefty 1.2 lakh premium for the Automatic transmission variant

Honda Amaze

What we like:

• An all-rounded compact sedan that does most things well

• Packaging brilliance. Roomier backseat than the Dzire, and a larger 400 Liter boot

• 1.5L i-DTEC engine offers segment-best power & performance. Excellent driveability too

• Diesel's 25.8 kpl ARAI fuel economy rating

• Light controls, slick gearshift and easy maneuverability for in-city commuting. AT gearbox available

• Honda's reliability & fuss-free ownership experience

What we won't like:

• Diesel's NVH is a full level poorer than the refined Maruti Dzire

• Brio's unconventional dashboard is too basic for this class of car

• Not as dynamically accomplished as the Ford Fiesta Classic, Toyota Etios and others

• Diesel isn't as high-rpm friendly as the 1.3L MJD

• Many practical features missing (climate control, seat-belt height adjustment, adjustable neck restraints, auto-locking doors, full MID, folding rear seat etc.)

Hyundai Xcent

What we like:

• All-rounded package in a contemporary design

• Interiors have best-in-class fit, finish & quality. Accommodating 407 liter boot too

• Fuel-efficient, practical diesel & peppy petrol. Smooth gearbox

• Loaded with features (keyless start & go, reversing camera, rear air-con, cooled glovebox etc.)

• Comfortable ride quality and predictable handling

• Hyundai's fuss free ownership experience & excellent after-sales service

What you won't:

• 1.1L 3-cylinder diesel lacks the top-end punch of competition. Ordinary highway
performance

• Steering & dynamics aren't to an enthusiast's tastes

• Narrow width makes it more suited as a 4 seater, rather than 5

• Boot aside, the premium i20 is closely priced with more power, space, equipment & refinement

• Adjustable front neck restraints, seat-belt height adjustment, full MID, auto-locking doors & dead pedal missing

Revotron is based on the Xeta block and it is very much reliable. Now only a small turbo is added. Hence not much problematic scenario here. Jettasam, you are mistaken b/w QJDs and Revotrons.
I guess Revotron is a completely new unit build from the scratch. I mean, if I am not wrong then even bore and stroke is also different for this engine along with the compression ratio - which makes for a completely new unit.

Hybrid turbo charger in QJD/Revotron..!! Not at all.
That cartoq report was published way before launch. I don't think Aria 2014 uses this hybrid-turbo in any way..!![:)]
Aria is using nothing but the same thing with slight tweaks. Hybrid turbocharger(based on supercharging using an electric motor) is something whose application is easily said than done.

we all generally know that regular turbo charges are spins their on way means required amount of pressure is entered into turbo chamber then turbo booster boosting more power into engine but in the mean time feels the turbo lag in lower RPM so to eliminate this turbo lag an electronically operated motors starts rotating the turbo spinned to minimize the lag
And when the turbo(turbine) runs on its own(exhaust gasses), then doesn't the motor offers resistance to its revolution and hence cut the speed of the turbine?

i guess that Revotron motor using this type of turbo unit and all new retuned varicor engine using this type turbo tata officially said too
Where they announced it? This thing is partially based on supercharging and hence would have killed the turbo lag.

go to tatazest official website you will find their about electronic turbo charger(hybrid)

link:Tata Zest Powerful Revotron Engine
Where is written that Zest is having a turbocharger that runs electrically and then on exhaust? I guess they are calling an engine which is electronically controlled as electronic - turbocharged engine!

From different online forums and automobile magazines it is clear that maruti is planning for face lifted swift and dezire for the festive season. Now my biggest fear is, if Maruti couples the AMT with DDIs engine in face lifted swift and dezire, what will be the fate of AMT Zest and bolt

I am confused. The supercharger and turbocharger differ in the power source..suprrcharger from electrical source and turbo from exhaust.. not sure what electronic turbo charger is[confused]

When two turbochargers works together to pump exhaust gas into a combustion chamber then we considered as supercharger or twin turbo charger and coming back to electronic turbochargers their are two types in it

1st one is (hybrid) turbocharger this type of turbo charger works like supercharger that means both electronic turbo (this turbo rotates using battery power source) and manual turbo(this turbo spins using exhaust gas force) spins at a time to produce maximum power output from engine.

2nd one is electronic turbo charger in this the electronic turbo starts it's action when when turbo lag takes place in manual turbo

Supercharger from the battery??.

-Well supercharger is a forced induction system that works of the flywheel. When the engine is switched on the belts connected to the engine flywheel spins the turbine, which helps compress the intake air. The benefits in this system is that therz no lag as there is in the turbo engines. But the downside is that power of the engine itself is used to generate extra power. Cannibalizing?

-Turbo Charger uses the exhaust gas from the engine to spin the turbine to compress the intake air. The benefit of this is that there is no cannibalizing. But the downside is that, depending on the design, untill a certain rpm level the turbo cannot produce enough boost hence the turbo lag.

Now coming to the hybrid turbo charger that TATA is talking about. Its not a supercharger and turbocharger combined into one. What TATA is saying is that they will use a small electrical system (motor) to spin the turbo during the turbolag phase. They are saying "supercharger effect". This is to nullify the turbolag and the sluggishness as the result.

finally we test driven TATA ZEST today [:D]

whats great to me

> Superb Paint Quality with cool looks

> engine responce is so smooth we do not hear engine noise after crossing 100KMPH actually we doesnot feel that car is cruzing at that speed cabin is so silent

> Harman Music system is really Awsome best in its class

> Steering is easy to handle and smooth its much better then Maruti D-Zire

> Seats are Confortable and Spacious

> Pickup is Okay just like d-zire we need to work on higher gears to go quik highers speeds

What i dont like

> Door pads are doesnt match to premium looking dashboard tata should work on this

> Some Features are missing like Rear Arm Rest, Reverse Camera Auto Fold ORVM's,Push to Start and Smart key Obsence of these features some people go for Hyundai Xcent [frustration]

> when we look at from rear angle the car looks like really small just like toy car

Finally one word i can say TATA ZEST is best and better then Maruti D-zire in each and every aspect [cheers]
