Re: Tata Zest Revotron XT - Newest Member of Our Family

Dear mail2gsyadav, Its really good to see your encouraging fuel efficiency figures. I have booked my car with KB Motors, Kolkata. Last Saturday, I have taken a mileage test from them. It was arranged without any hassle, probably because I agreed to pay for the fuel. I drove the car on afternoon city roads, started around 3.00 pm. 4 persons including me was in the car. The car came to my house with full tank from the dealership. The car then reads 12 kms. I made it full tank again and it consumed 0.5 liters of petrol upto auto lock. Then, I reset the meter after full tank to zero and started to drive. I drove the car for 37.7 kms, among of which 10 kms was on relatively free roads (EM Bypass). I used the CITY mode for 80% and the ECO mode for 20% of the driving time. AC was on for all the time, however I switched off the car at traffic red signals. Temperature was 23.5 degree C and fan speed was 1. At the end of the journey, I made the car full tank again from the same fuel station and 3.5 liters of petrol was consumed. That reads the mileage as 10.77 kmpl. I maintained light foot on the accelerator pedal. The engine rpm never crossed 1500 for the entire period of time, mostly it remains within 1000 rpm. Its worth mentioning here, that my 11 years old Maruti Zen now delivers 15.5 kmpl on the same roads with 30 % use of AC. Do I need to modify my driving habits to have better FE from the Zest. Please help me.

10.77 KMPL is not bad considering 80% CITY mode. Driving within city, you have to apply brakes lot many times. Considering the weight of Zest, it will need more fuel while starting from 0.

Do not restrict the engine too much to be within 1000 rpm. I would say, stick to the gear shift suggestion.

Thanks for your feedback. I was expecting atleast 1 kmpl more, considering you obtained 12-13 kmpl in city driving. Do you suggest to use ECO mode always to have more better FE from Zest.

I obtained 12-13 in ECO mode. I am using ECO mode because of run-in period. I will switch to City mode after it because ECO mode is too sedate in City. Sometimes, I feel need of sudden power to takeover.

ECO mode can be left for long open stretches where you can drive as per your wish not others'.

But don't you think that Zest delivers lot lesser mileage than the competition. The swift dezire and Xcent delivers better mileage than the zest. I took the mileage test on a test drive car which was three months old and 2600 kms driven. However, that car was not serviced once. I think it's mileage will remain like this in City mode. One cannot drive the car regularly using ECO mode. Considering the current petrol prices, one can't ignore the mileage of a car. It may not be as great as maruti, but it should be decent atleast. The Zest mileage in petrol is not very decent. I doubt the mileage will improve greater than 11.

You mentioned 0.5 litre petrol for 12 km from dealer to your home..?? Isn't that good ?
Un-serviced car, one cannot expect the actual mileage in such a car. Rest is your decision.[:)]

Let me tell you if you are convinced about Xcent, no one can force you to buy Zest.

However, if you are still comparing Zest vs Xcent, lines below may help you.

I am sure that Zest mileage will improve as TD vehicle was not yet serviced once.

Let's assume Zest delivers 12KMPL and Xcent 14KMPL. If monthly running is 1000KMs, Zest will drink 83.33 ltrs and Xcent 71.43 ltrs. Additional 12 ltrs will cost you Rs. 850 extra per month, in Kolkata.

Now, if you compare Zest XT and Xcent SX(O), it'll take more than 5.5 years for you to recover Rs 55K Ex-showroom (Kolkata) price difference. And more than 11 yrs for Zest XMS vs Xcent SX(O).

Below are some facts that work against Zest for FE.

1. Zest has 90PS compared to 82PS of Xcent.
2. Zest is approx. 100 kg heavier than Xcent.
3. Zest has 185/60 R15 compared to 175/60 R15 of Xcent.

Aprt from these I preferred Zest over Xcent because:

1. Zest has more road presence than Xcent
2. DRL, Projector Headlamps are Segment first for Zest
3. Xcent can't match HK Music experience.
4. Rear seat can accomodate 3 easily.

...I am tired after writing this much. Let me know if you are still confused.

Dear jagrover,

Hope you are not expecting petrol Zest to deliver 24 kmpl, which is even greater than its diesel counterpart. That may make Tata Motors shy. Sorry just kidding. [:)]. The showroom is 12 kms away from my house. Since I asked for a mileage test, the dealer wish to compensate for the extra fuel needed for this 12 kms and filled more than auto lock. But, in order to have correct measurement, I filled the car again, but this time, upto auto lock only.

Dear mail2gsyadav and kbase,

Thank you very much for your effort. It really helps. One thing is clear to me, that If I buy a car now, that definitely will be the Zest XMS RT. I just expected a little better mileage from the car. 12 kmpl will be the icing on the cake. If I do not compare the mileage, then the Xcent and Dezire is not a competition to the Zest.

I just hope that the car delivers 1 kmpl more in long run. Nothing, but for the mental satisfaction.

Yes. The car has been booked with KB Motors, Kolkata. Can't remember the exact date now, but apparently two weeks ago
Still, no sign of the car. Moreover, sales person did not committed any probable delivery date against continuous requests. Don't know how much I have to wait.

The strange sound I mentioned above is actually difference in vibration pattern when engine is idelling, one could feel it if not listen. Another one is creaky sound from window/door, the suspensions are noisy/ bumpy too. These apart shez going good.Driven her for 1550 km, the kpl reads 15.2

Hello Vaibhav,

I took delivery of my Tata Zest RT XT yesterday night and yes the car is good.

Accessories I have opted are :

Bumper Protectors
Mud Flaps
Carpets(Welcome Kit within TATA group)
Mood Light
Garmin GPS
Rear parking sensor with Camera
Head rests(Welcome Kit within TATA group)
Cushions(Welcome Kit within TATA group)
Leather Seats
Rubber beading
Perfume(Welcome Kit within TATA group)
Still waiting for GPS and decision pending on rear view camera or the same on IRVM.

If you ask me, go with TATA accessories if you are getting a Welcome kit as you get them for free. If you ask about quality, they are fine not so great.
