Re: Tata Tiago Petrol XZ - A Layman's Review

Apart from FE, I have noticed 2 small things:
I just wanted to check speed, touched 130+ (bit frightened to do, only once though), but I noticed horrible vibrations after 110-120 as if car would blast and go into pieces, never tried to cross 100 after that :)

One more issue sometimes when I unlock car, the lock liver comes out completely.

anyone noticed these??

Please suggest what things I need to keep in mind for 2nd service (due shortly)

Thank you in advance
Thanks for clarifying Murali. The unlock lever (pull-pin) is one of the weak links of this car and many owners have this issue, it just pops out of the door panel. Please get it repaired by TASS under warranty. You can also use the door open handle on driver side to unlock all doors by pulling it slightly towards you.

Hello Prabhagar sir,

Yes, I have been checking all the time for re-fuels, but did not log recently as I feel its not necessary now. I used to log initially for each and every re-fuel, but FE was consistent and I felt no need to note it now (I am fixed at 18-19 actual FE with overall conditions and quite happy).

I can clearly say now, my Tiago is giving consistent FE, but yes it varies depending on driving conditions. City is lot worse because my area (Hyderabad) traffic is horrible these days and its always bumper to bumper traffic. My overall readings can be assumed as 50% highways, 30% full BTB traffic, and 20% average traffic. In city driving AC always on (overall 50% AC on long run).

Highways give around 24-25 without AC, 21-22 with AC as per MID (80-100 speed) whereas city (don't ask) varies a lot depending on traffic, I got as low as 8-9 to as high as 14-15.

One more thing to add, car is loaded with full 4-5 seating more than 70% of time and Eco mode almost 90%.

Considering all of these facts, I got these FEs

Apart from FE, I have noticed 2 small things:

You could get the wheels checked for balancing. Mostly the vibrations come when the balancing is off. The door lock opens as soon as you open the drivers door. Otherwise when you pull out the ignition key the door unlocks. You should not need to use the door lock knobs.

Just sharing my initial experience on FE which might interest owners or potential buyers. My new ZX has done around 1020 km in one month. I have been driving within the limits prescribed i.e. 20-240-60-80-100 in 1st to 5th gear respectively. This happens on level road at around 2250 rpm to 2350 rpm. So far my overall FE is 17.3 km/l. In the last tank fill I got 17.6 km/l when the MID showed 18.3 km/l. This shows that the MID is reasonably accurate. I have been driving in Delhi traffic with AC on about 20% of the time. Most of the time I am in 3rd gear which is the most convenient and pulls from 15 km/hr to 60 km/hr comfortably. Normally music systems have equalizer or tone controls to adjust for the accoustics of the car interior so it sound like natural live sound. Unfortunately, many of us have a liking for a feeling in the pit of our stomach that comes from massive overuse of bass. It is a personal thing but the car is not designed to provide a rigid enough enclosure for accurate production of this amount of bass. Hence, you will get a distorted sound and could even damage the speaker or loosen it permanently from its moorings in the door enclosure. Tweeters are less of a problem so put them as high as you like.

Since, I bought my car in October the sales process is better and people are well trained now. I will know about the service quality when I go for the first service. I have owned cars for over 50 years so you can be sure I am very discerning about these things. In fact with the old Fiats/Ambassadors most of the repairs were carried out at home or with a friends help barring a complete overhaul of the engine!

The review in this post is excellent and I must commend the owner for taking the time to give so much detail and proof of the performance and problems. I have written a detailed review in Team-BHP as I didn't know about this forum.

@ashok thanks for FE clarification. I was really scared after reading Mukeshus' 8-10 figures. But anyways in Bangalore traffic anything is possible and 10 with constant AC is ironically good here.

Thank you Ashok,

Yes, I will get wheels balance as I have had doubt with it since 1st service (did not do then due to absence of technician).

My issue with door knob is when I am using remote from outside, knob comes out though not always. Yes, I am using driver door when inside. Anyhow, I will check this also with 2nd service.

My question was anything needed regularly to be taken care of in the 2nd service apart from these small issues... like ECU update, coz they did not do ECU update in 1st service stating it was up-to-date then (July)/anything else that I need to look.

Another thing I noticed yesterday that with full 5 adults at 5 am drove 20 km, chill outside 10-15 deg, everything fine until then... but came up with an uphill, I needed to go in 1st gear (wonder) in city mode... 2nd gear, I felt like huge drop in power all of a sudden from 1st to 2nd, as if I put gear lever in 4th by mistakenly instead of 2nd, but NO its is 2nd gear only... is it due to cool outside?? whereas I could go in 3rd gear the same in normal conditions....

Thank you

Thank you ashokabs, your appreciation means a lot to me [:)]. I have read your Team-BHP review soon after it went live. It was a great read for the less auto nuts like me (hopefully I will catch up soon). My car is close to 7K on the ODO and it has already bonded with me. I hope to keep this thread active for as long as I own it.

I have experienced this in my Civic AT (was abroad at the time). Added a 10" sub in the boot and the rear plastic panel (behind seat) lost its glue and started rattling in less than a month. Lesson learned!

Several Bangalore owners that I know of had reported similar city figures. No wonder why Bangalore is notorious for its traffic (never been there yet). Being in a tier 2 city, I can easily get 15 on the MID here in Coimbatore.

Hi Prabhagar

I have purchased TIAGO in the month of May 2016. I am facing a problem to get the frequent info from TATA about the part updation or the ECU updation etc. Can you please give some idea how to get those updates on time

Hi Prabhagar,
Can you add me as well to the whatsapp group?
Also, I have observed some judder esp. during stop and go traffic in 1st and 2nd gears. I'm a new driver but have previously driven Santro as well but didn't face any such issue in that so not sure if that's because of my bad footwork with the clutch.

Hi Rautela,
Even I had the same issue in first gear and later learnt Tiago needs a bit more throttle for a smoother takeoff. Try hitting 1500 RPM (no passengers on board) in first gear before releasing clutch pedal. For second gear, I would recommend up-shifting at or above 2200 RPM so that you have enough momentum to pull forward.

Ok, I generally only release the clutch and don't push the accelerator in case of an even road.[surprise]

All cars in October and November would already have the ECU update. If the engine vibration is low and gear knob vibrates slightly when you hold the gear knob then it is okay.

[Also, I have observed some judder esp. during stop and go traffic in 1st and 2nd gears. I'm a new driver but have previously driven Santro as well but didn't face any such issue in that so not sure if that's because of my bad footwork with the clutch.]

This is a problem. I tried not accelerating at all when releasing the clutch in 1st gear and it seems to work most of the time. The problem is faced more when in traffic and one has to do this every few seconds. Suggest you raise it with the Service Agent when you take it next to the Tata Service Centre.

[Another thing I noticed yesterday that with full 5 adults at 5 am drove 20 km, chill outside 10-15 deg, everything fine until then... but came up with an uphill, I needed to go in 1st gear (wonder) in city mode... 2nd gear, I felt like huge drop in power all of a sudden from 1st to 2nd, as if I put gear lever in 4th by mistakenly instead of 2nd, but NO its is 2nd gear only... is it due to cool outside?? whereas I could go in 3rd gear the same in normal conditions...]

It depends on how much warming up took place before you reached the uphill section. If the engine is properly warmed up - the temp gauge will show two or more lighted up marks - then it should not happen unless the uphill gradient was quite steep. In that case it is better to drive up in 2nd gear rather than in 3rd and then have to downshift to 2nd on the slope. The car is heavy and moving it uphill or from standstill in a petrol driven engine requires more torque to be generated i.e. more RPMs.

I checked this with couple of Audio accessory shops nearby. Though initially they suggested changing speakers (before listening to audio) later they said damping of doors should suffice as the speakers are good. But one of them asked me to check with Tata as they will be removing the plastic cover inside doors, which might void warranty. And as expected, it was a Yes from Tata saying it will void warranty.

Door rattling at 50% of volume even with Bass set to 0 is purely irritating. More than 90% of rattle comes from rear doors, which is very near to my ear. It completely flushes out the enjoyment. I guess the only option left now is to raise it as complaint during my 1st service and see what Tata can do about this.
When we say 50% volume it only means the volume setting is 50%. The actual output depends on the input signal i.e. the signal from your media player or radio. If the input signal is recorded at lower level then you will find even 50% volume is too low. However, if it is recorded at a high level initially then 50% volume might be too high. Basically, the ears are the best judge for setting the volume. In the car unless you have a dedicated woofer in a super enclosure specially designed for rigidity you cannot expect high bass without rattling the structure of the doors etc.

After 5 months of ownership, I learned Tiago has panic alarm feature . Thanks to Tirupati Bala Singh who found and shared this with fellow owners.

Activate: Press lock and unlock buttons on the remote key simultaneously.
De-Activate: Press any button on the remote key.

I had a very good experience at Concorde Motors, Delhi where their adviser (Gurpreet Singh) who came to deliver the car explained every quirky bit that we would not normally expect including the panic alarm feature or you can use it for location as well - bit noisy though. Of course I was smart and took delivery at home where I had him all to myself with no distractions.

Doorknob problem needs to be checked out during your next visit.

Re: Tata Tiago Petrol XZ - A Layman's Review

Also i have added a complaint of muck accumulating in the petrol inlet area. Which is entering from the rear wheel ARCH area.
I got a call from my TASS for a service feedback and I poked them about the recent fuel inlet pipe replacement that's going rounds in owners' social networking groups. They confirmed my VIN is part of this replacement and I will be called once they receive the spare in their inventory. Note that this does not apply to all Tiago's, just those initial production batches (mine is May manufactured). I believe they are replacing the fuel inlet pipe with a proper seal to prevent mud/muck from entering into fuel cap area.

Re: Tata Tiago Petrol XZ - A Layman's Review

Hi All,

I am new to this community. Looking to own a Tiago.. but have couple of questions in my mind..

Anyone noticed the black box on front passenger footwell area? I feel it kills most of the leg space and also its sharp edges could be harmful. I took Test drive today, car feels awesome in segment. But this black box and the rear passenger headroom is a concern for me. My brother is 6'2", he can't fit properly in rear seat.
In dilemma to choose from Tiago XZ or WagonR VXI(O).. Suggest..

Regards,
Satya
