Safari Storme and XUV5OO - a quick comparison after a TD:-
(Test drive and comparo done by a team of four - two of them are TAI members furtunerx and autosafari)
Safari Storme - VX 4x2
XUV5OO - W8 4x2
TD of XUV5OO for 65 kms in NH8 and a few kms in a village road.
Safari Storme TD done for 26 kms on village roads including a few kms in a state highway.
Showroom/Sales team experience:
Safari Storme:
Its here http://www.theautomotiveindia.com/f...-launch-coverage-pg-322-a-408.html#post231891
XUV5OO:
We can enter the showroom decently like any other showroom where they sell Consumar durables.
There is a reception and Sales executives eager to attend you. (No such feeling like you have gone to a Govt. office of olden times which we felt in a Tata Motors showroom)
Asked for our driving licence and documentation for TD was over in two minutes and TD car arrived in another one minute.
At 3:30 PM, regular SA/SE for XUV was late for his lunch and he requested another guy to accompany us. That was good for us since we could avail a long TD - much more than what they usually allow.
[Mahindra showroom is in Vapi along the NH8. Earlier they politely refused to bring the TD vehicle to our office.]
Impression about Exteriors and looks:
Safari Storme - Storme when seen in person is gigantic with a tremendous road presence. New facia looks butch and better than old generation Safaris.
Looks are impossing and Storme can proudly stand side by side of a Fortuner.
Fit and finish and build quality seems to be excellent.
XUV5OO - XUV does look refined and better built than previous Mahindra vehicles. Still there is a lack of fineness as compared to Storme
Road presence and looks of XUV are not in league of Storme.
Further, we could see some painting flaws in XUV.
Door handles are another let down in XUV.
Interiors:
Safari Storme has a premium feeling in its interiors with excellent fit and finish and generally looking like it is built to last.
The center console of Storme is an eyesore and Mahindra cannot match the stupidity of Tata Motors. Cover that center console with an opaque cloth and everything is fine.
XUV5OO has well built interiors and an excellent eye catchy center console.
Steering of Storme is not looking attractive.
XUV steering is attractive but felt it is small and the plastic cover above the instrument panel looked flimsy and loose fit.
Space, Comfort:
Storme has plenty of space and extremely comfortable seats.
Space in XUV is also sufficient but seats are not that comfortable as Storme.
{Not at all looking at 3rd row in either of them}
Ride Quality:
Ride quality of Storme is superb in all kind of roads.
Potholes are not disturbing the occupants inside.
Ride quality of XUV5OO is far below.
Even in a good smooth road like NH8, we felt that Mahindra has not gone very far from the days of Bolero.
Acceleration, High speed behaviour, Turbo lag, Handling:
We felt that both the engines are of similar caliber.
May be we are not professionals to understand the difference if any between these two.
Handling, acceleration, and turbo lag was almost similar with XUV having a slight edge in acceleration and slightly lesser turbo lag.
A creeching sound while applying brake in XUV is irritating and create a slight panic sometimes. (This TD vehicle was a new one)
Braking is good in both the vehicles but felt that Storme brakes are slightly better.
We cannot compare the highspeed stability because during TD of Storme, we limited ourselves to a max of 90 - 100 kmph due to road conditions.
The Youngest amoung us Manjinder, who surprised us by taking Storme for a spin, shocked us during TD of XUV.
He took the beast (XUV5OO) to its extreme limits without listening to us.
In NH8, he was trying to catch up with a Verna which was going zig zag past those trucks. Heavy traffic did not allow him to race and that verna vanished in no time.
We were asking him to take a u turn at one exit but he saw an empty stretch of road ahead and the speedometer dial touched the 180 mark within seconds.
It was still stable at that speed while going in a straight lane in NH8.
Handling was good in both the vehicles.
Felt that body roll is almost similar.
In Manjinder's NH8 adventure in XUV, we were made to jump, throw around in the middle row where three of us were sitting and churned.
My head banged against the side pillar once. Effect of quick line changing.
Every girder line in fly overs (so many of them in NH8) were making XUV to bounce.
Features:
The stop start feature is interesting in XUV. The moment we stop the car and gear is shifted to neutral, engine stops and it is re started automatically once we engage the gear fully. It is possible only once in one stoppage.
GPS voice assist system though impressive was giving wrong info (may be they have not set it properly)
Cruise control system could not be checked due to the typical indian highway conditions.
There is nothing to talk about the features in Storme (offcourse bluetooth and steering stalk controls are available but overall it is lacking in features)
Since Manjinder was the one who took both the vehicles for a spin, we wanted to take his words. Amoung the two, it was Storme for him which was fun to drive.
