Re: Scoop! New Tata Safari (aka Merlin) To Launch Soon

In the earlier pics of the Merlin, I was actually blown away by the styling.

But now, in the second pic posted by 'S Class', it seems nothing extra ordinary. Infact, it looks more like a facelift of the current safari rather than a new model based on a new chassis. err... "hydroformed" chassis as 'The Xover' always mentions! Same doors, same roof, same pillars...

When TATA was building a new model on an all new platform, it had the liberty to do anything. Why are they continuing with the same 14 year old design? For a common man, this is just a change to the nose, tail lights & dashboard, not justified.

My point exactly, that Safari has a fan following, but that doesn't make it a cult vehicle although it has a cult following (Read: Obsessive).
Safari deserves a fan following, it has got a classic styling that appeals to the heart.

Even I have some pretty nasty experiences but I wont jot it down here as this is not the right thread, we are going OT.

Rather i would not mention it anywhere as the "obsessive" fans would cringe over it. A very knowledgeable and renowned veteran once PMed me that if someone always tries to desperately defend a product or prove that it is the best by defaming others', see it as a act of jealousy rather than anything else.

Re: Scoop! New Tata Safari (aka Merlin) To Launch Soon

First of all, I dont agree Safari is a "lifestyle" or a "cult" vehicle as is projected by fans, sorry.
Who said Safari is a cult vehicle ?? What I said was it is more of lifestyle vehicle coz it is the only UV in its segment which is 5 seater. Essentially, Safari is bought by those who are not interested in number of seats say scorpio, grande, innova etc.

No harm in giving them as an option.
But I am strictly against front facing seat only.
+1. Agree.

I seriously hope & wish that Merlin would not be another Safari saga, instead it should make amends & show us that TATA can make reliable vehicles too.
They have proved themselves by Manza.

I had once travelled in our Safari in the jump seat from Mumbai to Shirdi & trust me, it was horrible. I was along in the boot, so I had both the jump seats to myself but at the end of the trip, my back was gone!
Its not Safari's fault but yours coz you sat on seats which are called as Kids seat. Tomorrow, someone will sit in boot & complain there is no seat at all [lol]. Btw, I can't even sit there coz my head bangs against the roof here.

Ingress eggress to the third row is difficult.

A huge shortcoming for short city commutes with more than 5 people.
Again +1.

^^^ That is also a valid point. But what would be my point is that how often do you carry 7 people on short city commutes? There would be greater chances of the whole family going together on longer trips & there front facing seats would be a boon.
But then, on long trips, you would carry luggage, right ?? Where will you keep it ?? Carrier ??

Well, not necessarily YOU, but I have heard acronyms like lifestyle vehicle, cult vehicle, king, etc for the Safari, which is merely just a tactic by fans to justify it's low sales, IMO.

I would say a Xenon is a lifestyle vehicle, not the Safari.

They have proved themselves by Manza.
To some extent, but then the Merlin is based on the Aria, which has showed some really nasty quality issues.

Buddy, we had a safari from 1998-2002!

Travel light. If its a one day trip or something, we have a couple of soft bags and that easily goes into the nooks & corners, under the seats, etc.

If you have got many bags & you still want to seat 7 in comfort, then the only option is the carrier.

simply fail to understand why tata makes "uninteresting" vehicles - look at the mahindra family. scorpio/ xylo and now the XUV500.Must say tata designers have no clue

I am sorry to say but here Mahindra's design (exception of Scorpio) are more awkward. XUV and Xylo have one of the most weird faces (front). I am a no Tata vs Mahindra guy and generally I am out of this fights but your reply really made me write, Tata have better designs than MM, might be your taste is not so good. [;)]

+1 Tata indeed has better design sense than Mahindra, and right from the erstwhile Estate, Sierra (what a beauty it was), Indica (I like its looks), Manza, Safari, and the bulbuous Aria. Indigo and Marina have been exceptions. In case of Mahindra, Scorpio looks OK, Xylo has been a masterpiece Vinci would have died looking at, XUV has imposing looks but TOO overdone with plastics and bling. Mahindra makes better vehicles but Tata has a better design facility. How I wish my Scorpio was available under Safari's hood!

Buddy, I am not saying anything about ownership or travel issue. I am mentioning the seats, thats all. Be it owned or not, kids seat remains kids seat [glasses].

Definitely +100,weather its a Safari or a Scorpio the third row may be front or side facing(yes, side facing is quite uncomfy)but this third row is meant only for kids.In fact what I believe is that this third row is just a formality, its uncomfy,it lacks space and it compromises boot space too.If you travel long and more than 5 people then luggage is more than enough to accomodate in the boot of SUVs,then what's the true utility of this third row?1 trip out of 20?Yes,it is.[evil]

U dint understand what I meant.

When I wrote that, I meant that I am talking about some 10 years back & then I must be around 15-16 yrs old, so... a kid!

Dont tell me by kids you mean toddlers!

Dont agree. I am 6'2" & have travelled innumerous times in the 3rd row of the Innova (even long trips) & it was decently comfortable. yes, it had a front facing seat & that makes a difference.

Utility of the 3rd row comes into picture, when your whole family wants to travel within city (without luggage). Thats the precise reason it is made foldable.

Even that 1 trip out of 20 makes a difference because it is for that 1 trip, people buy a 7 seater MUV/SUV and not a sedan!

Well, then dear Raj you have a bit lot of flexibility because what I feel is that the third row is really uncomfy and its not for one,but for all.Okay you say that you were comfortable on the third row of Innova, then I have a simple question Have you traveled on hills or broken roads on that third row?If not then try once and you will understand what I mean.

Just think, seven people on board in a Scorp going for a good 1500kms long trip with a lot of luggage too,now you yourself own a Scorpio so I don't need to tell you about the luggage arrangement.Either get a roof carrier or get squeezed with your luggage.

About family travelling together, what I know is if you are four, then my Innova has exactly four seats and if more than four then two cars are better as now you can buy anything as there is a lot of boot space you have to keep your shopping goods(I know these lines are senseless, but this is what I follow,I have a family of two I and my Father and seven seats always look quite useless to me)...:stupid:

^^^

Arre Vipul, not everyone may want to travel in two cars, for different reasons.

I am not saying that the third row seat is 'supremely' comfortable. But all I am saying is front facing third row is far more comfortable & safe than bucket seats, especially on long trips.

Dear Raj,I have already understood what you meant and I have mentioned the same some two-three posts back(saying:front facing are quite more comfy then side facing ones)and I really agree that these front facing are really more comfy then the side facing ones.
