Tata Safari Merlin Uses Aria’s X2 Platform

The Merlin would be the most thorough update brought out by the company for this vehicle since it was launched in 1998. The significant changes brought into the vehicle include the front fascia, interiors and the rear end.

The front fascia sport a more aggressive stance now with a square spaced grille and a pronounced chin with a lip under the bonnet. It also gets projector headlights. The exhausts at the rear get chrome tipped finish. The interiors sport a good amount of wooden finish giving it a much more upmarket feel. The gear lever, on the other hand seems to have undergone no visual change whatsoever. The standard 4 spoke steering wheel can also be seen used in the vehicle which is although devoid of any audio controls. The car is going to be powered by the same 2.2 litre DICOR engine used in the current Safari [frustration] which churns out 140 BHP of power. One of the major changes to the Merlin is the platform. The new Safari Merlin shares the X2 platform of the Tata Aria but it is shortenred by a small amount. The shortening of the wheelbase is bound to increase the car’s handling characteristics. The expected price is going to be around Rs. 11 lakhs.

@raj,

Why be so biased ?? Had this been M & M, you would have gone ga-ga on it.
Please don't comment on complete car without even seeing it on road & experiencing it.

I have seen uncovered pics of merlin(don't ask how[;)]),it looks like a complete monster, agree it won't have the class of current Safari but it would look like a perfect modern vehicle people are looking to buy between 10-14 lakhs.

Really so much frustation only because I praised a tata product,now don't tell me that how can i say it would be fun to drive(since i have not driven it),I give you my reasons:

1.New Safari is based on shortened Aria platform so its a lot lighter than current Safari.(you don't believe this info e mail Hormazd Sorabjee to confirm,his mail ID is editorial@autocar.in)
2.As we all know Aria is a fun to drive car, merlin with lighter weight and same retuned dual mass flywheel engine will be a breeze to drive no doubt.Aria 4x2 reaches 0-100 in 13 seconds as per Overdrive mag.,so new Safari would be even faster, its common sense guru jee and not just conjecture.
3.And don't forget tata own Land Rover not some third grade korean company like its counterpart, so just wait till january,all mahindra fanboys are going to look like this [shock]

Re: Scoop! New Tata Safari (aka Merlin) To Launch Soon

A big hello to all the members,
This is my first post and i also back the statment given by XOver regarding the launch and availabiltiy of New Safari aka Merlin by April or so.

Was test driving the Aria last week and the SA told me to wait till 6th Jan 2012, Tata will be showing its New Safari in Auto Expo and it might be available by MArch or April.

He also added this that The new Safari will eat XUV market share.

Even after such a huge discounts on Safari and ARIA, iam desperately waiting for New Safari from last one year and just keep on postpoing my purchase.

I liked the Aria, but nothing at present in India beats the KILLER LOOKS OF SAFARI.

TATA just sort out the niggles and give us a very good vehicle this time. and also at a competitive price.
