Tata Nano Twist Active Spotted Testing In Pune, Launch In Second Half



Tata Motors will be updating the Nano with the F-Tronic AMT gearbox and a functional boot-lid christened as the Nano Twist Active; two much needed changes on the scantily selling hatchback that were showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo held earlier this year. Now, our reader Obed Daruwala spotted the facelift Nano being tested in Dhankawadi, Pune along with the Punto facelift and the Indigo eCS test mules. The completely camouflaged test mule hides all the major changes on the design front of the Nano Twist Active that was showcased at the Expo.
Changes on the 2015 Tata Nano Twist Active include revised headlamps, new grille design with integrated fog lamps; while the front hood features a new lip finished in glossy black with the Tata logo lending some freshness and a premium appeal to the front fascia of the vehicle. The rear on the other hand gets reworked tail lights, a new bumper design and the functioning boot-lid. The new Twist Active model will also feature a very hot property currently in the automotive market, the new AMT gearbox.



The AMT gearbox will help make the Nano a far more appealing product and will also be the cheapest automatic in the country, undercutting the Maruti Celerio by a significant margin. Apart from the inclusion of the AMT gearbox, the Nano Twist Active is also expected to feature an all-new 3-cylinder engine (displacement around 800cc) that will be tuned to produce around 67 PS of power, when it goes on sale in 2015. Expect the Twist Active to be priced at a premium, compared to the standard models.
The other models on test were the Fiat Punto facelift that will go on sale later this year in the country. The Punto is expected to feature a significantly revised front and rear design, while the interiors will be in-sync with the Linea facelift that was launched last month in the country. The Indigo eCS on the other hand might just see a last update before the Zest compact sedan is launched. Tata could continue selling the Indigo eCS models in the semi-urban and rural cities in the country.
Tata’s major challenge is to make the Nano a far more vibrant and appealing product to the masses. Tata’s new marketing strategy also portrays the Nano as a product for the youth with compact looks. The interiors too have seen some major revisions and now get bright looking beige plastics and upholstery along with features such as EPAS power steering system (launched on the Nano Twist this year), Bluetooth, USB and AUX-in connectivity. Tata says, the company has been working on the Twist Active model after receiving significant feedback from its customers.

Tata Nano was Ratan Tata’s dream to give Indians an affordable and cheap mode of transportation. In one of the interviews preceding the launch, I remember the gentleman describing an incident which could be called as the birth of the Nano Concept.

He said that he had stopped at a traffic signal in his very comfortable S-Class and it was raining heavily. That’s when he noticed a family on a scooter trying hard to fit everyone and yet manage not to fall off! There was a kid standing in the front, the father riding the scooter, and the mother holding a kid in one hand and an umbrella on the other, which wasn’t really helping. Mr. Tata wanted to give an option in which these kind of small families can travel safely, and yet easily afford it.

Unfortunately the Nano did not live up to its expectations, shrouded by the Singur-political controversy and occurrences of models catching fire. Nano has not been able to utilize even half of its production capacity of 20,000 units per month. Tata is also upto it and have decided for a turnaround of the brand by adding a fresh boost of life and making it a more appealing smart city car.

Very recently, they introduced power steering on the car and called it as Nano Twist! Here are three more upcoming variants of Nano which will be launched in our markets soon.

1. Nano Twist Active: One of the earliest criticisms which the Tata Nano faced was the fact that it did not have a power steering even as an option in higher models. Nano Twist resolved the issue with a new Electronic power assisted steering; the instrument panel also went through a makeover. Next up is the Nano Twist Active which will get all the features of Twist and in addition will feature an openable rear-hatch and a larger fuel tank of 24 liters. It also carries some cosmetic enhancements.

2. Nano Twist F-Tronic: Tired of changing gears continuously? The Nano F-Tronic is the solution. The car gets a new Automated Manual Transmission along with all the features of Nano Twist Active. As you must have guessed it already, Nano F-Tronic will go on to become the cheapest automatic car in the country.

3. Nano Plus: There are strong rumours that Tata is making serious efforts to employ a bigger petrol engine on the Nano and the variant could just be called as Nano Plus. The present 624cc 2 pot motor produces a paltry 38PS of power and 51Nm of torque. Nano Plus is expected to get a 3 cylinder 800cc petrol engine.

A more powerful peppy engine on the Nano will definitely help the company make it a more fun to drive city car. There has been no official confirmation regarding Nano Plus from the company’s’s side, but an additional variant up there somewhere will definitely make Nano a more luring buy for customers.

If you were waiting to read Nano Diesel’s name in this list, let us disappoint you that the company has axed the plans to launch it in our markets.

Hopefully these new models will be the necessary catalyst to ensure Tata Nano sells as many units as it deserves.

The Tata Nano Twist Active Concept, shown at the Auto Expo as an action to reposition the poorly selling Nano as a ‘Smart City Car’, was spied testing by Motorbeam.com.

Apart from the openable tailgate and the electric power steering, the Twist Active was given few additional features such as the ‘Humanity Line’ on the grille that is a cornerstone to the company’s new design language, new bonnet trim, graphic on the daylight opening, revised front and rear bumper, sectioned headlight with black bezel, 24-liter fuel tank (15-liter in the present specification), ‘Infinity Motif’ seat cover, new gear lever, paint-coordinated dashboard trim, three-spoke steering wheel, and new aircon vents.

Tata said in the press release that the Twist Active’s design intensifies the youthfulness of the product. At its stand at the Expo, the company had also repackaged the updates with an AMT box dubbed the Tata Nano F-Tronic Concept, that should also realize production in the near future.

Tata continues work on the repositioning of the Nano with technology add-ons, special editions and model year updates, and the Twist Active and the F-Tronic are invaluable variants if the sales turn-around has to be made.

- I bought a Nano twist Active recently on March 2014 and word is that there are changes that we can retrofit openable rear-hatch - Matter of fact, someone from the dealer made a mention that it will be given as an option once the feature is official ~ Is it true?

I'm very new to the forum and i'm curious to get an answer for the following question
- I bought a Nano twist Active recently on March 2014 and word is that there are changes that we can retrofit openable rear-hatch - Matter of fact, someone from the dealer made a mention that it will be given as an option once the feature is official ~ Is it true?

first of all i want to know about your car you bought TATA NANO LX or TATA NANO Twist XT(E-pass version) you said that you bought TATA NANO Twist Active i think Twist Active(openable boot door version) version of NANO is not get launched the just Officially unvieled at AUTO EXPO 2014 but sure they are going to launch soon around sep-aug period and comming back to your questions its not that easy to retrofit openable hatch door becauses its needs some modifications and its spoils the cars fit and finishing levels even may have chances to increans NVH levels of car.

I'm extremely sorry - it's the effect of reading too much about nano roadmap. Let me correct my statement by saying ' I bought a NANO TWIST XT ( released with power-assist)'. Dealer was making a mention about feasibility with existing NANO Twist by cutting and supporting with hydrolic stems. I'm trying to understand if it is truly feasible or it was merely sales presentation

its not truly feasible but if you really want to do this job with your nano twist its workable but we need some modifications to body shell because present nano twist fixed boot hatch door acts rear crumpel zone to get extra strenght to body shell at rear for reference observe below images.


in above image red lined part is gives to extra protection from rear impact


comming back to nano twist active this pretection bar is absent instead of that they made bigger and stronger boot door to provided extra protection so in my opinion technically its possible to fit retrofitment of openable boot


and dont listen TATA Dealers advide because they dont even know about basic thinks about cars specifications its my personal experience

Thanks for explaining in detail - It truly helped me understand what job is required to convert; I'm thinking of leaving it as-is but feel bit disappointed that TATA doesn't provision for retrofit/improvements on their older version of the same model with newer features (Of-course customer will need to accomdate the premium charged for such provisioning)

- I would really loved to have F-tronic on the Twist XT ;-)

Tata to Launch Nano Automatic (F-Tronic) & OTG (Openable Tailgate) Around October - festive season.

Now, it is not known if Tata will club the features of Nano Twist Active into the Nano AMT and launch only a single variant (and continue selling the current Nano Twist) or if both these will be launched as two different variants.
Internally Nano with openable rear tailgate is being referred to as Nano ‘OTG’ (Standing for Openable Tail Gate).

Nano OTG features a larger fuel tank (24L as compared to the usual 15L on current Nano), power steering (which is already offered on the Nano Twist), an openable tailgate which will add the practicality of increasing the utilisation of the rear storage area. Nano F-Tronic must possess all these and in addition get the AMT (Automated Manual Transmission).
Both Nano Twist Active (OTG) and Nano F-Tronic are powered by the same 624cc 2 cylinder petrol engine which churns out 38PS of power output and 51Nm of torque.
