Tata motors get patent for Auto- Start Stop system in Manual Cars

So now you would get cars coming which can be termed microhybrid or fuel savers (Again Segment first coming your way) Great technology i would say.

Tata Motors has secured a patent for its invention regarding an auto stop-start control system for manual transmission vehicles which provides fuel economy with minimal change in driver behaviour.
The desi auto firm claims that the objectives of the present invention are to provide an auto stop-start system for manual transmission vehicles in which an auto stop is prevented from occurring if the engine speed is above the idle speed, and to provide a simple and cost effective vehicle auto stop-start control system.
The company in the patent application submitted that the invention will be a solution to save the fuel wasted when idling at traffic signals by automatically switching off the engine when the vehicle is stopped.
According to a patent document filed by Tata Motors, the auto stop-start control system comprises an electronic controller and an engine starting and stopping system which can start or stop the engine in response to electronic commands.
The electronic controller will have an assembly of digital input blocks for measuring ignition key state, crank position, brake pedal state, clutch pedal state, engine speed and vehicle speed.
Granting the patent, Pinkesh K Jain, assistant controller of patents & designs, Mumbai patent office said: “Having considered the submissions and amendments, I find that amended claims are clearly disclosing the structural components involved in the claimed method. The claimed method involves interaction among the technical means to achieve the technical objective.”
The company submitted that various digital sensors like vehicle speed sensor, engine speed sensor, clutch pedal sensor and brake pedal sensor are interfaced with the digital inputs block of electronic controller and analog sensors like battery voltage sensor and coolant temperature sensor are connected with the analog inputs block of electronic controller. The electronic controller is then interfaced with the engine starting / stopping system.
The digital and analog information obtained by the electronic controller through the digital and analog inputs blocks respectively are first stored in the memory block. Using this stored information from the memory block, the semiconductor device does the necessary processing and accordingly generates the signals for starting or stopping the engine. The engine starting/stopping system starts or stops the engine in response to the said signals. After the vehicle comes to a complete stand-still, the electronic controller checks if the engine is running, if so, the controller checks if the engine speed is at idle speed, Tata Motors said.
In conventional auto stop-start control system for manual transmission vehicles the engine is switched off when the drives engages the neutral gear and release the clutch pedal. However, many drivers, especially in third world countries would like to keep the vehicle stationary while transmission is in gear and the clutch and brake pedals are pressed simultaneously.
The drawback associated with this system is that in such situations, the engine will not be turned off and the driver would get no benefit of the auto stop-start feature, the company said.

Although I went through the article I still couldn't figure out how radically different is it from the conventional start stop system?

What I understood from the last para The system is diffrent as it will work even if the vehicle is in gear and as per patent act each amd every thing in the vehicle/machine need patent before any launch whether its same or diffrent from others

I wouldnt say it could be radically different. Since this system was available on the Scorpio hybrid. However, it being Tata and since they have the patent I anticpate this technology to come into play in all the tata offerings. Again Segment first feature in all the cars. And not restricted to only specific range of vehicles. So it will be a great feature to have in terms of fuel savings. And this is what I am excited about.

Mahindra could have by now perfected that tech and could have made its way from KUV to their top car however, They did not. I think Tata will not do that way.

I had mentioned this in another thread but here it is in today's paper.
And yes this R&D spend is exclusively TATA motors India and does not include JLR's spend.
Heartening to see this from Tata. Tata Motors going all out to regain its lost glory.
I am sure success is just round the corner for them now.

In India, hybrid vehicles are more attractive in the short term: Tim Leverton | Business Standard News

JLR is now doing very well, and one of the things we heard quite early on was that Tata will utilise JLR's technology and skills. Has that happened and at what level?

We've used some of the background technology to support our engine strategy. The new engines, especially the Revotron engines, will use some of the same technologies that JLR developed for its new Ingenium engine family. Over the coming years this will increase, particularly as we go to BS VI and more stringent levels of emissions. But really where we found success is in terms of transferring technology and know-how.

Tata to launch a total of 3 cars in 2016
After the Tiago, new XENON pick up and HEXA are are the launches for this year!
The Xenon will be completely new and use the X2 platform and 2.2 Varicor of the Safari.
There will be an option of Automatic transmission as well![clap]
The new Xenon is expected to launch in July while the Hexa in the festive season.
The Kite 5 and Nexon are supposed to be postponed to early 2017.
The new 2.0 Varicor will be launched next year as well.

Re: The Story of Tata's Epic Journey from Trucks to Aria

Xenon upgrade is quite welcome however, I feel that Tata should have prioritised Hexa over Xenon purely because Hexa even though costlier than xenon has a bigger market. With innova having a free run in the MUV segment I think hexa has to be come to the party to grab its share.

Now since Xenon is being launched before I feel that Tata must be checking for some reusable component on Xenon before they put in Hexa. Thats the only rationale I find for this priority launch of Xenon.

In addition, i do feel that they don't want to lose whatever market Xenon has to ISUZU, and want to grab even more attention. And might be, with more players coming into this pickup segment, the segment demand might see a steep rise and tata having more presence in terms of Service centers will always have an edge over others.

For Hexa, might be TATA would want to make some more improvements in terms of quality or other parts so that when a comparo is done people don't say its a TATA hence poor quality.

If am not wrong Xenon was a product from Tata commercial unit not PV unit and the launch will be accounted in commercial sales then why delay in launch for PV unit or Tata want to test tech ie tramsmission chassis or upgraded engine in Xenon and then introduce in Hexa.

Might be a possibilty that they are going to sell it in PV dealerships this time?

Please understand that TATA is concentrating export market as equal to domestic. Xenon has become a major export vehicle to SE Asia (Indonesia), Austrailia, Latin America and African continents. Though it scored 4 stars in crash tests and has been voted second best Pick-up in Australia, they require to up the ante at regular basis, otherwise they'll become a sitting duck. They have Hexa and NEXON as next launches in Australia and SE Asia. So Xenon is the next important upgrade and Targeting Isuzu D Max should not be the priority in the domestic market as the sales are dismally low.

One thing about the old TATA diesel engines. Which powered the Indica/Indigo. It revs all the way to 5000 rpm and a little more. Although its a waste of fuel as power and tourque comes up very early.
