Tata Motors announces new “IMPACT” design language for future cars

Tata Motors announces new “IMPACT” design language for future cars – IAB Report

Tata-IMPACT-DESIGN-image.jpg

Zica will be the first car to sport this design language.
Tata Motors today announced its new ‘IMPACT’ design language for its future passenger vehicles, and stated that the upcoming Zica will be the first product based on this design language.

IMPACT which stands for “Immediate IMPACT at first sight, Lasting IMPACT over time” is aimed at addressing the design needs of new buyers who, according to Mr. Pratap Bose, Head of design of Tata Motors, form initial opinions of a car’s design within 20 seconds of seeing it.
Tata says that its future cars inspired by the IMPACT design will feature best-in-class size, well-proportioned cabin-to-body ratio and location of wheels. Further, the exterior will see design details inspired by Indian architecture, and Tata’s now characteristic Humanity Line, Slingshot Line and Diamond Window.

Inside, these future cars will sport a driver-centric layout, a layered cockpit design, “outstanding” textures and materials and clever storage spaces. Through its ConnectNext parallel, Tata says occupants will be in-touch to the world inside and outside the car, while all displays, commands and controls will be within easy reach.

According to Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors, “Today, the automakers are developing innovative technologies to cater to the needs of the new generation of customers. Design is among the key factors for car purchase decisions. Tata Motors recognizes this and presents IMPACT Design – as a key focus for the company’s passenger vehicle strategy. The new, youthful, energetic and bold character of the passenger vehicles by Tata Motors is sure to make a lasting impact on our customers and on the Indian roads.”

It is after keeping the media-saturated customer in mind that a new design language had to be created. Something that could break the clutter and reinvent the wheel every time it was applied. And thus, the IMPACT design philosophy was created.

IMPACT Design further distills the design elements that can be expected from all Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles. It will be achieved through key design elements on the Exterior and Interior.

The Exteriors design will be defined through ‘EXciting’, ‘EXpressive’ and ‘EXtraordinary’ features:
Exciting architecture and pleasing proportions will be standard e.g. best in segment size & location of the wheels, perfectly proportioned cabin to body ratio and hood to cabin relationship
Expressive surfaces and graphics e.g. front face framed by the Humanity Line; dynamism amplified by the Slingshot line; movement created by the Diamond Window
Extraordinary: Details inspired by Indian Architecture
The Interior of the vehicle will be defined through ‘INviting’, ‘INtelligent’ and ‘INtouch’ features.
Inviting interior architecture and proportions including Layered Cockpit Design; Driver Focussed layout; Outstanding Textures, Fabrics and Materials
Intelligent Cabin Layout with clever storage spaces, surprise and delight features. All displays, commands and controls will be within easy and intuitive reach
Intouch and connected to the world inside and outside the vehicle
According to Pratap Bose, Head, Design, Tata Motors, “You can either win or lose a potential customer within the first 20 seconds of them seeing a car. However, the customer stays with you based on the long-term experience they have with the product or service. IMPACT DESIGN is exactly about an Immediate and a Lasting Impact, Design has in our lives, and environment. From ‘INtelligent’ use of space, ‘INviting’ interiors and ConnectNext features that make you feel ‘INtouch’ with the world inside to EXpressive, EXciting’, and EXtraordinary exterior features. With the ZICA we have started this journey.”

ZICA truly embodies the IMPACT Design. It distills the fine points of auto design with styling and lines that accentuate modern India and its global citizens. With IMPACT, Tata Motors has taken one step forward in its transformation journey, reaffirming its customer centric approach which in- turn will reinforce the Company’s future in design.

Another post related to Nexon and the design

Tata Motors’ plan of introducing the production Tata Nexon within 24 months of its Auto Expo 2014 showcase is still “more or less” on, Mr. Pratap Bose, Head of design of Tata Motors told Indian Autos Blog.
When asked about the production-ready sub-4m crossover, Mr. Bose said –

We want it to be a show-stopper. It has to be outstanding. We were told that we’re late in getting into that market, but even if we’re late, we’ll redefine this segment. If you look at the market, some take a large product and try to compact it. But we’re not doing that. Right from the beginning we’ve designed it for 3,995 mm. The Nexon will redefine the segment.

Spyshots have shown Nexon prototypes on test, and the overall design appears to closely match the Auto Expo concept. According to Mr. Bose, the production Nexon will “stay true to the concept car”, such that when people see it, they “can’t tell the difference”, he said.

Obviously, the Nexon will ditch its suicide doors favoring conventional hinges, but the designer hinted that the product will look modern and attractive rather than butch and old-school, a design language chosen by some competitors.

Sources say that Tata will showcase a production-ready version at the forthcoming Auto Expo 2016, which is scheduled in the first week of February 2016. However, a launch is expected towards the second half of this year.

Well I am not a designer however what I can see from the current market trend is that there are few cars like
1. Ecosport - drawing inspiration from Evoque - HIT in market
2. KUV100 - which looks very aggressive and has design inputs Range rovers and evoque.
3. Fords car - with open mouth design inspired from Aston martin and Jags

All these above mentioned cars have been proving to be hit cars. This means that people love the timeless evoque and jags and aston martin designs.

Why can tata too copy the evoque design? why to create smooth curvy design instead of the old school aggressive and butch design. SUVs are meant to look butch and aggressive. So are, the pseudo SUV are hit because of their butch look. People want that aggressive look for less cost and creature comforts. This is wat these pseudo SUV offer.
the kwid too has butch look. then why are the tata designers not going for the butch look?

I might be completely off tangent in my analogy probably Bose and Team must have thought of some thing in future but still to my small brain I thing as of now Butch look is the in thing.
KUV's success, I guess will be the one which would prove me correct/incorrect.

TATA has always been an ambitious car maker. From locomotives to the upcoming Hexa, there is an inspirational story.
Sierra was definitely one of the best designs back then. When a lot of UVs were boxy, the Safari stood out.
Back then, quality might not have been at par with the popular japs. Today, you can see how much it has improved from early Indicas to the recently launched Bolt.

People still have a misconception that Tata cars lack quality and it won't last much longer. It is because of the service, specially where I live.
We had a '06 Indigo in the family. It was quite comfortable and very spacious. I didn't like the steering wheel design much and I did feel dashboard plastics were tacky. But that aside, it was a good car at the time for the price.
The problem was poor service offered by the local dealer. Issues unsolved, poor handling and car comes out with new scratches. It was always a horrible experience for the owner. Later, the car was sold off.
A friend had kept his Nano for service recently and again it's the same story!
Some dealerships spoil the company's image.

Anyways, good to see TATA bringing out better products.

This is my rendering of the Nexon. Sorry for posting the same pic in multiple threads.
If the Nexon looks like this, then this will be an absolute winner.
My point is, this design looks quite butch enough, even without straight lines.

To me Impact is an effort towards how the product lure customers rather than design language.

How do they say outstanding features or surprise features where in I don't even see one feature which is out of the box exept colored ac vent outers. Which I don't think it's a feature.

Missed features

Touch screen System?
Back seet AC vents?
Arm rest?
Outstanding mileage figures?
Outstanding power figures?
Six airbags?
What's extraordinary as per the article?

After reading the destination or the article by Tata Motors i found it difficult to take it as design language or they just putting a name to draw attention on the name of design language.

Any thoughts?

When we talk of Zica specifically in that price range only Kwid offers touch screen rest of the hatchbacks are the usual variety. Zica will be a nice package to live with on a day to day basis. Ya its missing Touchscreen audio but it gives outstanding 8 speaker audio with steering mounted controls and an excellent Bluetooth system. Have anybody tried the Zest Bluetooth for calling the other person doesn't even know that you are calling him from a car Bluetooth !
Outstanding mileage will be there in both petrol and diesel further enhanced by multi drive modes which nobody is giving in sub 5 lak car.
Its a small car so instead of back seat AC vents TATA has given a spacious cooled glove box which will be very usefull in our hot and humid climate.
And the minor things like multiple bag hooks in front passenger area and boot sides and Android apps for the audio system are surely differentiating it in the segment.

Here they are referring to the design. Be it exterior or interior. It includes visual elements as well as asthetics. Tata is formulating its own design language. It's Indo-European. Harman ICE itself is a niche feature. What they can do is price it aggressively so that the whole package will become extraordinary.

TataMotorsSmartHub at autoexpo

Tata Motors will show its future designs and concepts with around 25 models. Company's display will be the widest display at the biennial exhibition:

Along with the current range that includes the Tata Bolt, Zest, Tata Safari Storme, and GenX Nano, Tata will also showcase the recently previewed Tata Zica hatchback. As for motor show debuts, Tata will unveil the Indigo eCS-replacing Tata Zica sub-4m sedan (Tata Sway), production-spec Tata Nexon sub-4m SUV and the flagship Tata Hexa crossover.

While the Zica hatchback is expected to launch shortly, the Zica sedan is reported to go on sale in the second half of 2016. The Nexon and Hexa crossovers are rumored to arrive in showrooms following the Zica twins.

For the Auto Expo, Tata Motors is expected to pull out all the stops to make it a grand showcase of Tata Motors’ vision of the future, and garner attention towards the latest product range. According to a Tata spokesperson, the company’s theme for the exhibition is “#TataMotorsSmartHub”, which is derived from the synergy between ‘Smart Technology’ and ‘Smart Products’.
