Re: Reliable Diesel Manza: Unpredictable But Improving TASS (50K Kms Report)

I will escalate the matter , I feel it was poor response from Tatas rather than the TASS, Tatas didn't communicated directly with me about my online complaint.

Also they didn't bothered to call me (as a routine practice they follow after servicing) for feedback of 60kkm service, I feel they want to avoid unpleasant questions from me.
As of now, not possible to call them during office hours.Gear shift is smooth now.

Re: Reliable Diesel Manza: Unpredictable But Improving TASS (50K Kms Report)

Car has done 70,500 km now, On Saturday, it will go for servicing.

1)Clutch has started hardening again.[cry], I couldn't escalate it with higher authorities in Tata s.This time I am going to talk with them before taking the car to ASS. Let's see, fingers crossed.

2)fuel gauze is malfunctioning, the needle points at nadir and the orange light blinks even if the tank is more than 1/4 full.

3) AC cooling is not satisfactory. Initially I thought that it might be due to the severity of summer but now I am sure that there is a problem with the cooling.

4)Driver side switch for left front power window has broken few days back. It broke while pulling it up little harder as the window glass was giving a tight hard feeling while rolling up. This problem was told to ASS @50kkm servicing, they had suggested to replace the switch but I had refused.
Later on @60kkm service, same problem was told but they had suggested replacement of motor and didn't talked about the switch.I had refused the motor replacement as well. However with broken switch the window is functioning absolutely smooth [evil].

Few problems in accessories & ICE.

5)The reverse parking cam LCD screen had fallen off as the sticker strength had reduced due to sun of the summer.
Then it got caught while closing the door in the gap between door & its frame. Since then upper half of the screen is showing white horizontal line hindering the view in the upper half
TAI gers, is it a solvable problem?

Upgraded ICE was functioning normally for few days but then the front component speakers stopped functioning alternately. Initially the problem was limited when AUX was on, The ICE man said it's a problem with my Samsung galaxy grand.
Later on problem started while playing CD & FM also
.So ICE man replaced wires of tweeter as surprisingly they were not replaced at the time of ICE upgrade because they are concealed.
However, this solved the problem only for two days.

Later on, he checked every thing and told me that RCA cable & the AUX cable was malfunctioning & replaced them FOC. Now all is working well.

6) Alarm of the central locking & the reverse has started malfunctioning, sounds without any reason. I have removed its fuse so as to disable it till it is taken to accessory shop where it was installed.

Re: Tata Manza QJD 70,000 Kms Ownership Review (Tata Struggles To Solve Clutch Issue)

Due to unavoidable circumstances, I had to delay the servicing till yesterday.
Yesterday also I had to get only 70000 km servicing done and keep the window lubrication, fuel gauze etc work pending as I had to rush back to the hospital where my mom was admitted unexpectedly.

They started the work immediately. Soon service people told me that there is some noise from the timing chain & needs replacement. I told them to get the 70000 km servicing done now & see if they can delay the chain replacement & hand over me the estimate for the same.
A senior person checked the car & said timing chain replacement can be replaced after 2kkm without any issues.
They gave me the estimate for timing chain replacement, it was as follows.
Timing chain - Rs 1050
Auto tensioner - Rs 660
Timing pad - Rs 1180
Sealent - Rs 600
Anabond tube - Rs 100

OIL pump - Rs 5990
water pump - Rs 3830.
Alternator belt - Rs1700
Adalor - Rs 1400
Auto tensioner - Rs 2400
Total Rs 18,910 taxes & labour extra
My immediate reaction was like doing this as done by fellow TIGER HR http://www.theautomotiveindia.com/forums/ownership-reviews/15699-ta-ta-manza-hello-city.html
I said, why so much? The SA said all the things mentioned are mandatory to replace along with timing chain.
I approached the senior person who said things in bold need not be done and are to be done @100 kkm.
So finally, estimate came down to Rs 3590 (labour, taxes extra).

I paid total charges Rs 4912 for 70k km routine servicing. AC filter was cleaned and cooling was normal however a problem that when air flow was directed towards face simultaneously some air use to leak through foot vents still persists.
Also fuel gauze replacement (Rs 450), power window switch replacement are pending.

At the time of test drive, I told him that I use to get some wobble sensation during braking, he checked it while driving and said one of the rim must be having some 'out ' (change in dimension) and the problem would disappear if rim rotation is performed. And he will get it done at the time of timing chain replacement.
Also he said clutch is OK & not hard as complained by me.

I went through some other forums on the timing chain life & found following things.
MJD engine of Fiat Lineas from initial batches were needing replacement @60 kkm. However this replacement was not mentioned in servicing schedule in the owner's manual . Later on fiat included it as a routine replacement item in the schedule.

Same was true about Manza. Tatas issued a circular to include it from January 14,
To my surprise, I was not informed about it by the TASS @60 kkm servicing.
Vw vento, cruze, etc also needed timing chain replacement @60 to 70 kkm.
As per owner manual Verna CRDI timing chain replacement schedule is @60 kkm
In case of i 20 & xcent, it is 80 kkm.
For Logan it is 60 kkm.

However, for Suzuki swift, Chevy sail (runs on similar MJD/QJD type engine) &Toyota Etios timing chain(as per manual) is immortal. Also Etios comes with immortal fuel filter (doesn't require fuel filter replacement at all vis a vis Manza which requires fuel filter replacement every 20 kkm).

Re: Tata Manza QJD 70,000 Kms Ownership Review (Tata Struggles To Solve Clutch Issue)

whats the real deal with clutch - is it fixed or not ?
Is this tass concorde motors ?

Btw if you intend to keep the vehicle, get timing belt replaced immediately, do not delay it it could cause a catastrophe.

Re: Tata Manza QJD 70,000 Kms Ownership Review (Tata Struggles To Solve Clutch Issue)

I took my car to Phoenix Automobile katraj Pune last Sunday. They provide only ASS & don't sell the cars*

Particulars or name of the work carried out -
1)Timing chain replacement
2)fuel sensor replacement
3) fixing of the rattle from the back of the DIS. .

Car was called at 9:30 AM, however I reached there at 10:30 am, They accepted it & said that it will be delivered back in the evening, however the SA came to me at 12:45 & said that car will be delivered next day evening! I raised my voice till it reached the senior (probably owner), He asked them to do overtime & deliver by 9:30 pm, the SA & mechanic agreed and delivered it at 10pm

Difference in the performance of the car after the work is complete. -
1)Timing chain replacement - the engine firing noise became smooth, also the FE seems to be improved, yet to confirm by tankful to tankful method.
Clutch also feels softer since then, don't know if there is any relationship with timing of the car.

2)fuel sensor replacement - Before the replacement the fuel gauze use to point at nadir though the tank was 1/4 full.*
Now it is working fine.
3) Rattling noise behind the DIS - It was a long standing problem it use to occur whenever car use to go on mild rough patches especially in morning hrs, I use to think that it is under the dash, none of the ASS (3 different TASS) was able to diagnose the exact site in the past. Also the TATA 's own subsidiary Concord people told me that they need to open whole dash & would take 2 days, better to neglect it.
Myself diagnosed the site few days back.
The SA said that he has placed some packing behind it. However it recurred on the way back to home.*

Particulars of the cost incurred, fully paid by me
Pad (code - 59089475) - Rs 419
Pad (code-59089471) Rs 630
Chain tensioner- Rs 760
Bush chain inavis - Rs 933
Anabond 666 T (25 gm)-Rs 88
50 ml Loctite sealant - Rs 654
Staplon tape - Rs 18
VAT - Rs 490.

Diagnosis charges of timing chain tensioner & timing - Rs 1250
Water pump renew labour charges - Rs1078.

Total for Timing chain replacement -Rs 6320

Petronas synthetic oil (previously same oil was called as semisynthetic by them) top up (1 lit) - Rs 460.*
If someone needs to replace the timing chain it is better to do it at the time of the routine servicing as oil is replaced by default at that time & you won't need a top up at the time of timing chain replacement. However timing chain replacement should not be postponed just to save few hundred Rs on top up.

fuel sensor - Rs280
Fuel tank remove & refit labour charges - Rs 154
VAT - 35
Total for fuel sensor replacement-Rs 470

Re: Tata Manza QJD 70,000 Kms Ownership Review (Tata Struggles To Solve Clutch Issue)

Lately, I was not very happy with the suspension of the car due to increased depth & number of the potholes on the roads. Also while crossing the unscientific sized speed breakers I had to slow down to snail's pace whenever the car was loaded.
Looking at the recent trend of mini SUV s with high GC, I wished I get some improvement in the GC of my car as most of my running is on the state highway and roads described above.

I installed 'Urathane cushions' on the springs of my Manza
Results :
1)GC improved by almost 25mm, effect is felt especially on the bumps, I need not slow down too much while crossing 'em.

2)Body roll nullified especially in Ghat sections at good speeds.

Cost :Rs 10, 000.
Time required for installation :1hr approx.

Re: Tata Manza QJD 70,000 Kms Ownership Review (Tata Struggles To Solve Clutch Issue)

@Shail1061, cost is the Rs10k total for all four springs.

Cheaper materials to improve GC are also available in the market, but its usefulness for reduction in body roll and improvement of suspension is unknown.
http://www.theautomotiveindia.com/forums/technical-zone/15195-coil-spring-adjuster-2.html#post403746

Seems to be an useful thing to add. What about longevity?
The installer told me that the material is utilized as a foundation for ship engines and lasts 50 odd years, he also asked me to remove them at the time of selling the car as they can be reinstalled on a new car if the new car springs are of compatible size.
------------------------------------------------------

Few days back,I was adjusting the direction of the spray of the windshield washer as one of the spray was getting outside the right border of the windshield .While testing the adjustment my son was pressing the sprayer stalk from inside the car ,the driver's door & window was open, hence the water got sprayed on the inside part of the door and the power window button cluster got wet ,and water must have got percolated inside as one of the button was already loose .
Later when I started the car the power window started operating on its own without operating the buttons .I immidietelty removed the cluster panel with the help of screw driver and disengaged the power window buttons from the wires (it is just a plug in connection ) . Subsequently ,I dried the cluster for a day, still it was of no use.

I enquired at 2 TASSs about availbility of the cluster ,one of them had it with the color & shape similar to my car. I decided to purchase and install it on my own .The fellow asked me to come before 5 pm.I wondered ,even government offices work till 6 pm, why these TASSs are closing theirshop at 5 pm !!!
Anyways,I purchased it @900 odd Rs and installed it on my own.

Also ,one of the rear door switch meant for switching on /off the cabin light had gone kaput leading to malfunctioning of the central lock alarm system also needed to be replaced ,Alarm use to switchon without any reason at any time. I purchased it in the TASS @50 Rs . and got it installed at
my accesory man . Now all is well.

Two days back ,the wind shield washer went kaput ,water started leaking from the water tank on the ground .Showed it to TASS , they replaced the water tank and its motor @Rs 900.Reason for leakage was told that some stone might t have got jumped and hit the tank and its motor .Though the SA had promised me delivery within half an hour it took 2and half hour.Meanwhile the SA and mechanic told me that on crankng the engine there is some noise which needs timing chain replacement[frustration] .I told him that timing chain was replaced last month. He said that parts related with timing chain [pretentioner ,oil pump etc ] needs to be checked on after other .I thoght it s better to ask and check at Phoenics TASS where the timing chain was replaced. Now I am really woried and confused [confused] as I have not noticed this noise before the chain replacement and even now.

Re: Tata Manza QJD 70,000 Kms Ownership Review (Tata Struggles To Solve Clutch Issue)

Dear All,
I am a proud owner of Manza Quadrajet and have done about 97000 KMs on the Odo, in 03 years. I have never come across any issue with this car except this peculiar problem of losing pick up at times. There is no set interval but this problem resurfaces after 5000 KMs at times or sometimes after 2000 KMs. I also got the clutch plate replaced at 95000 KMs. The problem is the RPM does not climb beyond 2000 when 1st or 2nd gear is engaged. The only solution is to put the car on neutral, rev the engine for about couple of minutes and then its ready. The TASS engineers are clueless on this.I would be extremely grateful for any help in this regard from the experienced and learned members in this forum.

Re: Tata Manza QJD 70,000 Kms Ownership Review (Tata Struggles To Solve Clutch Issue)

I had gone to phoenix TASS to enquire about the noise upon cranking the engine which was pointed out by other TASS, The phoenix fellow told me that it is due to play in the auto pretentioner. I got it replaced @2400 INR, a job of 1 hr.

Car is now 80000 km run.

RHS ORVM mirror glass broken due to one stupid Auto rickshaw. Luckily mirror case was intact except some scratch & functioning normally. Cost incurred for glass Rs 650. Mirror case along with glass was costing Rs 850, but needed to paint it with body color hence replaced only glass.

@anshuman, I couldn't post pics of DIY replacement of PW switch as it's not possible to post it from my mobile, will do whenever get an oopportunity to work with laptop. Now, LHS front PW switch has gone caput partially. I will replace it @next servicing.

Also, the aftermarket central locking alarm system is malfunctioning, alarm was buzzing irrespective of interference, accessory man told me that the one rear door open warning light switch has gone kaput. He was not possessing OE switch hence he tried to replace it with some local market switch which did not fitted there hence I bought one from TASS @50 RS.
Then, everything worked nicely for few days but the alarm has stared malfunctioning again now. I have removed it's fuse as shown by accessory man. Now I miss the alarm while reversing the car.
Also, the aftermarket Infinity speaker was malfunctioning on and off, wire had came off loose which was soldered back to place. After market AUX cable(belkin brand) was also not working properly on & off hence replaced under warranty. Now music system is doing well.

Recently, I noticed that the plastic string which is tied to fuel lid is broken and fuel bunk guys are taking the lid completely out . I think some stupid guy has pulled it forcefully inadvertently few days back.

My overall experience of the car as a owner since last 80000 km can be labelled as satisfactory though the clutch is on harder side if driven in b2b traffic for longer period.

Recently, car suspension was making GAD GAD noise while taking extreme left turn on bad roads. On tarmacs & routine turning there was no noise. I had to get some right front sided suspension work done. I will post the details in next post.

I would be extremely grateful for any help in this regard from the experienced and learned members in this forum.
