Re: Tata Manza QJD 70,000 Kms Ownership Review (Tata Struggles To Solve Clutch Issue)
Due to unavoidable circumstances, I had to delay the servicing till yesterday.
Yesterday also I had to get only 70000 km servicing done and keep the window lubrication, fuel gauze etc work pending as I had to rush back to the hospital where my mom was admitted unexpectedly.
They started the work immediately. Soon service people told me that there is some noise from the timing chain & needs replacement. I told them to get the 70000 km servicing done now & see if they can delay the chain replacement & hand over me the estimate for the same.
A senior person checked the car & said timing chain replacement can be replaced after 2kkm without any issues.
They gave me the estimate for timing chain replacement, it was as follows.
Timing chain - Rs 1050
Auto tensioner - Rs 660
Timing pad - Rs 1180
Sealent - Rs 600
Anabond tube - Rs 100
OIL pump - Rs 5990
water pump - Rs 3830.
Alternator belt - Rs1700
Adalor - Rs 1400
Auto tensioner - Rs 2400
Total Rs 18,910 taxes & labour extra
My immediate reaction was like doing this as done by fellow TIGER HR

I said, why so much? The SA said all the things mentioned are
mandatory to replace along with timing chain.
I approached the senior person who said things in bold need not be done and are to be done @100 kkm.
So finally, estimate came down to Rs 3590 (labour, taxes extra).
I paid total charges Rs 4912 for 70k km routine servicing. AC filter was cleaned and cooling was normal however a problem that when air flow was directed towards face simultaneously some air use to leak through foot vents still persists.
Also fuel gauze replacement (Rs 450), power window switch replacement are pending.
At the time of test drive, I told him that I use to get some wobble sensation during braking, he checked it while driving and said one of the rim must be having some 'out ' (change in dimension) and the problem would disappear if rim rotation is performed. And he will get it done at the time of timing chain replacement.
Also he said clutch is OK & not hard as complained by me.
I went through some other forums on the timing chain life & found following things.
MJD engine of Fiat Lineas from initial batches were needing replacement @60 kkm. However this replacement was not mentioned in servicing schedule in the owner's manual . Later on fiat included it as a routine replacement item in the schedule.
Same was true about Manza. Tatas issued a circular to include it from January 14,
To my surprise, I was not informed about it by the TASS @60 kkm servicing.
Vw vento, cruze, etc also needed timing chain replacement @60 to 70 kkm.
As per owner manual Verna CRDI timing chain replacement schedule is @60 kkm
In case of i 20 & xcent, it is 80 kkm.
For Logan it is 60 kkm.
However, for Suzuki swift, Chevy sail (runs on similar MJD/QJD type engine) &Toyota Etios timing chain(as per manual) is immortal. Also Etios comes with immortal fuel filter (doesn't require fuel filter replacement at all vis a vis Manza which requires fuel filter replacement every 20 kkm).
