Re: Is Maruti 1000 Good Car For Commercial Restoration Project?

The sad update:
Finished my regular office work & reached home at 4.15am & had a big glass of coffee & waited eagerly for the sun to rise. Sharp 7.10am I reached his home & greeted the owner with a big smile. My friends younger brother who currently uses the car got the car out of the narrow street & then I took the car for a 2Km spin & noticed the below things

Positives:
1. No rattling
2. No power steering issues
3. Car starts with a single crank
4. Tyres are ok for another few thousand kms (Michelin)
5. Clutch is normal
6. No vibrations, no belt noise etc
7. No major concerns about rusting
8. Drive shaft - no issues

-ves:
1. Engine oil is everywhere on the engine block
2. 5th gear is hard to engage
3. Although no rusting, there is lot of mud in the car
4. Interiors are in pathetic condition (seats are okay, its the floor)
5. The floor carpet is kind of torn in a few areas & mud has entered the gap between the carpet & the floor
6. All wipers in bad shape
7. Water leaking through rear door (right) rubber gasket
8. Front right HL & Rear Left tail lamp is colourless & needs replacement
9. Indicator stalk has some issues
10 Horn pad needs excessive force to honk
11 wires all over in engine bay
12. the steel mesh sort of thing on the exhaust pipe is hanging too low from car (rubs everywhere hump) & leaks exhaust gases from there
13. Sportier exhaust note thanks to rusted holes in the muffler

& the list goes on & on...

The shocking fact is that the car runs beautifully as if nothing is wrong with the car! The tappet cover gasket is leaking oil on all sides (including the area where spark plugs are there).

There are multiple sources of oil leak (on gear box side too). Timing belt cover (black plastic) is also very lose. I realised that this car needs restoration & not temporary repairs! I told the owner that the car badly needs the head cover gasket & tappet cover gasket replaced, apart from intensive interior cleaning & paint job. I cannot take up this task with the kind of setup I have at present, this car is not at all my cup of tea (for now). Moreover I cant replace the engine oil & send it back knowing that all of that oil will pour drop by drop to the road in the next few hundred kms.

I could not digest to see the car in such a state & shared a few thoughts about what a Fiat is all about & told him if he is interested to sell it (whenever) I should be informed first.

They hardly use the car my prediction was right (less than 200kms per month). His willingness to spend on the car is also low (lower than my guess). I told him not to do any minor/temp servicing, just get hold of the oil leak & the rest can follow. My advice lasted over an hour, key points I said to him were
1. 3M interior care - even they will sweat it like hell before completing this one. (2000/-)
2. Fiat Service centre - gasket replace + general service + wipers change + sorting & fixing wires in engine bay + Full AC service etc (8000/-)

Finally came back home at crawling speeds with the highest degree of disappointment in my face & heart.

Re: Is Maruti 1000 Good Car For Commercial Restoration Project?

I hope your advice was

1.Fiat Service centre - gasket replace + general service + wipers change + sorting & fixing wires in engine bay + Full AC service etc (8000/-)

and

2. 3M interior care - even they will sweat it like hell before completing this one. (2000/-)

Fiat spares can be expensive, maybe he didn't take this into account.Atleast you don't have the burden of telling him the truth on your chest any more.

Btw, how is the oil level in the car?If it keeps spewing oil like that it will lead to overheated engine and a bigger mess to fix.

The oil level was normal (neither low nor high on the dipstick) but was in black colour. As far as I know, they might use the car as it is (as long as it runs) & finally sell it off. I dont see the willingness in them to spend on even essential repairs. I did carry the camera when I went to see the car, but I was too disappointed to see it in that state.

Don't force them to do the repairs. Some people don't understand how seeing a car in that state would affect an auto enthusiast but they would think of you as being nosey. Are they the first owners?I don't think so.

If they keep the car that way it is going to blow its head and it will be a very expensive problem to fix.

Move on to other projects to get your mind off this Italian [;)]

100% agreed with Keith. Look for another car. No point in venting out emotions in front of someone who has no worth for them.

Anand, have you considered custom modification or just with the standard stuff? Modification has a huge potential right from small nip n tucks to major styling reworks. You can start with a small garage and FRP car model.

For time being I can do only basic mods & focus is on bringing back life to rusting unattended cars & not into deep mods (like addind koni shocks/ffe etc). I am still learning about all the after market options for custom mods & companies that expertise in such things - Automech, arrowhead, Koni, Sparco etc Once I have some basic level of knowledge about these, I will certainly venture into it.

Dear Anand, I am planning to restore my 800 later this year. Had I been at Bangalore, would have certainly opted for your services. Still, lets see what transpires, the world is round after all.....

2 crazy days of car hunt, still no good car

Dear Anand, I am planning to restore my 800 later this year. Had I been at Bangalore, would have certainly opted for your services. Still, lets see what transpires, the world is round after all.....
Thank you Sir, I will wait for that day for sure.

Hello Mr anand
.............will be in some village.
what about your location?
Hiring a space/shop is not feasible as of now. Hence trying every other possible route.

The 2 hectic days:
My weekly offs will not be on weekends anymore. As I am on job (finished on job training) & hence took it as a advantage. I tried to arrange some cash (approx. 30K) & started to look out for SS80 cars & I found one in pretty much ok condition (as in photo). Called up the advertiser & got an appointment for saturday morning. Could not sleep since I came from work yesterday morning till now! a full 36hrs non stop browsing, calling car offering ads, reading reviews etc.

Today when I landed at the car owner's doorstep, I was deeply disappointed by the way the car was kept. Everytime I visit any car for sale, I see the dikki area with trash (used coke bottles & what not), dirtiest carpets, broken windhsields, almost threadless tyres. The point is I ask every person I speak specifically if the Apron or running board or pillars were ever repaired for whatever reason & they happily say "NO" & to my horror I saw 2 cars one with welding near apron & today's car was a SS80 whose chassy was in very bad condition. Here is the link to the ad I saw & met today. Absolute crap on 4wheels sold as car on internet.

1985 old shap ss80(Maruthi 800) for urgent sale - Bangalore - Cars

Frustrated with false claims from the few I spoke to (Sealed engine, new battery, running condition blah blah blah...) I decided to stop hunt for cars. I royally treated the guy who bought my car & now when I see the way some of the people behave when I met them for the car TD, I just dont feel comfortable.

Dear Anand, I wouldn't pay more than Rs. 10000 for that red SS80.

Dont give up. Like you and I, there are several people who take care of their cars properly. Search for them and you will find them. Remember the golden Rule of Probability - the more you are failing, the closer you are getting to success. If there is one good person among 100 bad persons, you are getting closer to him with each of these 99 persons whom you are meeting and rejecting.

You have just started this thread. I am sure you must have given long thought to it before deciding to go ahead with your idea. Don't get disheartened so quickly. It may sound far fetched at this time but who knows, a few years down the line you may well be the hope for thousands of Indians who are looking to own a reliable second hand car.

Keep the hunt alive. You will get a good car at a good price. As Rocky Balboa said: " One more round."

WANTED: M800/ MATIZ - in Bangalore

Dear Anand, I wouldn't pay more than Rs. 10000 for that red SS80. .................ice. As Rocky Balboa said: " One more round."
I just kept reading your last line & contacted the few close people. Most of them had some family/financial commitments beyond which they cannot afford lending money. Finally my cousin arranged for a loan on card of 33K (despite over 2+lkhs he already has) & has already confirmed that by saturday/monday I will get it in hand! I got to pay it back in 6 EMIs.

The hunt finally begins with a (small) budget of 30 - 40K, not sure what's in store for me next week. Matiz/M800/SS80![:D]
