Man you really have a strong heart to be able to record a video right after such a scary incident. Hats off to your mental reinforcement and glad you were not hurt.
Glad you feel so. May be it was the adrenaline. For a few days, it was as if it wasn't me who was in the accident. Just couldn't believe it was happening to me.
+1 to that! I always have some comedy drama, speeches, movie clips (audio only) in my car's pen drive to keep me engaged in such situations. These will win any fast beat song hands down.
I must admit I had never tried this. Will definitely add this to the collection. I had a 1700+ songs collection.
Well, we need a separate thread to debate that
.
By making YOU state "someone prayed for me", HE is telling you that INTERNALLY you believe in HIM. HE works ONLY in THAT way.
Didn't want to spark a debate though! Just to put things in perspective on my thoughts. I was incredibly lucky on that day. I believe in causal effects. You are to blame, in some way, for most things happening in your life.
THAT is some solid escape, man. Nice to know that you are safe and well. From my experience, I would say, you were simply BORED. For me, steady (and SLEEPY) 70-80 kph speeds bring out yawns. "Taking a coffee break, modulating at 90-120 kph speeds, listening to some speeches (NOT typical music, but one that makes you feel that people are talking around you), or simply taking a 15-20 minutes nap" gets me out of this boredom.
Yes, Vijay. Seriously a solid escape. As bhvm pointed out, who knows what would have happened if I was driving a sedan/hatch. For me too, constant speeds worry me as boredom strikes. I will definitely try audio books / talks. I wasn't sure if I can concentrate on them.
My knowledge is below zero on Scorpio or any SUV repair. But, I feel, you should ensure that "ANY part that got dented or mildly damaged is REPLACED". On the main "Chassis part" see what Mahindra guys have to say on the "integrity of Chassis".
No worries, mate. A cousin helped me to talk to the service centre folks.
Sometimes, its better to have traffic to keep you alert. These lonely stretches can be a problem. This is one of the main causes of accidents in countries like the US, thats why they have fatigue detection and lane departure warnings etc. Another thing- its always important to have the AC in fresh air mode from time to time, instead of Recirculation mode continuously. Appreciate you bringing this up into the forum for inputs/analysis. It only makes driving habits better across the community.
Thanks for concerns. I do try to open the windows once every an hour or at the tolls (both front windows / all four windows), for fresh air. The surprising thing was that fatigue didn't exhibit its usual signs (drowsiness, sleepiness, yawning, etc). I must have been tired beyond all this. In fact, half-an-hour earlier to the incident, I had taken a break at Tindivanam for 5-10min, my usual stop. One thing is pretty clear, never get comfortable / usual routines when driving for longer distances. Always vary them is definitely a lesson.
For the benefit of all readers, here was the routine I used to follow on longer drives.
1. Sleep the previous night between 9-10pm.
2. Light supper between 8-9pm.
3. Alarm for 330am. Usually I wake up before the alarm. On that fateful day, I didn't wake up till alarm rang. First sign, and I ignored it.
4. Unusually yawny even after the bath (~4am). I started at 417am that day. Usual routine is to start between 4-430am.
5. Even though Friday, traffic / oncoming lights kept me very very alert till Krishnagiri. Post that the beautiful scenery / foggy conditions / sunrise kept me going. I was enjoying my song collection (1700+ songs).
6. Usual break at Arcot A2B for breakfast between 7-730am. That day too, reached Arcot @ 715am. I did feel my back was a bit more strained than usual. But nothing alarming.
7. Drive between Arcot - Tindivanam was uneventful. Since it is an undivided SH, my full concentration was there on the road.
8. I usually have a small coffee/bio break @ Vasantha Bhavan near Tindivanam. Pretty prominent place. That day, I thought their coffee is usually too sweet & hence avoided it. After the bio break of a few minutes carried on.
After 380+ kms of drive, just 4-5 kms shy of Pondicherry, the events unfolded. Thanks to my father, who never even asked anything about the incident. He came in his TVS Wego & picked me up! Even though I had a lot of friends, who were furious later on, I had decided to call my dad to pick me up.
Just after the incident, these things unfolded. Forgot to tell all that this was a solo trip.
1. Luckily the traffic was way too sparse. No oncoming vehicles at all. I had probably passed just 5-6 vehicles in that whole 30+ kms stretch on that Friday morning.
2. A few passers by (in 2-wheelers, including a drunk guy, pretending to help) stopped to check on things. The highway supervisor, who had just passed by (thought I was alone & didn't know what to do next) had called his toll emergency men to assist me.
3. Reversed the car a bit to make it to the side. Front wheel was too damaged to respond to steering control. The wheels were too broken to move, but they obliged & car was on the shoulder. Toll emergency guys came within a few minutes & hence didn't have the hazard lights on. They were there from 10am - 2pm, till the vehicle was placed on the flat-bed.
4. Took out the vehicles documents. Took out insurance & did the claim notification. Told them about RSA (ICICI Lombard). It took a few calls to get things done. RSA (from Chennai) guys called after 15-20min. In the meanwhile, toll emergency guys gave references of local flat-beds & I promptly called all of them. Understood the rates being asked.
5. Called my dad & told him about the incident. Asked him to pick me up. Home was just 6-7 kms from the place of the incident. Informed wife as well. She was probably crying the whole day & night. Her face was totally swollen up the next day.
6. RSA guys said they flat beds will arrive soon, after a few follow-ups. I didn't know if flat bed was enough. One of the flat bed guys (local) said since vehicle wheels were damaged, a Hydraulic crane was necessary. So I didn't have any references. Had to rely on the RSA guys.
7. In the meanwhile, a friend called. In fact, we had agreed to meet at our school (Govt school). We were conducting a series of career guidance sessions for them that day afternoon (10th Nov, 2pm). Had agreed to meet the school authorities for the arrangements for the afternoon session. Hence starting at 4-430am, otherwise I will usually leave after 530/6am. He (my friend) contacted local M&M centres & found the contacts. The help centre guys called after 5-10min & promised to help in whatever way they can.
8. I left the scene. Car could be locked. Toll emergency promised to be there till it got removed. I usually have plastic bags. So packed all items from the car (documents, change, water bottles, chargers, everything!). And off I went.
9. At around 1130am, the flat bed guy called (Auto Zoom). Said he had seen the car & that it needs a hydraulic crane to lift the car. Agreed for Rs 1000 for the crane. And told him to arrange the same. He did mention that crane will be required to lift it off at the service centre & can be locally arranged there.
10. Crane arrived at the scene around 1230-1245pm. In the meanwhile, I had met up the school authorities for the arrangements for the afternoon.
11. My friend drove me to the scene, we reached there around 115pm. Within 15-20 min, the car was on the flatbed. What I didn't realise was the damage to the either side where the ropes held the car. Paid the crane operator & signed the documents for carrying the car. Handed over the keys as well.
12. This is where I got cheated. Sathish, Auto Zoom (flat bed guy) told me that he has to arrange for the crane at the service centre too. And that their charges were Rs 2000/-. I couldn't be there & hence I settled with him for Rs 1800/- for the crane to lift the vehicle down from the flat bed. After checking with the service centre guys, they had simply used ropes / people to get the vehicle down. I had my suspicions, right from the start. My friend told me to let go (even during negotiation).
13. Flat bed called me at 3pm to confirm that the vehicle was indeed in the garage.
14. At 4pm, the service advisor called me to confirm as well. ICICI Lombard (chennai folks) also called to confirm the pressence of the vehicle at the garage.
15. I finished up my school programme & along with the same friends (now more of them), we went Schangalaya Motors @ 5pm-ish. It is about 14+ kms to the service centre.
16. Service advisor explained the basic issues that they had indeed found. Explained the incident. Claims forms were filled-up. Then I got to know that they will collect original documents. I wasn't prepared to let go of my originals for verification. The other thing to do was file the claim directly with ICICI's branch & they can verify the documents then. Once verification done, no need to submit originals. Back to the city then. I had skipped lunch, so we had coffee + snacks & went to ICICI's branch at around 730pm (14+ kms journey back).
17. The ICICI Lombard guy was waiting for us. Patiently he got all documents filled up / signatures, etc. Promised to expedite whenever/whatever he can. And assured no need to present during the workshop processes. I had an overseas trip on Monday (3 days after the incident).
18. All processes were settled by then. Got all the numbers needed for coordination. All formalities were settled. Off to take care of the personal side of things.
19. Book for the KSRTC Airavatha (to sleep like a baby) for next day morning. Couldn't leave in the night.
Lessons learnt:
1. Never follow too much routines. Routines make you feel compelled to do things, which may not be in the best interest of your bodies. I am 40+. I have to respect my body's age.
2. Avoid traveling alone, as much as possible. If unavoidable, respect early symptoms (like getting up after alarm, for me!) of tiredness.
3. Understand all can happen within a few minutes. I was taking a video of the road condition at 939am. I was taking the retracing-steps-video at 951am. Within 12 mins, I had dozed off, veered off & woke up again, etc.
4. Be cautious of empty long stretches. Not all of them are killers. But once you get used to it, body/brain is already tampered. Although I did cross a few in that 30-35kms stretch, my body started to think too mundane to pay attention. And dozed off. Try different routes probably. Follow different routines.
Hope I gain my confidence back soon. Sorry if the post was lengthy.
